Introduction

Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations 3134 God Closed the Switch

A remarkable incident occurred some years ago when a Christian called upon God in a time of great danger. A 12-car passenger train was speeding along in eastern Missouri. On board were hundreds of happy children on their way to Sunday school picnic. The sky was cloudless when the excursion began, but it wasn’t long before they ran into a severe thunderstorm. The heavy downpour caused the concerned engineer to slow down to about 35 miles an hour. As the train rounded a curve, the man saw that the switch just ahead had been left wide open. He jammed on the brakes, but he was sure they faced certain disaster.

“Stick with it!” he shouted to the fireman. “Hundreds of children are on board.” “I intend to!” came the reply. Then the fireman, who was a Christian, cried, “O God, help us!” His words were drowned out by a thunderclap as a bolt of lightning struck right in front of the engine.

The next thing they knew, they were safely past the danger point. After stopping the train, the men hurried back to find out what had happened. To their amazement they discovered that the lightning had struck the rails and closed the switch. This in turn kept them from being shunted onto a spur which would have caused certain derailment.

Today’s Text shows us God who sticks with us and even at the price of his death was willing to do what it takes to save his children.
We are going to learn about what is called the Doctrines of Grace from this text this morning

Son of Man

The Lexham Bible Dictionary Jesus’ Use of “Son of Man”

Jesus’ Use of “Son of Man”

Jesus’ use of “Son of Man” language in the New Testament Gospels draw on Jewish traditions regarding the phrase found in both the Old Testament and apocalyptic literature. In particular, Jesus’ “Son of Man” sayings reflect the connection between the themes of suffering, enthronement, and authority that appear in the narrative of Daniel’s vision. There are four general ways in which Jesus uses “Son of Man” language in the New Testament Gospels: 1) to refer to Himself; 2) to describe His authority and earthly ministry; 3) to anticipate His suffering and death; and 4) to anticipate His future exaltation and glory.

This is the topic of the son of man. Jesus is claiming diety here, he is reflecting back onto the OT that this would have ben a reference to this.

Came

Matthew, Volumes 1 & 2 Jesus Our Ransom, Our Example

There are two aspects to Jesus’ declaration that he came to serve. The first declares his unique work. When Jesus says he “came to serve,” he hints at his preexistence and his divine mission. Before Jesus came to us, he was somewhere else. He came here to accomplish something, a God-given mission. He came “to call … sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32). He came “to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). He “did not come to judge the world, but to save it” (John 12:46–47). He “came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tim. 1:15).

Paul speaks of this in Ephesians 1:3–6 (ESV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
So the mission of God to bring a people to himself, this was the plan from the beginning for you and me. He came to “bring many son’s to glory” as the scripture says.
This word shows that God is not responding to the fall of man, but instead had a plan from the beginning. You’re salvation and adoption, your election was part of this. That is why he came.
It was based on his love and affection not on anything meritorious or good in us. This you can call unconditional election, God saves men not because of anything in them, bbut the goodness of God.

Application

God is in control and he is doing all things for our good and his glory. So you must enjoy what he has done. You should not take for granted the gerace given to you. Don’t be like the wicked servant who forgive his great debt does not forgive his friend who owed him.
Let your faith flow from your finger tips in your actions

