MEDITATION

- CALL TO WORSHIP -

Let us rise and worship the Triune God.

ADORATION

Minister: Bless the Lord who forgives our sins.
Congregation: His mercy endures forever.

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 115:3–8 “But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see; They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell; They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat. Those who make them are like them; So is everyone who trusts in them.”
Minister: Lift up your hearts!
Congregation: We lift them up to the Lord!

PRAYER

Our Father, You who are King of nations are also our God and King. To you alone we bow the knee, we declare your praise; we tell it to saints and sinners alike. This great, glorious, condescending King, has not only brought us out of darkness and the shadow of death, but has brought us into his courts. Courts of sweet communion and fellowship. Courts of grace, of love and mercy, of redemption, of ordinances, and of all your covenant blessings.
You have taught us of your love, and our privileges in you, and so assured us of our everlasting safety in you and your finished salvation. You have assured us that when you have accomplished all your blessed purposes concerning us, you will bring us home into your everlasting day.
Almighty God, we worship you now through Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with You, and the Holy Spirit, One God, world without end, and Amen.

EXHORTATION (Samuel Davidson)

“You, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death” (Colossians 1:21–22a).
By becoming one of us, by absorbing into himself the full extent of our sin, God destroys sin. God sets aside a whole world, the world we have made for ourselves, and God puts in its place a new world, the world of the new creation. In this new world, we are set free from sin, and set free to live in fellowship with God. It’s the point at which the world and all humankind are made new. We can’t do this; we can’t undo the knot we have tied. But God can: God has power and authority to make new, and in the passion of his Son performs this ultimate act of mercy, bearing our iniquities and so setting us free. And for us, this means that we become righteous. That is, we are put back in relation to God. Fellowship, friendship with God, is restored—not by us, but by God himself. We no longer turn to our own way; God himself turns us back to himself.
If it really is true that in the passion of Christ God has reconciled us to himself—then the most basic task of human life is simply to acknowledge that this is so. We are not at enmity with God; we are not trapped by wickedness; we are not under condemnation; we are reconciled to God. Part of us, of course, refuses to acknowledge that, because we don’t want to be reconciled to God. We prefer, still, to turn to our own ways. However absurd and lifeless and hurtful it may be for us, we prefer to pretend that we are not reconciled to God. Another part of us dare not acknowledge that we of all people are reconciled to God; we cannot conceive that the gospel can be so good that it will deal with our sins, too. But the unbelief or guilt or fear that holds us back counts for nothing. God has taken from us the power to live apart from him. We will not stop him from succeeding.
This reminds us of our need to confess our sins so let us prepare to do so as we sing,

PSALM

O God of Earth and Altar (364)

CONFESSION OF SIN

So, as you are able please kneel in confession before God
Romans 1:18–19 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them.” O Lord, despite our best efforts to resist you, you have established peace with us by the blood of the cross and reconciled us with your self though, we were your enemies, unwilling to acknowledge your existence and mindful of the wrath that you held towards us. Even so, you undragoned us, giving us the life we could never give ourselves. We confess that we have not felt the depths of this salvation and have been hardhearted. Fire up our hearts to worship you in all our works.
You have called Your church to truth in the inward parts, so we confess our individual sins to you now, Selah.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Please rise for the assurance of pardon!
Romans 2:21–24 “You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.”
Christian, Christ your Saviour has covered all your hypocrises and your false piety. Speak the truth in love and rejoice in your God for Minister: Your sins are forgiven through Christ.
Congregation: Thanks be to God!

CONFESSION OF FAITH

Minister: Christians, what do you believe?
Congregation: We believe in God the Father
Almighty; Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord. He was
conceived by the Holy Ghost, and born of the virgin,
Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into
Hades. On the third day He rose again, from the
dead, ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right
hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He
will come to judge the living and the dead. We
believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.
HEIDELBERG CATECHISM
Q65. Minister: Since, then, we are made partakers of
Christ and all his benefits by faith only, where does
this faith come from?
Congregation: The Holy Ghost works faith in our
hearts by the preaching of the Holy Gospel, and
confirms it by the use of the holy sacraments.
Q66. Minister: What are the
sacraments?Congregation: The sacraments are
visible, holy signs and seals appointed by God for this
end, that by their
use He may the more fully declare and seal to us the
promise of the Gospel, namely, that of free grace He
grants us the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life
for the sake of the one sacrifice of Christ
accomplished on the cross.
Q67. Minister: Are both the Word and the sacraments
designed to direct our faith to the sacrifice of Christ
on the cross as the only ground of our salvation?
Congregation: Yes, truly, for the Holy Ghost teaches
in the Gospel and assures us by the holy sacraments,
that our whole salvation stands in the one sacrifice
of Christ made for us on the cross.
Q68. Minister: How many sacraments has Christ
instituted in the New Testament?
Congregation: Two: Holy Baptism and the Holy
Supper.

MEDITATION
As we come to this table, we are called to come in faith. But this faith is not to be in this table but in Christ himself. Properly speaking, although belief on your part is necessary for salvation, it is not faith itself that saves you. Christ’s sacrifice alone, that he perform two thousand years ago, saves you. That is the all-sufficient sacrifice that God has set forth for the salvation of man. Similarly, this table set before does not save you. Christ saves you. But just like the message of the Gospel, this bread and this wine are God’s means of grace to you. Without Christ, this worship service has no meaning, your life, your family, your career has no meaning. You have no meaning. But with Christ you have all things. So, as you come to this table, look to Christ, receive Christ, believe on Christ, rejoice in Christ, share Christ, eat and drink Christ. It is all Christ or it is nothing. So come and welcome to Jesus Christ.
THE BREAD
For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he broke it: As we receive the eucharistic bread, let us sing the first two stanzas of
Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (484, vs. 1-2)
And when Jesus had given thanks, he broke it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Let us continue singing:
THE WINE
Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (484, vs. 3-5)
After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
