Deuteronomy 1:1–8 ESV
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab. It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them, after he had defeated Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth and in Edrei. Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying, “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill country of the Amorites and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negeb and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.’

Careful application
God has not changed
Christ Fulfilled the Old Testament & Law
Israel
38 years in the wilderness
Camped in the plains of Moab
Captured the region of Gilead (east side of the Northern Dead Sea & Jordon
Given to Reuben & Gad (Tribe of Manasseh)
The time had come to cross the Jordon and into Canaan and begin the conquest of the promised land
Deuteronomy consists of mainly two sermons given by Moses on the plains of Moab
The first: Chapters 1-4
The Second: Chapters 5-28
Chapters 29-33 are closely linked to the prior sermons
And chater 34 records the death of Moses
Unlike the previous occasion they stood on the edge of Canaan (Number 13-14)
he sets before them the law with instructions for living in the land
promising blessing for obedience but warning against disobedience
Deuteronomy means “Second Law”
Moses repeats the Ten Commandment to a new generation
It is the key book of the Old Testament
Sets out the covenant relationship between the Lord and Israel
This relationship is based on Love of the Lord who chose Israel to be his own tresured possession.
At the heart of the response that Israel is to be make, is love for the Lord
A love which is to express itself in keeping his commands and holding fast to Him
In doing to Israel will be a witness to the nations of greatness and goodnes of the Lord, showing his commands are wise and right
The rebukes of the Prophets and their calls to repentance were based on Israel’s depature from the ways of God as revealed in Deuteronomy
Moses
Had an amazing ministry yet because he acted without careful consideration he, like Israel, spent 40 years in the desert before he was called to lead the nation out of Egypt.
Then twowards the end he publically dishonoured the Lord before the people (Numbers 20:8–13) and so was not permitted to enter the Promised Land
“Waters of Meribah”
Israel had been moaning about water
God told moses to take the staff and tell the rock to yield its water
Moses struck the rock twice with his staff
His deep sorrow is the sub-plot of Deuteronomy
Leviticus primarily provides the regulations concerning priesthood and scrifices
Deuteronomy with the Ten Commandments at its heart set out the laws and instructions for Israel to live as God’s people

Merrill says, ‘There can be no doubt that the prophets, Jesus, and the apostles concurred with the witness of Deuteronomy about its authorship.’

Moses primarily wrote the book, but in a few places small additions have been made under the guidance of the Holy Spirit
Namely the account of Moses’ death in the last chapter
Deuteronomy:
Is part of God’s Word
Is written for all time and though addresses to Israel is for God’s People
Its emphasis is on:
The Grace of God
The Covenant Relationship between God and His People
Love for God as the true response to that Grace
.... it is always up to date and relevant
It speaks of the brotherhood of God’s People
The Laws that God has given
The Joy of Worship
… and It has timely truths for the church today
Location
Deuteronomy 1:1 ESV
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the Arabah opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
The verse carelly locates the people of Israel...
Numbers 36:13 ESV
These are the commandments and the rules that the Lord commanded through Moses to the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
This is the point that God has brought them back to the border of the Land of Canaan.
This was the place of opportunity, of promise and of decision.
There are occasions in life like that
Turning points that need to be faced with faith and wisdom
Every day we are faced with decisions that, though small in themselves, actually mould character and shape out lives
#1 Psyciatrist rule - write a list of what you want to be like how your want your life shaped and check every day whether your behaviour fulfils that objective
Deuteronomy 1:2 ESV
It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.
Israel remain here for many days before setting off on their long years of wandering
11 days turned into 28 years because of Israel’s disobedience
How much of life can be wasted when God is disobeyed!
Deuteronomy 1:5 ESV
Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to explain this law, saying,
The Children of Israel are located east of Jordon in the land of Moab
Moses brings his word, described as the Law (Torah)
Deuteronomy 1:6–8 ESV
“The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
Moses reflects back in time to what God had said to Israel at Horeb
God says “see I have a land for you”
God has kept the word he had given to Abraham
Even when the people refused to enter the land and were faithless towards God, He remains faithful.
2 Timothy 2:13 ESV
if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
The present generation of Israelites were witness to this
As children then had stood on the border of Canaan
now they were here again with the land of promise before them and a second opporttunity to enter
Inspite of the sins and failures of his people, God’s promises are sure
In his time everyone one of them will be fulfilled.
