The Lesedi la Rona diamond is the size of a tennis ball and is the largest discovered in more than one hundred years. When the diamond goes to auction, experts expect it could sell for more than $70 million. The gem measures over 1,000 carats. It’s name comes from the Tswana language and means “our light.” The auctioneer said the rough gemstone could produce the largest top quality diamond in history. David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby’s jewelry division said the discovery is the find of a lifetime. He added, “Not only is the rough superlative in size and quality, but no rough even remotely of this scale has ever been offered before at public auction.” —Jim L. Wilson and Jim Sandell
