Well as we continue in our service I want to highlight something from home and ago when we were singing Holy Holy Holy. Let the spirit of the room changed there was kind of some chatting and movement still going on. But when that song began folks kind of focused at a different level. And I think we have a lot of things that we don't have in common. Sometimes I suspect that not all of us have the same list of favorite politicians. I can probably get an amen on that if we started listing politicians we can start of the bay there. I can throw out some names here and we can start argue with each other about who you're going to vote for this politician or the other we could discuss worship style in favorite decades or centuries for for Christian worship music and we have different opinions on that. We could discuss decorations or even Foods at a potluck. We could have different opinions on that. We don't have everything in common, but we do have the most important thing in comments and that is reverence for Christ. When we began to sing Holy Holy Holy we were unified as a congregation in our devotion and our admiration of Christ. And that's the most important thing. If you are a Christian what you have in common with every other Christian is that you call Jesus Christ Lord. And therefore everyone that he calls a child of his is your brother or sister in Christ and we are a family because we have that same heavenly father and that same Divine Lord and Christ. We have this reverence for him this Devotion to him and the sermon I want to share this morning has has really been something that that's been in my mind a long time coming not in the sense of something you guys need to hear but I hope it is something you need to hear but something I need to preach something that's been brewing in my life may be a better analogy would be it's a seed that was planted many many years ago that I'm striving to live out in my life and I hope by the end of our sermon this morning that you will want to join me in striving to kind of see this seed in your life and it has to do with the lordship of Christ that very thing that we have in common. The Original Seed of the sermon this morning really came from an older Minister that I worked under he is still in the ministry. He may be retiring. I think this year or next he began full-time Ministry in 1961 and he is still going strong. I think he's in his 52nd. Maybe fifty third year at the church that he's at his name is Bob Robinson. I was his associate for a few years. He was very much or is very much like Wayne Smith and he's not that much younger than Wayne Smith's I don't think he was mimicking Wayne Smith. I just think he he was like Wayne Smith in his natural mannerisms and his great sense of humor. I say was I shouldn't keep using the word. Why is he still active in Ministry and doing a fantastic job. But whenever he would free, she had lots of humor and he reminds me of Wayne Smith because he would come down from the pulpit at the end of a sermon you can always count if he'd be up here for the sermon but at the end he'd always come down a little bursitis in one shoulder. So we are still a little bit like this he put his fingers together and he closed out the sermon for the invitation time and sometimes he tell He's got to be good you be looking forward to it? Cuz that's how you do it every time and we love Bob very much. He's a great friend of our families and a great Minister for me to work on it for many years and I still remember me this sermon and one sermon that I remember to this day that is that seed that planted in my heart was one time that I went with him to Milligan College and he was speaking at Chapel to the students back in the 90s. And when we got there just about everything that could go wrong went wrong during Milligan's Chapel until the time it came for him to preach instead of having a normal 20 or 25 minutes to preach to the students. He had about seven minutes to preach because everything is going wrong and they just kind of said you had good luck with all that. So on his feet, he's thinking what do I do when he was a seasoned preacher and a good and godly man song. Shut up. He preached the 7 Minute sermon that I have not forgotten to this day. And so I want to preach that sermon to you here maybe in a two or three minute version. Okay, when he got up, he said that the students he said look what I'm going to tell you this morning is perhaps the most important things that you will ever hear in your life. And he was right. It was true. I've heard the whole sermon. So trust me what I'm going to tell you via Bob is potentially one of the most important things you will ever hear in your life. And if you take this one truth that I'm going to share with you in just a couple of moments. If you take this one truth and you apply it to your life, it will completely transform your life every day from this moment on for the rest of your life. It will be completely transformed. If you take this one simple truth that we can find a scripture and you apply it to life. Are you interested in hearing that truth? The Bob did that for about 6 minutes. He did it for about 6 minutes and he's really good at that kind of thing. I was saying yes. Amen Bridget Bob all of us were on the edge of our seats saying what is it that you're going to share with us any turn to John Chapter 2 and it read the story of Jesus first miracle of turning the water into wine, but he stopped any focused on one particular he verse

John 2:5 when Mary sister the servants whatever speaking of Jesus whatever he says to you do it.

