Lev 2.

Anyone bake bread in here?
Discuss how good fresh bread smells
Maybe talk about the fresh tortilla’s as a kid
This evening we are covering Lev 2.
Now, before we dig into chapter 2
lets review last week in chapter 1
If we remember from last week we covered the Burnt Offering
which was a freewill offering to the Lord
meaning we or they gave it not because they had to
but because they were convicted
the atonement was literally written all over it
and in fact Jesus was written all over that
then the fact that it didn’t matter your who
you were
or how much money you made
there was an opportunity
to have your sins forgiven
through the blood of an unblemished male animal
The bull
the sheep or goat
or the birds
turtle dove or young pigeon
And they would wash the insides and the
feet to make it clean
just like Jesus makes us clean on the inside first
then the blood was splattered on the alter
sending steam from the fire to heaven
symbolizing Gods wrath was quenched
and He was satisfied
there was so much Jesus in that
it was amazing
we also discovered it was a bloody mess right
but it was that way because what?
sin always leads to death
and something must die
whether that is something in our place
or us (spiritually)
But, that about wraps us Lev 1 that we covered last week
This week is similar…. Kinda
This week we are looking at Lev 2 which is the grain offering
How cool is it that we are learning of the grain offering
the bread offering
the same weeks we are in chapter 6 of John
on Sunday mornings..
Im not that smart to plan these things
God is just that awesome
Just like we will see briefly a little about
Cain’s offering in this
and that is one of the things we talked about
Sunday evening
so, isn’t it amazing how intertwined the bible is
Let’s read it!
And while we are reading see if you can keep track of anything that repeats itself
much like we saw last week with the word atonement
Anyone catch anything that repeated?
memorial
frankincense
oil (was in there a lot)
it made a few references to unleavened or no yeast
Cool!
So, the grain offering
in comparison to the burnt offering of last week
we have some things similar
in both cases the best quality is to be offered
both were offered by fire
they both resulted in a pleasing aroma to hte Lord
meaning this offering accepted by the Lord and it pleased Him
But..
The burnt offering was an animal
the grain offering was well grain
the grain as we just read
could be cooked or uncooked
The burnt offering was bloody right
The grain offering was not
The burnt offering all of it was consumed on the fire
the grain offering only some was
and the rest was given to the priests
Within this offering there were a couple of different ways you could present it
either as just fine flour
or cooked flour
So, V 1-4 deal with the fine flour
5-10 deals with if you bring it cooked
either baked in the oven
baked on a griddle
or cooked in a pan
11-13 deal with the regulations associated with its presentation
14-16 if it is given during the first harvest
As for our words that are repeated we saw Memorial a couple of times right?
That is because this grain offering
this bread offering is an offering of thanksgiving
thanksgiving for what God has provided
For his provision
is that what we talked about this past Sunday
the power in Gods provision
how he fed the 20,000 with what again
bread…
and that bread sustained them
however as we get more into chapter 6
we will see that Jesus is the what..
the bread of life
now
a lot of times this is given with the first harvest and it is really special
then… remember how Cain didn’t offer his best during this time…
But really it is an offering or a gift thanking God for what he was provided
and God always wants the best from us
he want’s all of us
that is why it is a memorial offering
what do we do on memorial day?
and we are remembering what God has given to us
what he has provided for us!
and this is probably the easiest of all the offerings
so that we could really remember what God has done for us
we are to remember that
He sustains us
not only with the daily provisions
but with eternal provisions
we are satisfied with all that he provides for us
and when we feel hungry we are to go to him for substance
when they were hungry walking around in the desert
God provided manna
bread was a serious part of their diet
they ate it very day
it was practically what kept them alive
it was their source of life
and that is what this bread offering represented
we see in V1 that it is to be fine flower
this is like our burnt offering in that it is unblemished
the unblemished male
here is the fine flour
so only the best
unlike what Cain gave
Now, when this was offered to God
only a portion was burnt and the rest was kept for the Priests
again, in Gods way of providing for them as well
remember this was their job and this was how
they were provided for
The ingredients
So, lets talk ingredients
For one there was to be no yeast, no Levin
those were both acceptable foods to eat
but because they grow they ferment
they have historically been associated with sin
they have been associated with corruption
We see that in other places of scripture right..
Luke 12:1 “1 Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to his disciples first, “Be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”
corruption / false teaching
1 Corinthians 5:1–8 CSB
1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and the kind of sexual immorality that is not even tolerated among the Gentiles—a man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Shouldn’t you be filled with grief and remove from your congregation the one who did this? 3 Even though I am absent in the body, I am present in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who has been doing such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus, and I am with you in spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 hand that one over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. 6 Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new unleavened batch, as indeed you are. For Christ our Passover lamb has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore, let us observe the feast, not with old leaven or with the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
sin can grow, it can produce
and if we aren’t careful it will take over
and that is why it is not permitted in the sacrifice
it has no place at the alter of God
therefore they were never used in an offering to God
right because when we worship God
we are to come to him confessing our sin
we are to come to him know that he has taken it away
knowing that we ourselves our sinners
but, if we bring sin to our worship and don’t acknowledge that sin
then we aren’t worshiping God with our best
does that make sense?
he is a quote..
Exalting Jesus in Leviticus We Exclude Corruption from Our Lives

The difference between the people who offer right worship and those who don’t is not that right worshipers are not sinners. The difference is that right worshipers know they are sinners, they know they need God, and they know they need atonement and salvation that only come from God in Christ. That was the purpose of the sacrificial system. God knew His people would transgress His laws, and He was providing a way to atone for their sin so they could offer worthy worship to Him. Worthy worship excludes corruption

So, no levin or yeast
one thing there isn’t
there isn’t any blood
Now lets talk about whats in it..
Frankensense
anyone know where else that was offered?
when Jesus was born
it is widely valued
Oil was a major ingredient
we see it talk about oil all over this chapter
and what did oil represent?
anointing
and the Holy Spirit
oil is a symbol of holiness
the messiah means the anointed one
and kings in those days were anointed with oil
see where I am going with this…
The 3rd ingredient was Salt
what was salt used for back then?
preservatives and well taste (I really like salt)
but specifically
it says in V 13 they are to use the
salt of the covenant
a covenant is an agreement or a contract
See God will preserve his covenant with us
He will preserve his provision for us
He will preserve the bread of life
and who is the bread of life?
Jesus Christ our Lord
Before Jesus died he offered
bread as a remembrance of Him
as a memorial to Him
And we must remember!
That God provided the first fruits
His Son
Born in a manger
who was offered frankincense at his birth
who lived a sinless (no levin or yeast) life
who was anointed (oil) with the Holy Spirit
in order to provide (this is all about provision) salvation for us
and we know that that salvation is
preserved (like salt does) for those of us that are in Christ Jesus
AMEN!
