OLD PATHS AND NEW WINESKINS Part 2

Jeremiah 6:16
Jeremiah 6:16 KJV 1900
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
Matthew 9:17
Matthew 9:17 KJV 1900
Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

OLD PATHS AND NEW WINESKINS

I began working on a message for the Sunday that we had to cancel because of the rain
And all that week as I was attempting to prepare- I ran into one obstacle after another- and finally had determined that last Saturday I would spend the day in my office making preparation to preach that Sunday.
And as you know the weather didn't cooperate and I wasn't able to finish prepare- in fact this week much of the week I was stranded at home until I was able to get a boat etc.
When I began to prepare, I struggled with the direction- I spent a great deal of time preparing only to realize that I was head in the wrong direction so to speak.
I tried to prepare a message more fitting to the situation that we are faced with in this state- with the floods etc. but the Holy Spirit said NO!
Last week I preached what I felt was part (1) and this week I want to conclude the message.
Last week we concentrated on the first scripture:
Jeremiah 6:16
Jeremiah 6:16 KJV 1900
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
We looked at the 3 points
1. Stand - In the good ways/ the old Paths
2. See/look Earnestly- for the good Ways /The Old Paths
3. Ask- For the good Ways /The Old Paths
We concentrated on some of the error's that the modern church has fallen for in the effort of church growth-
As we said last week; It doesnt matter what direction the church heads in- If it is not the truth-
If it does not conform to the Word of God, it is error and we must not only run from it but we must warn others of it's dangers!
Gods true path- Gods "old Path" is still JEsus Christ and Him Crucified!
1 Corinthians 2:2
1 Corinthians 2:2 KJV 1900
For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
If your program- your structure or your doctrine is not based squarely on Christ and his Word then its False Doctrins and it is spiritual POISON!
When the Lord began to deal with me about this message he brought to my mind the second scriture that we are using;
Matthew 9:17
Matthew 9:17 KJV 1900
Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
Now before we get started the KJV translators translated the word "Wine Skins"- Bottles these were not "bottles like you and I are thinking but they are actually skins of animals
I don’t know if any of you have seen the kind of wineskins they use in the Middle East, but they are quite large and ugly!
A wineskin is made of leather, the most common of which is goatskin.
Goatskin is better -suited for craftsman to handle because of its flexibility. Goat skin is harder wearing, increasing the life of the wineskin.
After selecting and removing the skin, it is cleaned and tanned with fire from the acacia tree
These skins after they were prepared and sown together then used to hold the wine.

Let's stop there and look at the new wine and new wineskins

When a person is born-again they are a new creation
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV 1900)
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
At the moment of salavtion we are made BRAND NEW!
Everything in our life is made new
Romans 6:4 (KJV 1900)
Romans 6:4 KJV 1900
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
And as new believers he calls us to walk in that newness of life!
Thre is nothing like watching a brand new believer explore the freedom and victory that is found in nothing else like Jesus.
When you see someone who has lived their life whether it was 8 years or 80 years bound by sin and see them begin to walk in freedom for the first time and enjoy that liberty it makes a heart so glad!
That new wine begins to flow into that new life and that new wine skin can barely conatin the joy that it contains
But unfortunatly often times that fire that burn in a new beliver somehow get s quenched-
Maybe its by hurt from another believer, or by failure, or some other reason but that new wine that once flowed out from taht new wineskin begins to stop flowing

Old Wine Skins

When a Wineskins is no longer being used it is Now picture the same thing all dried up! When wineskins were not being used, they would toss them outside usually by the side of their houses (or tents).
As the wineskin would sit outside in the weather, the sun beating down on it, it would dry up and would become hard. The material or outer shell of a good wineskin would be flexible, but if it sat outside in the hot sun and not being used, then it would dry up and get really hard.
That is a picture of our life outside of faith in what he has done for us!
That is a picture of our life ructing, clinging attempting to live our life by means of something other than the faith in what he has accomplished for us!
What was once a life of liberty and freeedon and freshness is now a dried up shell of what he deires of us!
Most of the church would respond to the sight of a dried up shell of a christian by throwing them aside and telling them that they no longer fit our narative-
You arent a good spokesperson for what we are trying to advertise
We all undserstand that as the permentation begins that gasses develop and the bag begins to swell,
The problem starts when they want to use this wineskin again.
If they pour new wine in the wineskin, the new wine would start to ferment. And if the wineskin is dry and hard, then it won’t expand – it would only crack –
thus damaging the wineskin and causing the new wine to pour out of it. Ruining both.
Sometimes what we read in our bibles dont give us the full meaning of the words that the writers used and you have to dig little deper
This is true in the the Greek translation of the word “New” in this scripture.
Luke 5:37 KJV 1900
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
When we look at the phrase “New Wine” – the Greek word actually means something that is “Brand New” (neos) –
However when we look at the Greek word for “New Wineskin”, it is referring to something that has been renewed (kainos).
So how do you take an old wineskin and renew it?
Simple- but it involved a process
They would take the old dried up wineskin and submerge it under water for a while.
They would bring the wineskin out of the water and they would start to rub olive oil on the wineskin.
They would repeat this process until the wineskin was soft and flexible. This was their way of making a “new” or “renewed” wineskin.
Our spiritual lives are like the wineskin. If we are not using our spiritual lives, then we are like the unused wineskin.
And over time we allow all of life’s troubles to beat down on us and dry up everything that was once joy.
The problem is, we go to church expecting the church to fix the problem. When sometimes, it simply can’t be done. It’s something that you alone have to do yourself.
So what’s the process? Simple….really it is.
1. Water
We are Refreshed in the word.
Ephesians 5:26 (KJV 1900)
Ephesians 5:26 KJV 1900
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
The word of God is the key!
2 Peter 1:3
2 Peter 1:3 KJV 1900
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
The key to becoming who Christ has called and destined for us to be is not found anywhere but in the Word Of God
2. OIL
Now, it isnt talking about rubbing oil on our physical bodies, its what is referred to as oil in the Bible – the Holy Spirit.
It is a work of the spirit to renew our old wineskins onto a tool he can use!
It doesnt matter how long we may heve been in error, it doesnt matter how much pain we may have endured
It doesnt matter how much hurt there may be -
It is the work of the holy spirit to make us NEW again!