That was Bob's point. Mary model for us this little truth because they ran out of wine and she came to Jesus and said they're out of line. This is going to embarrass the host and Jesus said look, it's not my time. Why are you asking me to do this sort of thing? And she just didn't even kind of acknowledged that she just grabbed the servants and pointed the Jesus and said whatever he says to do do it. And Bob appropriately said that is the secret to a successful life. That is a secret to a life. That is transformed. Whatever. Jesus says to do do it a man. Should we just closing prayer? I mean that's gold in my mind that is gold the Simplicity and the power of that. I think this is our rule of life as those who have in common reference for Christ as Lord and Savior as the holy Son of God in human flesh on the earth. We Revere him we praise him. We worship him we bow to him. He is our Lord and savior. We've been baptized in his name. We makes a good confession. I believe that Jesus is the Christ the son of the Living God and I accept him as my Lord and my savior we share that represent. So amen whatever he says to do do it. I love that. I want to live my life that way do you? I've got a friend who lives my life that his his life that way what you could live my life for me cuz he's very very good at following Jesus Dean Mathis. He's the the leader of the Mexico mission trip trip that we do each year. He's a guy who led me to the Lord when I was a freshman in college at East Tennessee State University. He was the campus Minister now, he's on staff at Max Lucado Church in San Antonio, Texas. He is a fantastic Christian man. And one of the one of the men that I know that's most like Jesus, especially in this regard because whatever Jesus would tell him to do he will do it. And whenever you spend time with him you experienced this kind of like when we would go on trips with him either mission trips or just traveling or doing things no matter what we say. Where's Dean? We're staying we turn around he's gone. He's got we look at he was witnessing to someone in a laundromat, you know how to hang in there and you will we're going to stop working to baptize a person of this church if we're going to go down this lady's house and help her fix something. He was always engaging people and serving them and loving them and challenging. The stories I can tell you. Honestly, I could fill the rest of the sermon with stories about Dean Mathis and and he would say don't talk about me talk about Jesus. That's why I do those things. That's what it's Jesus that's working in me, but he's so good at living out that Simplicity of whatever it is. Jesus would ask you to do would compel you to do you just do it. You didn't hesitate there's not he's never embarrassed. He's he doesn't he's never afraid to go for somebody and start witnessing to him. He's never afraid to say you got a problem here. Can I help you with that? He'll just to meet Lee engaged is even willing to confront people. I've been with him when he confronted a gentleman as a group from Mexico. We've been working in Mexico all summer on the summer of 86. That's how far back our relationship goes and we went to also shoot raw swindoll's church first Evangelical Free Church of the detail. Shut up. Sorry the great church. I'm sure we had unusual experience that Sunday, but we went that Sunday and we were all straight out of Working in Mexico. So we we didn't have pressed Sunday morning clean clothes as matter fact. It was the officer that wasn't Sunday morning clothes and they weren't pressing where Glee but we wanted to worship. We want to go to church and we went into church and a deacon stopped us and said you're not dressed appropriately to be in church. Now the rest of us just where intimidated by this megachurch and everything is going on and Dean step for the front and pull the Deaconess and said you're not representing Christ appropriately. And he told him who we were what we're doing and said be thankful that we're saved that we extend Grace one another we all know we have bad moments, but brother what if we've been lost people coming to hear the gospel. Beans got both the love. He'll give you the money out of his wallet the shirt off his back and I'll also speak difficult roof to you when that's necessary a lot like Jesus and I aspire to follow Jesus the way Dean follows Jesus Christian Author credits a guy named Bill Joba Pastor in business man living in China with introducing him to a simple focused life-changing how to wisdom and following Jesus. He's got a book on that and really what Claire does is the same thing that Bob did for me years ago in the same thing that I said lived out in the life of D the same thing that married in some ways when she said here's what to do whatever he says to do do it that Simplicity he calls it the 10-second Rule and I think it's a great way to go from saying whatever Jesus says to do do it. Let's put a little meat on that was put on the flash on that. How come we live that out Beyond just that General impulse and he said he comes up with this rule, which I think they're great. Really cause at the 10-second rule just do the next Saying you're reasonably certain Jesus wants you to do and commit to do it immediately in the next 10 seconds before you change your mind. Do you like that rule? He said he's 31. He went from being a Christian who just kind of showed up at church and assumed everything was good to have in his life transform because he introduced to that principle and he decided to live by that principle to Simply do whatever it was that he was reasonably certain Jesus wanted him to do and to do it immediately before he changed his mind. Can you relate to the wisdom of that little simple truth? Just like Mary said to the servants whatever he says to do do it. That's what it means to be a disciple to be a Christian. It means obeying Jesus. It couldn't get any simpler than that couldn't that's the essence of what it means. It means to obey Jesus until the heart of what we're striving to do. I think is captured in a very simple and straightforward way in that rule. Now the truth is there's Dean and then there's me. I like the Simplicity. I like the focus. I like the promise of that rule, but I don't