The Righteousness of Faith

Notes
Transcript
Romans 10:1–9 NKJV
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 5 For Moses writes about the righteousness which is of the law, “The man who does those things shall live by them.” 6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Righteousness is revealed in two ways

A righteousness
++Of the law
++Of Faith

The Righteousness of the Law

Righteousness of the law as limiting & life giving

Psalm 19:7 NKJV
7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

Righteousness of the law brought insight & knowledge

Psalm 119:130 NKJV
130 The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

Righteousness of the law was the key to living for God

Exodus 15:25–26 NKJV
25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, 26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”

Righteousness of the law was limited

It was limited
++by its purpose
Romans 3:19 NKJV
19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
The purpose of the law was
++To exposed sin
++To reveal lawlessness
Romans 7:7 NKJV
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
It was limited
by its purpose
++by human weakness
Romans 8:3–4 NKJV
3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
It was limited
by its purpose
by human weakness
++by time
Romans 10:4 NKJV
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

The Righteousness of Faith

The Righteousness of Faith declares the proximity of God’s word.

Romans 10:6–7 NKJV
6 But the righteousness of faith speaks in this way, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ down from above) 7 or, “ ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
It doesn’t seek for someone
++To bring Christ up
++To bring Christ down
Romans 10:8 NKJV
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):

It declares that God is near

The Righteousness of Faith declares the placement of God’s word

It is
++In your Mouth

You have something to say

Psalm 91:1–2 NKJV
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Philippians 2:12–13 NKJV
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
2 Timothy 4:2 NKJV
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
1 Peter 3:15 NKJV
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;
It is
In your Mouth
++In your Heart

The Righteousness of Faith declares the Passion of God’s Word

Psalm 119:11 NKJV
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
Jeremiah 20:9 NKJV
9 Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.” But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not.
Romans 10:10 NKJV
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Luke 6:45 NKJV
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Paul’s Deepest Desire

Romans 10:1–3 NKJV
1 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. 2 For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.

Family Salvation

Israel had the law for God
++No knowledge of God
Isaiah 29:13 NKJV
13 Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
Israel had the law for God
No knowledge of God
++Were ignorant of relationship
Romans 10:4 NKJV
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
Israel had the law for God
No knowledge of God
Were ignorant of relationship
++No different than the Gentiles
Romans 10:9–12 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.

The Same God

The same God that chose Israel has called everyone to believe.

Galatians 3:28 NKJV
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Jesus Changed Everything

Eph 2:14–18 NKJV
14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. 17 And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. 18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.

Call to a Righteousness of Faith

What do all these people of faith have in common?
++Able Enoch
++Noah Abraham
++Sarah Issac
++Jacob Joseph
Romans 3:21–23 NKJV
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

There faith predates the law

Hebrews 11:13 NKJV
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Romans 10:8 NKJV
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach):
It is
In your Mouth
In your Heart
++The word of faith
++The word we proclaim
We proclaim
++Its proximity
++Its placement
++Its passion
