What do you get when you add love and service (verses 8, 11)? Hospitality! As the apostle Peter anticipates the end of the age (verse 7), he is caused to think about what is most important for the church to be devoting themselves to. And he calls the church to practice hospitality. Much of the strife we observe in our society is but the echo of the hollowness of our souls. We are lonely, shallow, disconnected, and broken. Practicing hospitality is to be God’s agents of bringing each other in from the fringe to the center. “Hospitality is not a gift we give we have, but a gift we give” (Chuck Crismier). Really, it is about giving each other the gift of God with skin on.