always succeed in doing everything. The Jesus asked me to do can can can I get an amen or should we say they've been to that? Maybe not can you relate to that struggle? But sometimes we know what Jesus wants us to do and we still don't do it. Sometimes we have that impulse to do a certain thing and we still don't act on it. The reality is there are Holy Spirit impulses in our life. We tweet we drive by somebody with car trouble and we have that moment. We think I should stop. You know, I'm a guy I'm by myself. I've got the time, you know, I can't I need to stop I need to stop and help that person. But we do sometimes or somebody with a personal name and it's obvious maybe worth some situation where somebody is in the hospital ER maybe in the doctor's office were around maybe a restaurant or something. It's clear. They've got some kind of Crisis hit her sitting all by himself and cry and what am I supposed to just really awkward? I'm just going to ask want to get buy sometimes we feel the awkwardness of that need. And so we just kind of figure out how can I avoid this instead of acting on it? Or maybe God pricks her heart to share the gospel with somebody. And you think are you kidding me? This is a banker. He's wearing a suit and tie set the car. I'm talking to him about alone. And the holy spirit's messing up my day. I'm supposed to start talking this guy about Jesus. He's going to say you're some sort of weirdo. Cancel that long. That's embarrassing. I think sometimes we have those impulses, but we don't act on it because just like there's a reality of Holy Spirit impulses. There's a reality of our counter to the Holy Spirit we have this freezing in hermanus is look at you can't help everyone, you know and until we just kind of pass by that person that might need help with a look that person might be a most I mean if I going and what is the emotionally needy and then then then it's going to tie up my entire afternoon and I've got commitments this afternoon. You don't like it has a packet of beef. I can't get involved in somebody else and aren't there other people who it's somebody else's job in the government help these people in financial needs shouldn't and I got family. You don't want so before we don't have to be embarrassing if I start a conversation with somebody so we have all these counter impulses. Counter voices Intermountain anybody relate to what I'm saying? Do you have Holy Spirit impulses to do something that you know is the right thing to do the Jesus thing to do, it's Jesus telling you to do this and then does your mind immediately start countering why it's not reasonable to do that. Right? This is what the priest and levite probably did on the road. Right when they saw a Good Samaritan. Well, he's a need but I can't be late for synagogue and all these the reasonable safe voice kind of takes over and before you know it that car with the hood up is in your rearview mirror and you're not giving it any more thought that procrastination is what empowers disobedience Or maybe we get obsessed with certainty. You know, I feel that I feel the Lord pick my heart to witness to somebody but then I start this whole time I am I sure that's the Lord, you know, am I sure that he wants me that witness in the end of my maybe I'm not having sex sure. Maybe it would be you know, and then I just enough Gap enough time passes and then I feel comfortable saying I'll just not do that one person. Give me to tell the story about a Christian who got on a bus in the bus was empty and went to the back of the bus and he said down and he said Lord if you want me to witness to anyone today, you just let me know Just Give Me A Sign Lord, cuz the bus is empty felt safe. Bring that little prayer benefit next stop a guy got on the bus and walked all the way to the back of the bus and set right down beside him and said, would you tell me about Jesus? And the guy said just a moment. He prayed Lord. If you want me to win this to this fellow, please change the bus driver into an armadillo. We tweet we have those sorts of me know when it's all clear. But we still keep asking for one more sign would you am I not until we see this certainty and it becomes a way to procrastinate from obedience. Paul talks about this and Roman 7 in the message translation. He says it happened. So regularly that is predictable. The moment I decide to do good sin is there to trip me up? I truly delighted in God's come in but it's pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that Delight parts of me covertly robelf. And just when I least expected they take charge. So this was not an uncommon experience. Paul said look, I have these impulses right when I think I'm going to do good. It is my own voice that I'll turn to voice its we sometimes we want to call it the devil we want to call at the world. The truth is it's our own voice its parts of us that don't want to give in to the lordship of Christ. It's the part of me that wants my pride. I don't want to be embarrassed to start talking to this bank or about Jesus and he's going to think I'm a weird that's my voice wanted to protect my ego and my friend. I don't want to stop and help that person. You don't mind a is planned out and it's already packed too much and that's my voice. That's that's the part of me that doesn't want to be submitted to Christ. So that little battle the holy spirit gives me the good impulse and then I have all these reasons if I can just get that argument going on long enough to put that need in my rear-view. Then I can go on with my day focused on me and I miss out on having a life filled with those Dean stories those Jesus stories. Were you encounter people and you serve them and you Minister them and their life is different and your life is different because God used you that day in that way. We miss out on the very transformation that will go to bed that night and prayed dear Lord. Help me be a better Christian dear Lord. Help me be a better husband. Help me be a better wife Lord help me change in this way. Help me change in that way and we don't even realize that during that very day. He was opening doors and saying step right through this door. It will be an answer to those prayers that you've been offering to me. Sometimes we just miss.

