Introduction

MPS: The humble Jesus reveals our father, who desires for us to take on his yoke and learn to be like him.

Context

Matthew is writing to show that Jesus is the Messiah
Ch. 10 is call to Jesus disciples
In this call, Jesus makes it clear that they will be persecuted, and even executed for following him
Even still, he tells them to proclaim him boldly
Matthew 10:38–39 “38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”
In Ch. 11, John’s disciples arrive
They were sent by John
“Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Jesus answers John, “the proof is in the pudding.”
Jesus then starts preaching to the crowds
John is a prophet.
He is the new Elijah who prepares the way of the Lord
anyone who has ears let him listen

I. Jesus’ Declares His Generation Unwise. (vv. 16-19)

They Speak out of both sides of their mouth
Their deeds do not vindicate them.

II. Jesus warns of a coming judgment. (vv. 20-24)

They will be punished
Their punishment will be worse because they not only reject the shadow of what is to come, they reject the one who came

III. Jesus Calls the Unwise to Himself. (vv. 25-30)

Jesus begins his call with praise.
God has revealed the son to the generation
He did so because it pleased him
Jesus claims sonship with the Father
The Father has trusted the Son to reveal the father
It is through the Son that we know the Father
Jesus calls the weary and burdened to him
He will give rest
Take my yoke and LEARN
We find rest as we learn to be like him
he himself is lowly and humble
He leads us well
as we become like him
he steers us on good paths
The Father is likewise
