Romans 6:20-23
20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2:4, 8-10
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared, beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Romans 10:9-10
9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Memory Phrase
“BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED”
· So important to understand
Prayer
START WITH:
· A few reasons why a person chooses not to come to faith
· And reasons a person may not be saved at all
o Costs too high – Reading before sermon
o Pride - Self sufficiency – Self made – Don’t need God
o Hurt by church – Turned off by behavior of Christians
o Try to earn your salvation through good works
Memory Phrase
“BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED”
· Scariest - Think saved but not
o Cognitive vs Relationship (Saved vs Not Saved)
James 2:19
19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
Romans 10:9-10
9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
o Confess with mouth – Cognitive
o Believe with Heart – Relationship
o HEART:Greek: Center of one’s being and center of spiritual activity – whole body – person’s thoughts and feelings
SCARIEST VS of the Bible for those who think they are saved but aren’t
Matthew 7:21
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
“AM I REALLY SAVED?”
Self-examination as we go through these
Corinthians 13:5
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.
What is the Evidence and Characteristics of a saving faith
o Evidence of saving faith is all over New Testament
o Not an exhaustive list
o Can’t be legalistic here
o Speaking in terms of a general way of life and growing in them
1st – We bear fruit for God
Matthew 7:17-20
17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
You will know my disciples by their fruit
· Evidence of salvation:
o We exhibit good fruit in our thoughts, words, and actions
o We can say anything we want
James 1:22, 2:14-17
22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 17 Faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
· Evidence of salvation:
o Those who do God’s Word
o Those who do good works because of their faith
o Who study God’s Word on a regular basis
NEXT:
Evidence of salvation:
· Those who practice righteousness
· And no longer practice sin
· Also those who love other believers
1 John 3:7-10
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
3rd - found in Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
· Evidence of salvation:
o Display these qualities in their lives
4th - 1 John 1:5-10
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
· Evidence of salvation:
o We have fellowship with one another and with God
5th
Evidence of salvation:
· Those who keep and obey the commands of Jesus
· Those who know Jesus through a personal relationship with Him
· Those who walk as Jesus walked
1 John 2:2-6
2 Jesus is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
6th - 1 John 4:15
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
· Evidence of salvation:
o Those who confess Jesus is the Son of God and Lord
7th - 1 John 5:9-13
9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
· Evidence of salvation:
o We know Scripture – We know the Gospel message
o Those who believe in the name of Jesus know they have been saved
8th
Evidence of salvation:
· We remain steadfast under trials
· We rely and trust in God to get us through them
James 1:12
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
Above all else
Matthew 22:37-39
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
· Evidence of salvation:
o In our heart and in our words and actions, we show these 2 greatest commandments
o Everything we’ve just talked about
Let’s move on to “How can we be saved?”
1. Hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and believe
2. Acknowledge our need of a Savior
3. Believe that Jesus is Lord and Savior, the Son of the living God
4. Repent of our sins and ask God for forgiveness
5. We become a disciple of Jesus and live a life of faithfulness and obedience to Him
Memory Phrase
“BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED”
Back to Romans 10:9-10 on how we can be saved
9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Finish with John 14:1-7
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
We can’t look for any way to be saved accept through Jesus
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
