Colossians 1:15–18 NASB95
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.
Paul has a desire for the brethren to walk worthy of of their calling. That is to say, he wants them to have a kingdom culture.
He also understands that the only way for this to happen is to ensure Christ has His rightful place in His church.
Colossians 2:6 “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,”
Rudimentry principles
Exaltation of angels
False ideologies
False theology
None of the above will do it, it is only when Christ has His rightful place will God’s will be accomplished in His church
This is why the first thing Paul seeks to set straight is the preeminence of Jesus

Appl. If the church fails to recognize and submit to the leadership of Jesus, the church will not go forward.

The church is not your pet project
The church is not your baby
The church belongs to Christ, He has a plan for it, He’s leading the charge, and He wants me/you to submit to His lead

Jesus is the only one that has the right to headship/leadership in the church/kingdom

If He has the capacity to rule over the created order, then He can certainly do so in the Kingdom
Colossians 1:15 “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.”
Image means representation. Christ is visible representaion of the God you cannot see.
In a world that saw everything in nature as a representation of who is God, Paul declares that it is Jesus that is this image.
John 14:9 “Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”
They share the same nature/substance of God. Whatever makes God God, makes Jesus God, “the image”.
There are communicable attributes that are shared by the Father and the Son.
He was God and Man at the same time

“firstborn”

Paul is simply communicating that Jesus has preeminence and prominence.
Not first in time but first in priority Ex 4:22; Ps 89:27.
Jesus being the heir (Son) has the right to manage all things the Father has committed to Him
Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
Colossians 1:17 “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.
He UPHOLDS ALL THINGS
Colossians 1:18 “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, [the firstborn from the dead], so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.
There is an interdependence that takes place between the head and the body. WE NEED HIM!

Is He first in all things?

In the same way creation depends on Him, the redeemed need to depend on Him too.
