Capernaum

Capernaum, on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, boasted of great fishing, excellent farming, a tax office (Matt 9:9), a centurion and his contingent (Matt 8:5–9; Luke 7:1), and a royal [unknown] official (John 4:46). Capernaum was no mean city! And—very importantly—Capernaum had excellent connections to surrounding districts from which visitors and transients came in contact with Jesus.
Capernaum was the key (humanly speaking) to the spreading fame of Jesus: comfortable living conditions, a friendly, diverse populous, a constant flow of foreigners, and exceptional connections. No wonder Jesus chose Capernaum as his headquarters! No wonder from there his fame spread and intensified like a tsunami!
Capernaum’s population, and archaeological estimates vary. Based on housing areas, Meyers and Strange estimate that there were approximately 12,000–15,000 people living in Capernaum during the time of Christ
Matthew writes the most about Jesus’ relationship to Capernaum, calling it “his own town” (Matt 9:1
Jesus went to the town of Capernaum after the initial threat on His life made by the people from his hometown of Nazareth threatened him (Matt 4:12–13; Luke 4:31). In Capernaum, Peter, Andrew, James, and John, who were fishermen, joined Jesus as his disciples; Matthew, who was a tax collector, also joined him.

Since large freshwater lakes with abundant fish resources are so rare in the middle-east, fishing on the Sea of Galilee seems to have been a heavily regulated, state controlled industry. A lease to fish in Galilee may have been prohibitively expensive for just one fisherman, thus the need for a cooperative involving many fishermen. They may have been allowed to pay their taxes “in kind” by means of their fishing catch. Historical evidence shows that some professional fishermen paid 25 to 40 percent of their catch in exchange for the right to fish.
1 John 3:7 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works.
