I was about 26 years old when I graduated college. And I was taking on my first Ministry assignment in. Camdenton, Missouri, right on the Lake of the Ozarks

and it was there that I got a magazine and on the on the cover of that magazine was a reference to a scripture verse that would become.

my

my purpose statement in life

the Apostle Paul pin the words under the inspiration of the holy spirit in Philippians chapter 3 verse 10 and 11. I want to know Christ. And the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of suck of his sufferings becoming like him in his death and so somehow to attain unto the resurrection from the dead.

I want to know Christ. In everything that I do everything that I say. I want to know Christ not just facts and figures not just historical historical information. I want to know him and be known by him.

And everyday I'm reminded how important that is this morning. I got a phone call at maybe it was a quarter till 8. Pastor would you come to the hospital? So I went over to the hospital a person who does not attend our church and passed away. And so I went into that tiny hospital room just down the road. And I've looked at a lifeless body.

And I reminded of myself another thought that I often think and that is I do not like deaf. I don't I see The Grieving family huddled around the bed staring at their loved one. The first one of the first thoughts that come to my mind Beyond just the fact that I do not like death is what do I say in moments like this?

So easy to hold on to the crochets. The quote something that sounds wise.

The first thing out of my mouth I said. I don't like that.

But I know the one who defeated death.

And so I prayed with the family and then went back to the house to get my wife and my children to come to church this morning. But again, you've been this morning and me something that's unplanned. It reminds me of how much I need Jesus Christ. How much I need to know Kim? In fact, it is the most important subject that a preacher can ever preach a we preach a lot of messages. Don't we some really good some that seems really wonderful to listen to others can be similar to Tylenol PM

And this morning I was really nervous losing an hour of sleep. I was wondering how was I going to keep you up at energized and focus?

Jesus if I was not allowed to preach any other message, but just Jesus.

That be okay with me. And in fact, it is the message that we not only need to hear but we need to receive and we need to live by. Because see see it's not about giving you an inspirational speech. Not motivating you somehow and in some kind of Ted Talk they call them. but what I need to be called to do and what we need to be called to do is we want to know just like the Apostle Paul did just like the other Apostle just like all the Christians before us I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection in The Fellowship of sharing in his suffering becoming like him in his death and so somehow to attain unto the resurrection from the dead that's what we need to do and when we do, Two things begin to happen and also a peace that surpasses all understanding begins to well up within us. And the joy that is unspeakable and full of his glory begins to bathe us like a fountain.

filled with blot drawn from Emmanuel's veins the God wants to do a work in our life where we're not here just to observe. We're not just here to to see things. What we are here is tonight is to absorb and to allow God to work in our like the spiritual truth that we desperately need a Saviour. Can we need to pattern our life after him? what I said

Jesus was was in his final Daddy before the cross That final moment. Sometimes I wonder what was going through everybody's mind. Jesus Did what he always does depraved? You took some of his disciples Peter James and John and he brought them to a very familiar place to place was called Gethsemane.

It was a place they were very familiar with because see Jesus. What's a person of Prayer? I find that a little bit odd the infant Son of God.

praise

And I'll tell you if he needed the prey. How much more do we need to pray? Jesus brought his disciples his his three closest companions. He said wait. I want you to pray. I want you to pray intercede for me, and then he went a little farther into this Garden called Gethsemane. It means it means Olive press. Play suppressing.

It was there that Jesus. began to pray a prayer

a prayer of

weird that centered on a battle that was rage.

Because see Jesus. Jesus know that

and just hours The Sims of the world would be placed upon him As a sacrifice. before God

the one who knew no sin. The one who was perfect and Holiness perfect in Union with the father and the spirits.

The one who never never transgressed the law of God.

Would become sin. Your sin would be placed upon you. Rick Morrison would be placed upon him.

All those that have perpetrated genocide Through the Ages that's in would be placed upon him like as if he did it.

The one who knew no sin the one who was at perfect. Peace with God that peace would be broken.

Have you looked up to the father?

And he said something that battles with us today at we wrestle with it. He he under these words made this cup pass me by this cup of rap. They what is going to happen Kenneth Tim. It pass me by because Jesus was not only 100%. He was 100% man.

and he would feel if repainting every humiliation every heart every betrayal Would be placed upon the weight of every cent pushing on him pressing him like the all of us would be pressed. That does suck. How's the boss? See that's important for us to understand because sometimes when we when we read about Jesus when we see him when we see pictures of Jesus, we don't understand that what he went through was because of us.

