Intro
Colossians was written by Paul under house arrest in Rome to a congregation that was facing a heresy about who Jesus is and what God’s plan is for them.
Paul was like a spiritual “grandfather” to this congregation, as they were led to the Lord by Epaphras, and the church was founded in Philemon’s house.
Paul was writing to counter the growing heresy and ground them in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Know God’s Will

The Lord has not left us to wander aimlessly through life. He has made His will known.
Salvation
2 Peter 3:9 NKJV
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
1 Timothy 2:3–4 NKJV
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Spirit-Filled
Ephesians 5:17–18 NKJV
Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
Sanctification
1 Thessalonians 4:3–4 NKJV
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
Submission
1 Peter 2:13–17 ESV
Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
Satisfaction (Thanksgiving)
1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 HCSB
Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Walk Worthy of the Lord

Now that we are redeemed we pray to walk worthy of the Lord.
It is a fruitful walk and a growing walk.
God’s goal for you and me is to grow in Christ, not just reach some destination. The Lord led the people of Israel into the wilderness that they might learn Him. The journey would have been short had they followed His will. Instead it took years. The goal of the journey is to learn Christ! (Route 66 trip).

Be Strengthened with God’s Power

We need to be strengthened with God’s power, not by our own might.
As you and I walk in the will of God he gives us the grace and power to go through the trials of life with patience, endurance, and even joy!

Give Thanks for Christ’s Redemption

Give thanks for your inheritance (verse 5).
1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Give thanks for your deliverance (verses 13-14).
Knowing God’s will is about walking in relationship with Jesus - above all!
