1. Changed Lifestyle (vv.
5-9)
"Consider as dead"....utterly kill, cease, stop completely (imperative)
People hate change don't they?
How many of us here today really like change?
We develop the best lifestyle we can forourselves and have been taught by society to become as independant as possible.
The Bible teaches to be dependant on God...not ourselves, not our family members, not our friends...only Him.
Here, Paul tells us to change our lifestyle ...after we have beeen saved... perhaps thats because without the pwer and presence of hte Holy SPirit in our lives , cnaging our lifestyle is not a possibility.
We need God's help to do that.
Look what he tells us to stop, kill or cease doing...SIN.
Notice Paul says of this sin...immorality, impuruty, passion evil desire, greed, lying, anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech
You once walked in them...you once were practicing them some had stopped, perhaps some were still practicing.
2. Changed Image (vv.
10-11)
The old image was based on the old self, that embraced your sinful nature.
We are to be covered in Christlikeness.
"Put on" means "covered in" or "covering."
Being conformed to His image comes from obtaining and applying "true knowledge" means personal knowledge.
It reminds me of
Peter doesn't give Him and academic answer... Peter answers personally,
Whn people begin to know Jesus personally, there is a supernatural unity.
We are one people, God's people, one race, God's race.
We are called to be an image bearers.
When we become image bearers, Christ is all we see on the outside and on the inside, He is all and in all.
He is our everything.
3. Changed Heart (vv.
12-15)
Cover yourseves with a heart of compassion.
Many of you are thinking, that compassion is a gift...and you're right.
But its a gift that is given to every beleiver when the power and presence of the Holy Spirit empowers you at conversion.
A heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience
humility is a normal response to seeing your sinful self in contrast to the holiness of God.
gentleness...of gentle mind, even tempered, slow to speak
bearing with one another...to endure unpleasant or difficult situations
Love...the bond of unity
4. Changed Perspective (vv.
16-17)
let peace rule....
peace is the absence of mental stress or anxiety, you cannot have peace without hte prince of peace.
you cannot have peace without
let the Word Dwell
When you let peace rule Your lives and the Word dwell within, then worship is the natural response.
And so your lives need to be an act of worship.
Invitation:
When we set our minds on the things above (v.
2) it is going to effect our character.
If we are praying fro Christlikeness, wanting to be covered in Christlikeness, then this is the do, for us.
Paul is not telling us what we must do to be saved, he is telling us how we will act if we are saved.