Gave as a Ransom

This is the chief act of all history. Every moment up to the point of the crucifixion built up to this act, and every moment in light of that moment points back to it.
God was orchestrating the entirety of history around this event so that he could save men. Look at your story, maybe it is conventional, maybe it’s anything but. God worked to bring you here to know him. This ransom was the plan of God from the beginning.
Before time began God had planned to bring a people to himself. You can see how he would do it in the prediction in the garden and the actions God took. (Crushed, clothed)
The death of the animal showed the ransom paid, blood shed for sin, God provided clothing.
You see it in the life of Joseph, who his father thinking he was dead, when his son’s told him he was alive, and the chief ruler in Egypt came in his father's mind back to life, and not only back to life but provided salvation from death.
You see it when God has the Hebrew people shed the blood on the lambs to preserve life as the destroyer was for everyone in Egypt and then you see God provide for the people by letting them have the treasures Egypt as they leave. Providing life and for their needs as they left.
You see this when Elijah is restored by God when being hunted to be killed by Jezabel. God ransom’s him by preventing him from being killed he then brings him back to him by displaying his great power, reviving his hard and fearful; heart with miracles on nature. Then he provides for him, he also tells him that he will send to him a friend in Elisha and that 7000 men still believe.
You can see this in Daniel where the faithfulness of Daniel shuts the mouths of the lions. He stands in the place of death, and the beast don’t harm him, yet he provides him with life and restores him to his station, he even provides for the lions with the wicked servants being cast it.
This nature of Giving and Ransoming is all throughout the scripture, these pictures point to Christ, these shadows of the cross cover history, and it goes in both directions. I’d argue that the shadow of the second coming is also over us as we speak, we just don’t know that whole story yet.
God gave his Son as a ransom for us. He provided for us like he did for Noah out of the Flood of his wrath. The rightly earned destruction for sin.
Jesus paid the ultimate price for your sin.
It was his blood that was needed.
(shedding of blood)
God turns away his wrath, puts it on his son
He had to do this because Sin is completely wicked.
To acknowledge this is in no way to minimize sin. Sin is serious: it is destructive, it violates God’s holy law, it is contrary to the goal of our Saviour’s death and resurrection for us (Titus 2:14), it grieves the Spirit (Eph. 4:30). Indeed, a life that is ultimately characterized by sin cannot be a Christian life (Gal. 5:19-21; 1 John 3:9).
Thee state of man is totally depraved, this one of the many points of the doctrines of life. We love our sin, we defend our sin, we crave it. The wages of sin are death, but the free gift of God is eternally life.

For Many

This is the most controversial part of this text today. The impulse is that the truth that people don’t want to hear is many fold.
1) People are going to hell -
2) His death while able to save everyone is only applied to some. Jesus’ death only applies to the church, that is the men and women who believe. This is based off of no characteristic in you and I, but based on God’s good nature. This is called unconditional election, it is part of the doctrines of Grace or Calvinism.
That is because the condition for him to provide ransom for you is not found in you, but God. It is based on God’s sovereign decision.
The issue in my mind is why save anyone at all? You know that Sin is so wicked and evil, it is utterly monstrous. Men and women love their sin and love of sin makes you hate anything that holds you accountable. We see this in our lives all the time, people try to make excuses for the actions they take that are sin, try to hide it, try to cover it up.
The sinner knows in his heart says scripture what God says about sin, and so he hates God, he tries to deny him to speak into their lives, he knows God will hold him accountable for his actions.
And Yet this Ransom for the many actually accomplishes salvation. It’s not potential it’s actual, you don’t have to work for it to be maintained it has been done.

Application:

If you’re a Christian and you suffer with or deal with doubt of your value, you need to remember that your heavenly father values you enough to say “that one is mine” God himself said that about you, about me.
Their are people who, maybe in this room who have never felt loved the way they needed, maybe always felt like the kid picked last, who was passed over in their family, who feel like the black sheep, who maybe only in the quiet corners of your mind you feel like you don’t fit in. This is in your heart and you can’t shake it. LEt me give you relief from God today.
Our God says. “I chose you.” This is the doctrines of Grace applied. All of the triune God works for this btw.
The father chose you before your were born, The son accomplishes this election in his buying you out of the wrath by his blood, and the spirit secures you in this adoption as God’s child. It can never be undone, further the Spirit of God never abadons you, because this good work he began in making you his, he will bring to completion in the day of Christ Jesus.
The doctrines of Grace teach that you’re truly a Child of God, The God who will never give up on you.
(Give the gospel)