If we need to put our self in that proper place is there because I put them there. Because I transgressed against the lord and there was no other way in which God can bring back unity and bring back relationship between us and him and so he sent his son to take the penalty of our sins so somehow someway we would trust him. but after after that battle is not prayer room.

He said these words. not my will but your will be done.

Friends, let me tell you something. That's when the battle was won. That's the moment of Victory right there. It may not seem so but that's the point. so Jesus Jesus descended that Garden looked at his disciples. His disciples were asleep.

see for him to to watch and pray to to be strong in this very dark hour and he fell asleep.

But the moment was a hat. Everything changed now. Judas the betrayer was coming

Judas and the mob from the Pharisees and the religious leaders they were coming now.

And Judas was close friend of Jesus went up to Jesus.

And he betrayed him.

and the mob took him

they bound them. They treated him like a common criminal his disciples didn't know what to do. They were afraid they were terrified all at first they wanted to fight but they crossed heart very quickly. and then they dragged Jesus away.

So easy for us to say all if I was there. I would have stood up. If I was there I would have thought.

But I want you to understand something. Please understand something very important.

Jesus told his disciples. He said Watch and Pray.

Be alert. And always be an intersection before God. It's the only way that you can overcome temptation.

cheap temptation of Bounce Temptation overwhelms Us in if we are not alert if we are not watching if we are not praying. then then we are very susceptible. to being led astray Jesus told his disciples, you know, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

And I think sometimes we have allowed our arrogance and pride to conceal the truth that we are very weak people.

We are very susceptible to the enticements of sin. We are very very willing. It seems without much of a fight without much of a battle to circum. Friends, let me tell you something what Jesus showed us what He revealed that that day at Gethsemane was how much we need to be people of Prayer. We cannot do life without earnestly seeking God and praying before him. Too often we try to do life our own way. And when we do life our own way, we will get scared and we will run away. God wants us to seek Him continually to earnestly seek Him and pursue him and to be in his presence to earn asleep intercede for others around us our family our friends. So that when Temptation comes we will not fall into it. Our friends will not fall into it are our family will not fall into it, but we will be earnestly seeking. That's where the battle is. That's where that's where the fight is friends for Jesus in for us.

the mob took Jesus to

To see the preseason and there was the high priest Caiaphas and the elders. In the courtroom. It was a trial. Are there was something wrong with this trial and me tell you there was something wrong with this trial trials were not allowed to be at night. They were not allowed to be in secret. But it's very easy for us to Cloud our judgement. When we have an end desire to happen. so the mob brought Jesus before the religious leaders the elders.

I want you to understand these religious leaders these Elders were so angry with Jesus. These Elders abeloth. He's the students of the law.

Dean's Proclaimers of the law what they did was they they rewrote the law. They they decided the law needed help it needed interpretation. And what they did was they they they they put the burden on the people that they could not carry. In fact that the elders couldn't carry it themselves. They were Hypocrites. They would say something but they wouldn't live it and Jesus called them on it. And they were angry. Caiaphas was so enraged at Jesus. He he he saw something in Jesus that that just infuriated him. And so Caiaphas finally said something he finally asked the question Jesus. Are you the Christ the son of God?

I want to tell you I find that really interesting.

I'm on ice and I could have possibly understood if Caiaphas just said are you the Christ? Are you the Messiah? Are you the second one? Are you the promised one? But he added something to it. Are you the Son of God tells me that Caiaphas new and it's hard. Who Jesus really was? And he made a deliberate decision. against God's Authority

Now before you look at Caiaphas, and you say all Caiaphas, you're so evil. Caiaphas You need to be done away with.

Can I tell you something? I think we're much more like Kaya Fist and we would want to admit.

because maybe we look Upon Jesus.

and we we see Jesus as one who will give us what we want. And if he doesn't give us what we want and we're not going to serve him. He's not going to be our Lord.

Maybe we look at Jesus.

And we want him to make us something that we want to be. We want to be famous. We want to have all the stuff and if he doesn't give us what we want, then we're not going to serve Jesus. We're not going to honor Jesus.

Maybe we look at Jesus.

And we want him to be something that we want him to be. We want him to be the political Jesus.

We want him to to to to be the one that will that will help us have what we want in our country and in our community and and we do Jesus as the Revolutionary cat will start things up.

I'm going to call you. We are a lot like Caiaphas. Then we want to admit. because friends what Caiaphas was doing was he was rejecting Jesus is Lord. And how often do we do that? When we get hurt, we refuse to forgive I'm not forgiving that person. You don't know what he did to me. Jesus says I want you to forgive. I'm not going to forgive that doesn't apply to me.