That opportunity we need to remember the real purpose of Grace is to do what I can't it should never be an excuse for what I want. I think about that for a moment.

The purpose of Grace is to cover the gap. Of the things that I cannot do on my own I cannot make myself wholly. I cannot live a life of absolute and complete perfect obedience and surrender to God and so the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ covers that Gap, but Grace isn't intended to go beyond that Gap and to relieve me from doing the things that I can do. You see the logic of that but sometimes I think the adversary get to victory in our thinking because we say to herself well because of the grace of Jesus, he's fine with me just surrendering part of my life. He's fine with me. Not really trying to help those in need. He's fine with me having my day planned out for me and not really that he's good with that Grace Just covers all of that. I think sometimes we misunderstand Grace Grace covers that Gap that we need covered for salvation. Amen. We are saved our Salvation is secure. So don't miss hear anything. I'm saying regarding that Grace is not intended as an excuse for us to not follow Jesus in the ways that we can. amen

navigate to me a men's on that.

It's no fun to realize that to a certain extent is it? I like the idea of thinking Grace covers. Everything everything so I don't really even have to try. But that's not what Grace covers Grace covers what I cannot do but I'm still invited and challenged to do what I can. I'm invited and I'm challenged to be a disciple of Jesus Christ to follow him to the best of my ability. Now when I'm striving to do that and I fail Grace covers that but I'm talking about the spirit that says I'm not even going to try that. The grace of Jesus is an excuse to kind of say he's really happy with just Sunday mornings and the thing can accurately about what scripture says. To the challenges for us to obey that rule that look perfect. Surrender is impossible not talking about that but doing the next thing I'm reasonably certain Jesus wants me to do that isn't impossible.

Right, that's not impossible. And when you fail when I have that moment when I left the car with a with the hood up getting my rear-view mirror even in that moment. I can say okay Jesus. I failed. What's what's the next thing you want me to do to help? But but maybe he'll maybe he'll impressing me. What kept you from doing that maybe maybe he'll challenge me to reflect a little bit. Why didn't you stop? Well I did I didn't have a lick of cash in my wallet. I thought how am I going to help them? You know, it's going to be a big mass or I don't have jumper cables in my car. And so maybe it becomes this practical wisdom where he says what why don't you carry cash for now. I just a little bit or why don't you stick an extra cheap pair of jumper cables in your car? So you always have those cable so that you don't have that excuse next time so that you can stop and help. Or maybe I say will it was a woman? I felt like I start this, this woman is going to see me or something like that. And maybe this is Walden. Do you know somebody that you can have on your speed dial that you can call and say hey, will you help this individual? Cuz it might not be a pro see how you can bring in wisdom to the concept of a bang and you don't have to say I don't know what to do. So I don't do anything and said you can say since I didn't do it this time. What do I need to learn from this missed opportunity to possibly be more ready next time to help the rule addresses the procrastination that we sometimes use the excuse for Disobedience and our session with certainty I think about it. Think about this rule. The next time you're reasonably certain Jesus wants you to do something just do it. Just do the next thing you're reasonably certain you want you not to be absolutely certain that you have to reasonably certain you bring reason into the mix. And if you're reasonably certain he want you to do something then just do it and don't hesitate don't hesitate because if you hesitate often times that will be the excuse not to do it. And so as soon as I get that the guy across the table I should say he could can I talk to you about something personal I need to get that sentence out of my mouth so that I'm accountable right off of that. Can I talk to you about Jesus? He might stay here. And maybe outside could we have lunch sometime? I just really feel like the Lord put it on my heart that that your burdens are on burdens or something. I just need to embrace that awkwardness. He may say no. I'm not having lunch with you and let's just focus on this loan and then I say, okay, you know, that's all I can do is be faithful to the impulse that God is putting on my heart. If he sang to me witness to this person bring me up to this person. I can't control what they're going to do, but I can control what I'm going to do whether I'm obedient or not.

