OPENING ILLUSTRATION
Donna was the mother of 5 children… 3 girls, and 2 boys.
She wanted to teach her 5 children about gardening.
The girls were quite helpful,
but the boys seemed more interested in finding and playing with bugs.
One day, Donna wanted to teach her children a way to save money on fertilizer…
Burying fish in the garden!
Fish have many valuable nutrients that help plants grow.
After taking the kids to catch some fish,
they then buried them in the garden.
The girls were grossed out,
but the boys had a blast!
After they were done,
Donna headed inside to have a quick shower before making dinner.
As she was stepping out she heard…
“MOOOOMMMM!!!”
She ran to find out what was wrong.
The three girls were standing beside their aquarium…
“All our are gone!”
Donna looked everywhere and could not find any of their fish.
All the neons, guppies, zebras, and black and speckled mollies were gone!
“What happened to the fish?” Donna demanded.
Her 10 year old son, Christopher, said with pride,
“I took them outside.”
“Why would you do that? Where are they now?” Donna asked.
“In the garden” Christopher replied.
Transition
Christopher had taken his mother’s lesson to heart.
He wanted the garden to flourish,
so he took their fish and buried them in the garden
Getting to the Point
Plants do grow much better when you water and fertilize them.
You see, a plant grows by absorbing water and nutrients from the soil it is planted in.
You can see in a simple experiment using celery, and cups of water with food colouring.
How many of you have seen this experiment at school or at home?
If you take a piece of celery and put it in a cup with red food colouring,
after a day you can see the celery stick has begun to turn red.
This is because it is absorbing the water where it is rooted.
What’s the Point?
We are just like that!
We absorb whatever we root our mind and our lives in,
and we become like it.
If we fill our mind with social media, shows, or sports,
that will be what we think about,
and what will shape how we think…
If we spend our time with people who don’t follow God,
we will begin to model our lives after them…
If we can’t sit still and always have a need to work,
we will find our identity in what we do.
