Gods ministry to David for Israel

Saul was given an evil spirit because of his unfaithfulness. He is angry, depressed 1 Samuel 16:23 , saucers violent mood swings, is jealous, paranoid, and a spiritual hot mess.
Calls for someone to help. Enter David
God uses this situation to train David to reign.
This story is not so much about Saul and his demons, but it is about David and his abilities that God is working on.
The focus here is not on the problem, but on the answer
The focus is not on negativity, it is not about trying to fix Saul
That was not David’s job - he was training to reign.
God is training us to reign is a similar manner. He uses many classrooms.

The Classroom of Solitude

As a shepherd in the field with his flock

A lonely field

Learned how to be alone with God and himself
Learned how to hear the voice of God
Learned how to commune with God - fellowship
Learned how to worship God - Psalms
Learned how to be at peace with himself

Alone with God

When are the noise in your head the loudest?
many are afraid of loosing sight of familiar U. Donald

Jesus spent time with the Father

Mark 1:35 “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.”
John 6:15 “Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.”

Moses, John the Baptist, Paul

all spent time alone in the classroom with God in the desert

The Classroom of Obscurity

v:19

Before David reigned he was alone and unappreciated

He learned to be faithful in responsibility when no one watched
He learned obedience
He learned humility
He learned to be watchful - pay attention to details
No thanks, no recognition, no applause. Just pleasing the Lord

God trains His students in the private before He uses them in public

Elijah, before prophets of Baal, served in small role
Elisha served Elijah before his great work
Moses was 40 years tending Jethro’s sheep
Jesus’s spent 30 years in obscurity before His great ministry began.

Don’t despise the day of small beginnings

v:18
Men may never see what you sacrifice in secret, but God will never forget.
The Widow Mark 12:41–44 “Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. And many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood.””
Hur Exodus 17:12 “But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”
Mary John 12:1–8 “Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him. Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it. But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.””
Mark 9:41 “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

The Classroom of Monotony

v: 11, 19;17:15
David didn’t have to learn to be faithful, he already knew how. He did’t have to learn responsibility, He had already had it, He didn’t learn discipline, enforced disciple lead to voluntary discipline.
Matthew 25:21 “His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’”
Our lessons in the classroom of repetition grow our level of spiritual life, being faithful over little things, gods gives us bigger responsibilities.

God blesses our routines

Prayer - even when we don’t think He is hearing
Attend church - even when I’m numb
Keep in the Word - even when it doesn’t seem relevant
Keep on sharing - even when rejected and no one seems interested
keep on giving - even when finances are tight
live for Jesus when everything is falling down around you - learn faithfulness by being faithful.
What would it take to make you quit?

We never really graduate from God’s Classroom

David wasn’t always bored. He dealt with many adversities
The lion and the bear 1 Sa 17:34-37.
The Giant 1 Sa 17:40-51.
He was hated and pursued by King Saul 1 Sa 18:8-12; 19:9-10.
god wants us to grow through adversities
2 Corinthians 4:15–17 “For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,”
Romans 8:28–29 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

Don’t give up in the fiery furnace

Joseph, 3 Hebrew boys, Daniel, Elijah, Widow of Zarephath, Noah, Mary Martha and Lazarus, …
God uses our struggles to bless others
2 Corinthians 1:4–6 “who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.”
“life is about 10% what happens to you and 90% about how you respond to it.”

Seven Characteristics of David God Liked

1 Samuel 16:18 “Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.””