Scripture is the God will close in just a few moments with these last Point scripture is the guide. So don't mishear me. It is V guide to making these sorts of decisions knowledge about Jesus and his character is key. So I'm not talking about acting on any little impulse that pops in your head and saying well, so I'm going to go do it. I'm not talking about major decisions. You know who you're going to marry what job is going to take when you're going to move from one home to the other those are decisions that often involve longer periods of time and Brothers and Sisters in Christ that you bring into your life for wisdom and counsel. I'm talking about those small daily decision that you know are true to scripture. Okay, so I don't want this rule to be abused or misused or excuse for something self-defeating or odd or weird in our lives is in the context of scripture. It's in the context of the character of Christ. It's in the context of daily really in some way simple decisions that were challenged to say, you know, what the next thing that I'm reasonably sure. Just wants me to do I need to do it. Whether it's just being kind of somebody whether it's asking somebody who seems upset. Can I pray for you? Even though part of me says it's going to sound weird. Nobody prays for anybody in public anymore. We just resist that inside. Look at the Lord has asked me to do that. I need to do that or can I buy somebody's lunch. Maybe you see somebody scrambling through their purse to pay for their groceries and may the Lord says you should buy their groceries and you think it's weird. I don't even know me and then people in behind the line behind me a lot of going to think it's weird and you know, what am I going to have my credit card? What is a what is a season up, you know all these little things run through her head instead of just saying Lord if that's what you're telling me to do. Then I was going to do it. Without letting that hesitation be an excuse not to do it. Jesus said his sheep follow him because they know his voice. I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me so as we grow in knowledge and understanding of Jesus and in his character and his teachings, then we grow more confident in knowing when he's giving us an Impulse when the Holy Spirit is calling us and leading us to do something because we know it connects and it parallels the things that Jesus talked and did he said in John 1350. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you and I John 14-15. He says if you love me keep my commands. Can you see how a bang Jesus is? The heart of Christianity is the heart of discipleship. So having this little rule of life that marry other to the service whatever he says to do do it is a great rule of life for Christians to say whenever I'm reasonably certain that Jesus is giving me this impulse. It's always feared his giving his impulse something I can do I should do and I Know It lines up with scripture doesn't contradict scripture that I need to ask. I need to go by I need to trust God. I need to push past my anxiety or my fear or my hesitation or my embarrassment and just do that thing. Now you need to know more about Jesus than read the Gospel of Luke read it over and over. It's a great way to be aware of how he treated people how he interacted with people the things he did you get there's 24 chapter. So save yourself on the next month, you'll read through the Gospel of Luke. You don't study it look up Greek words or anything like that. You're just going to read through it that gives you 6 days of grace. If you read a chapter that you can mess up the six days and be done in 30 days reading through the Gospel of Luke and just saying you don't want to notice what Jesus does so that I can be aware when he's calling me to do those same sort of things or listen to last Sunday sermon, how many people were here last Sunday? I listen to David Sanford sermon online this week was an excellent sermon. He did a great job of giving this overview of the Gospel of John and then taking a couple of snapshots of the life of Jesus what he was like and how he behaved that's that's a great resource and there's many many resources just to get to know Jesus more and more if you're that beginning stage and then look for ways that you can be like him. So the worship team can come forward. Here's our assignment this week because I think what we all have in common is when we were singing Holy Holy Holy. We love the Lord. And we believe he's good. We believe he's holy. We believe he's worth following. We all have in common that we want to follow him better. We want to feel our lives with stories like my friend Dean has in his life. We want to fill our life with stories that line up with what we read in the gospels about Jesus about God using us to minister to others are the serve others about being willing to offer a kind word or hand of help or even a challenging word when that's the appropriate thing. Sometimes stuff goes on right around people and nobody bothers to say. Hey, that's not acceptable. Sometimes the right thing to do is have a little backbone step up and say hey. You need to take a breath here for you swing that child around by her arm again. You might get punched. Be the best punch you ever receive. Sometimes the right thing to do is to something this risky. I'm not saying go out start fights. By Saving Willie do the right thing when you know, it's something Jesus challenging you do the holy spirit is challenging you to do. So, so apply that this week in small daily biblical Holy Spirit impulses. We apply that this week.