We want to break our marriage vows. Because it's no longer fun to be married anymore, Jason says that we are to honor our spouse and we are the owner our vows before our spouse and because it doesn't feel right and it doesn't still bring us bring us what we want. We can we say what were we don't we don't we're not going to live that way anymore. And when we reject the Lord's Authority in our life

Where or what like Caiaphas? Then what we would at not to.

big brutalize Jesus that day they would hit him. I would say that son of God. They ridiculed him. They humiliated him.

They rejected him. so So Jesus was sent away.

They dragged him out.

The time was drawing to a close.

crossword clue me

somebody's follow the crowd to caiaphas's house that day. Who was Peter?

Always stayed his distance distance. He didn't want to be recognized. He wasn't sure what to do and the end probably what Jesus foretold about him that he would deny Christ e he wanted to make you wanted to prove Jesus wrong.

Maybe you was trying to find a way that he is trying to find his courage. There he he looked on stay brutalized and humiliated and tortured Jesus.

They're not. as he was Has he was looking on? Servant girl went up to him. Are you are you with Jesus? You know what? He said. I don't know. No, I'm not with them.

This Man Called Jesus Still the waters. saw Jesus bring a little girl back to life who saw Jesus healed the lepers who saw Jesus bring sight to the blind and deaf. to the to the hearing to the deaf

He saw it all and yet the coward to a little schoolgirl. somebody else wanted Cheese's Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I seen you with him before. I don't know the man.

It says that he made a vow. He made a Divine before God promise. I don't know him.

then Another person came up to him sick. You're from your you're with Jesus. I don't know him. I don't know what you're talking about began to swear.

And then the rooster crowd. And when the rooster crowed he remembered Jesus said you will deny me. 3 * before the rooster crows

Peter was broken.

This incredible man this incredible. strong man

became a man of straw.

The Bible says he wept bitterly.

Swept Away

friends Let me ask you.

Have you ever denied Jesus?

You say when somebody ask me if I'm one of his eye I tell him I'm one of his I'm not talking just about that kind of denial.

talking about

have you ever

have you ever had this thought Jesus?

I I don't think that you even exist.

I was watching Nancy Reagan's funeral. on Friday

and her son Ron Reagan gave the final eulogy

I'm up all the things that were said that day what he said stuck with me.

tomato confession He said I don't believe in the Supernatural.

broke my heart it always breaks my heart when anybody says when anybody denies that Jesus is Lord, it breaks my heart. I don't get angry. I don't get infuriated. I don't it's not anything like that because see I've come to the place in my spiritual life where I embrace the words of Christ. You know what Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me.

Fact that scripture was one of the scriptures at Nancy Reagan's funeral that was quoted. They even had the audacity to read that last part. No one comes to the father except through me.

too often what we've done is we've tried to make Christianity into religion about us rather than a relationship about him. And as a result, we have become not just like Caiaphas, but we become like Peter.

Where we have grown accustomed to deny. Not only his existence, but we have come become comfortable denying his authority in our life.

And friends, there is no peace and there is no joy. Until you have a relationship with Jesus Christ. There is no hope that you can ever muster up. There is nothing you can do unless you have come to that place in your spiritual life where you have said Lord I Surrender off.

I confess. that you died for me

not just for the world and not just for everyone else. But Lord Jesus you died for Ed Walker. on that cross does your blood pour down on Mount Calvary? That was spilt for me. See I have to take ownership of it. I have to embrace it for all it's worth that I would try.

To think that somehow I can be good enough for God. You can never be good enough for God. If I could somehow try to say the right words and go to the right church and give the right kind of money and all of those I will tell you that is nothing that will not bring you anywhere near salvation Salvation only comes. By saying large you died for me.

And you Rose again for me?

That you're coming back for me. I am yours.

and you are my

and that's what it means to be a Christian.

I know there's a lot. People talking about what it means to be a Christian. It has become a campaign issue in the presidential campaign, but I will tell you The issue is this have you surrendered your life to the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no whole thing. We do not know how long we are on planet Earth.

This morning when I stood in that hospital room. Only God knew what the appointed time was. We don't know when the appointed time is but friends we can know this we can put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ Alone, we can stop being like Caiaphas we can stop being like Peter and we can we can be more like Christ where we live that surrendered life and we say Lord not my will but your will be done.

With every head bowed every eye closed no one looking around.

Right Where You Are

I don't want you to worry about the person to your right to your left behind you or in front of you. I don't want you to worry about anything. I want you to be focused on.
