We plan, God laughs.
What sort of things do we make plans about?
Family, church, business, etc.
But we have a tendency to make plans without including lots of factors. The main idea in this passage is that we ought to plan according to God’s will. Why?

God’s will spans over eternity. (How we think about plans)

We have a tendency to forgot that God’s will is far greater than just what is going on in our lives. We have to keep in mind the past as a part of God’s will. We tend to be short sighted and remember that things have happened before us according to His will as well.

He is omniscient and sees the whole story. (how we think about plans)

Along the same lines of being short-sighted, we plan for just the span of our own lives. But if we plan in a kingdom minded way, the will of God will push its way to the front of our priorities.

Our lives are an important part of His plans but are not as significant as we would like to think. (How God thinks about plans)

It is built into our nature to consider implications for ourselves first. But we have to look at the entire picture and remember that on one hand, our role is insignificant. At the same time, the work we do toward the kingdom is important work!
There was once a preacher whose name was Nikolaus von Zinzendorf. He once said, “Preach the gospel, die, be forgotten.” I think this perfectly describes how we should look at our plans. We live this life as a mist, remain faithful, and then fade away. Sure, we’ll be remembered as we leave a legacy, but may the things that we did reflect Jesus rather than ourselves.

Plan according to His will and pivot when it doesn’t seem to be in His will.

The phrase that comes to mind here is “Lord willing and… the Creek don’t rise.” I believe it was Brother Ronnie that first informed me that this is not a body of water that is being referred to but actually the Creek Indians.
This saying is how we ought to plan. I am going to do this or that as long as God wills it.

Never boast in your own doing.

If we plan according to God’s will, we will not have anything to boast of ourselves.

The right thing to do is God will. Do that.

So, plan to do God’s will and do it! This is important. You can never go wrong if you keep the will of the Lord at the forefront of what you do!
