Call To Worship

Say: Let us now begin to worship the Father the Son, the Holy Spirit, Our Call to worship Comes to us from

Psalm 147:1 ESV
1 Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.

Text

Mark 10:35–45 ESV
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Recap of last Week:

The Fuel of being a servant is proper worship - Not as the disciples as one look for promotion of self, but worship of God (v37)
The beliefs of a servant are to be confident and zealous - The belief is like the disciples who knew they would be in heaven and wanted to do what ever it takes to achieve that. (v37)

What is called of you to be a servant

Use the words that Jesus uses and break them down and explain

A servant is someone who is employed by, or in some way bound to serve and perform duties for, another person. This term covers a wide range of social positions in the biblical world, from slaves to highly esteemed positions of civil service.

The Words in our text today are two greek words.
One that is servant in the NKJV and ESV (v44)
You have the word slave in the ESV and Servant in the NKJV
The words used in the greek for When jesus came to serve not to be served are the root word for deacon in the greek.
A biblical deacon is a servant of the church, this man runs the physical ministries, clean tables, organizing events, caring for the widows and orphans. This is what Jesus uses to discribe the action of a servant.
The word slave or servant comes from the idea of bondslave, that is a slave who wants to be the slave of a master as slave tottally owned and under authrotiy of his master. We are called to be that.

Actions of a Servant:

The Posture of a Servant : Least not Greatest

(42/43) The Lord it over is the idea of looming over someone, looking down, this is the tyrant that people grown under-

The Worlds understanding

When talking about being a servant like christ Jesus contrasts himself with the gentile rulers. You had Caesar Augustus who ruled at his birth and Tiberious who reigned while Jesus was in his ministry.
Today we have rulers like those in China, North Korea, California, New York, and so on. Those that loom over, but don’t serve. Gavin was caught eating inside a world famous restaurant in Napa Valley without a mask while fining everyone else who did otherwise. We had famously here in Florida hundreds of lock-down politicians come on vacation here to Florida during the pandemic, but acted another way and charged people back in their home states for attempting the same.
This looking over is what Jesus warns us not to be, and to be a servant of him we must act like a saviour.

Jesus the Model

When you want to know your posture look to Jesus. He could have reigned down from a throne, but instead he was born in a barn. He could have had every ounce of wealth and status that he truly deserved and instead he chose poverty.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
This doesn’t mean that he gave up his status as God, he didn’t account in his seeking to serve sinful and fallen man.

Application

Jmac Adds this is one: so many people turn to leftist politics because of Oppressive and cruel, vain and exploitative rulers and life styles. Theses draw people to the deceitful Marxist teachings that promise justice and really only deliver slavery.
- While reading this note and looking a the Greek I always run things through my 3 fold application system and my mind jumped to
Ephesians 6:4 (ESV) 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Do you Lord over your home or do you build it up? You can see the opposite here Lording over does as Paul warns “provokes a child to wrath - The English word ogre get’s it root from this, extreme anger.
Fatherhood is important, it reflects God to our children. We in America have a fatherhood problem.
There are 2 errors here.
1. The lack of father 2. The wicked father.
Lack of presence causes a child to wrath, because Satan will father in your place.
25% of our youth growing up without a father in the home.
This staggering statistic has not only destroyed the nuclear family but has devastated communities across the nation. For example, 85% of children and teens with behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes, and over 70% of all adolescent patients in drug and alcohol treatment centers originate from homes without fathers.
That is with the father not at home at all, but I know of many stories where the children just had a father functionally not present, not invested. It’s cat’s cradle all the way down. The wrath of these children will be in their own destruction.
2. The wicked father, we’ve heard this story. It is nightmarish
Apply the looming over further and John’s insight.
The 5th commandment considers many men fathers, Actual dad’s, bosses, political leaders, ministers. Our job is not to provoke but to nourish “Bring them up” Contains the idea of eating, educating, loving, and providing for your children, your employees, your countrymen.
Want loyal employees and co-workers? Take care of them, don’t Lord over them, serve them. Want a loving family serve them, build them up. Want to see our nation turn around do things that actually benefit families the goal of a nation should be to make ALL it’s people richer, better, healthier.

