INTRODUCTION
New theme for month of April “The Power of the Holy Spirit”
Let us not forget our annual theme of “Spiritually Mature in Truth”
The Comforter
“One who is called along side of with a view of helping”
Two simple objectives for today
Who is the Holy Spirit / Ghost / Comforter /Helper /Spirit of Truth
What does He Do

Thesis Statement: The Holy Spirit, part of the Holy Trinity, plays a crucial role in the life of believers by guiding, and comforting them in their faith journey.

Who is the Holy Spirit

Member of the God Head / Trinity
Had an important role in the creation of the world in the Old Testament

The Holy Spirit is not an unconscious, non-thinking, uncontrollable force of divine energy that possesses a Believer

Genesis 1:1–2 ESV
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Genesis 1:26–27 ESV
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
We see his presence in the New Testament
Matthew 3:16–17 ESV
And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Ephesians 4:30 ESV
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do?

Of equal importance we need to know what He does NOT do.

Does not Give us the ability TODAY to work miracles or speak in tongues.

In Bible Study we must have to STOP first
S.T.O.P.
S – What is the situation
T – Type of literature
O – Who is the Object of the passage
P – Is the passage Prescriptive, Descriptive
John 14:16–17 ESV
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Acts 8:18 ESV
Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money,
Hebrews 2:3–4 ESV
how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
It is absolutely imperative that one recognizes the purpose of the miraculous.
Miracles in the New Testament served the singular function of confirmation.
When an inspired speaker stepped forward to declare God’s Word, God validated or endorsed the speaker’s remarks by empowering the speaker to perform a miracle.
Our Bible came by the power of the Holy Spirit
2 Peter 1:21 ESV
For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

How Does the Holy Spirit Operate with Us today?

Acts 2:38 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:9 ESV
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Sanctifies us
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 ESV
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
2 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV
But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
It’s an indwelling - not a possession
We allow the Holy Ghost to work in our lives through:
Meaningful personal and family prayer.
Studying and applying the word of God.
Diligent and exacting obedience.
Cultivation of virtue, humility, and service.
Conclusion
How do you truly know the Spirit is at work in you? - by the fruit you bare - not the emotions you feel