And we report back next week, maybe next Sunday. We just all share stories that honestly if everyone of us said starting today, I'm going to buy into that rule that Bob's their the number one thing whatever he says to do do it. If all of us did that this week, we we would have so many stories when we I mean, we could spend 10 weeks of services are people on stage sing. Well at the grocery store and there's lady couldn't pay for groceries and I have that Robbie and the Holy Spirit. I felt like a lord said pay for that. So I went and paid and then they broke down and cried. And so I got to pray with her to tell me how to just let you know all this stuff and there you were the answer to prayer when she was saying God do you care for me at all came by my kids food and she's playing on her breath and suddenly this Christian acts on the impulse that God put in their life, or maybe you can somebody this week. Maybe we'll have stories about some of the more difficult things we said hey, That's not good. Can I help you out you seem to be having a hard moment instead of saying that's an emotional mess at the train wreck in the middle of that. Somebody else will take care of that. Think of the stories that we would have in our life of Christ working in and through us. So I'll commit to it. If you'll commit to it. Okay. Starting to that today and for the next week, we will strive to the best of our ability to do the next thing we're reasonably sure that Jesus wants us to do and when we fail to do that, which we will know by the way you will fail to do that at certain times. We will treat ourselves with Grace and realize that even in that moment the same rule applies done it even in the midst of our failure we say well Jesus I certainly blue that you were screaming at my heart with the Holy Spirit for 10 minutes and I ignored it completely and got out of that building got my car and got down the street. So now what What I do next. And maybe it's just repentance and asking yourself. What would help me do that right next time. But it wouldn't be having somebody with me if I'm going to I'm going to be in a difficult conversation. I'm having a friend with me to help me handle that better next time. So even when you fail, you can still go back and say Jesus. What's the next thing you want me to do even even in that moment. I read one author. Once that said even in the midst of your sin, do you realize you can call out to God to break your heart and turn you back to him ever get into that that false thinking where you're you're thinking about a saint or you've already made the decision and you feel so bad about it that you think will I just have to be distant from God and so you just go ahead and finish off that saying you're rude to somebody you tell him off even though, you know, you even got there in the moment, you know, I should not let my anger and you do it he's like, well, I'll just Bravo and be distant from God for a few days and then I can go back to God after I punish myself by being distant from him all that's pause thinking even in the moment when your 10% into that argument that you know, you should not be if you can say holy spirit. Show me right now that you could say you know, what? I'm sorry. I shouldn't be talking to you this way. forgive me even in that moment or even right with the moments done in your fresh with guilt over you can say Lord. I need you. I'm sorry. I blew it. You don't have to wait or self punished. That's what Christ took our punishment for so that at any moment for 16 says we can approach his throne boldly knowing knowing we will receive the grace and the help that we need to even as we strive to obey his grace is there to meet us at every turn the challenges to keep striving to keep striving to keep saying I want to do the thing he wants me to do back in obedience. Now this morning we're going to sing a song here in a moment. We'll have prayer team members both in the front and the back. I'll be in the back if you have a prayer need if the Lord puts it on your heart that you should come to me or one of her parrot team and they prayed for then don't deny that impulse. Come to us and let us pray for you. Let us pray with you about that concern if you've got a decision to make if you want to join the church, or or give your life to Christ, or maybe you just have questions then come to me or one of our leaders and let us pray with you. Let us answer your questions and talk with you or pulled me aside or another leader side after the service and let us talk with you.