The Attitude of a servant Endurance

(39) Drink the cup was a metaphor for bringing something to completion, enduring to the end - JMac

ENDURANCE (Gk. hypomonḗ).†; One of the virtues of the Christian life cited in the New Testament, produced during suffering and which itself could produce character (Rom. 5:3–4). The

Romans 5:3–4 ESV
3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
When you look at this cup imagery it makes you think of Christ in the garden
Luke 22:41–42 ESV
41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
Being fully God and man he in his humanity felt the weight of the act he was about to do
Your Endurance will produce Character, not like the one your old coach used to say, or maybe it is. You become the shape of the man or woman of God who you are supposed to be. The hard things point shape you to the person you are, and the reliance on God gives you hope in the salvation you have and the salvation that is to come (the Return of Christ, you being brought to his side in natural death)

Application:

Here are 3 things about endurance that we Can learn from Jesus as we drink the cup all the way down in life. Coming out of that Luke text.
Luke 22:43–45 (ESV)
43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose from prayer,
You will hit moments in your life in which you will endure, like saying the sky is blue. Learn from Jesus what we must do and what God does.

Prayed

When you’re in it remember you are not alone. Maybe you’re praying real quick, maybe its a diagnosis that you’re just going to have to walk through you maybe walking through a Psalm 23:1-6 kind of moment.
Psalm 23:1–6 ESV
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
You need to be like the Psalmist moving confidently knowing that your God leads you through, prayer demonstrates your dependence on him, directs your mind and soul to call onto him. You’re like a child calling out to his father in the middle of the night.

He Rose From Prayer

We don’t want to be to long in delay from what we must do. I’m not telling you to not pray, I’m telling you to pray and put your work boots on.
You need to then obey God with your actions Jesus arose and got doing.
John Calvin says this:
Commentary on a Harmony of the Evangelists Matthew, Mark, and Luke (Matthew 20:20–23; Mark 10:35–40)
Our Lord enjoins his followers, indeed, to feel assured of victory, and to sing a triumphal song in the midst of death; for otherwise they would not have courage to fight valiantly. ... to advance manfully to the battle, in reliance on the reward which God has promised to them, and to labour with their whole might for this object;
So while you endure fight manfully, sing loudly, eat well, laugh loudly, because you are assured the victory. So rise from your prayers and walk in the assured victory of Christ. We will prevail, because our King has prevailed.
If you need to pray while you’re doing. Soldiers have radios in combat situations, we Christians have always had the back up we needed.

God Comforts

So this week we had to get our kids shots. Alaina held James and I held Sarah. I told her the truth, this will hurt, it will pinch and you will not like it. She understood, but not really who can understand pain explained? We know stuff hurts, but each hurt is different.
So I held her hand and with my other held her face to look at mine. Then the shots came, the nurse was fast and proficent and it hurt, a lot. I held Her had firm and kept her face looking at mine so she wouldn’t see the needles, she got a glimpse of them but I turned her back to me.
While you’re drinking the cup down, this hard act that you must bring to an end as all servants of Christ must do, our Lord acts in our behalf. You don’t do this alone.
Out Lord is holding you through the moment. Through every moment.
We see that in this context of the garden that God sends angels to comfort his son. Lk 22:43
Luke 22:43 ESV
43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
We see Jesus though while calling us to drink down the cup is also telling us else where that he will comfort us
see the end of Psalm 23:4-6
Psalm 23:4–6 ESV
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Jesus Comforts us (v4) this is echoed in Phil. 4:7
Philippians 4:7 ESV
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
He provides for us (v5, 6)
He anoints us, an act of blessing of those who attended feasts. (v5)
He gives beyond measure, overflow (5)
His acts are with you every day of your life (v6)
You will dwell with him one day forever, this hardship he will end, it has an end (v6)
In the Luke text with the cup you see that God sends his angels to minister to his son. God may be ministering to you with angels unaware to you. He uses all at his disposal for his children, which is everything. You are important to Christ and so He will deploy every measure for you in your endurance to comfort you.

Going back to Mark 10:39

Mark 10:39 ESV
39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized,
While you share in his hardships you, by sharing in this come share in his victory

Christ the ultimate Servant

(v45) (give the gospel)

Benediction

Say: As we close our service of worship dear brother and sister please stand and say with me the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from the evil one. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
