Psalm 92:10

10 But my horn shalt thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil. [i]

“FRESH OIL”

INTRO:

The second law of thermodynamics is this: EVERYTHING TENDS TOWARDS DISORDER.

"left to itself, an isolated system tends toward a state of maximum disorder"

Left on their own, isolated from outside influence, things tend to get worse, not better.

Hebrews 1:10-11

10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands: 11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; [ii]

This is why evolution simply cannot be true!

The theory of evolution says that things have progressively gotten better, smarter, more advanced without any outside influence!

Things tend to get worse when left on their own, not better.

I.)           EVERYTHING IN OUR LIVES, LEFT UNTENDED, WILL EVENTUALLY FALL APART AND DISINTEGRATE!

A.)    Your body will fall apart if you don’t take care of it!

If you don’t believe that, try not brushing your teeth for a while!

Tooth decay occurs when your teeth are frequently exposed to foods containing carbohydrates (starches and sugars) like soda pop, candy, ice cream, milk, cakes, and even fruits, vegetables and juices. Natural bacteria live in your mouth and forms plaque. The plaque interacts with deposits left on your teeth from sugary and starchy foods to produce acids. These acids damage tooth enamel over time by dissolving, or demineralizing, the mineral structure of teeth, producing tooth decay and weakening the teeth, eventually causing them to fall out of your head!

B.)    Your home

If you don’t check for termites on a regular basis, you might find your house falling down around your ears!

Buildings are built on top of the ground, of course, and termites exploit the small cracks in building foundations to enter a structure.  Once these termite pathways have been established, termites will work 24 hours a day, all year long.  Workaholics in the true sense of the word.

C.)    Your car

If you don’t take that car in for an oil change the engine will eventually seize up on you.

If you don’t take it in for a wash once in a while, the salt will eventually eat through the protective seal coat and begin to corrode that metal, and one day you will drive down the road with the quarter panels flapping in the breeze!

D.)   Your yard!

Thanks to our Father, Adam, we now have to work the soil! If you just don’t do anything, your yard will grow up to the point where you eventually can’t see over it! Unfortunately, it won’t mow itself! Of course, the city of Muskegon will do it for you for a small fee!

But, it doesn’t take care of itself.

E.)    Your marriage!

One of the problems in many marriages is this: The things you did to get your mate, you won’t do to keep them!

The sweet nothings you whispered in her ear to woo her and convince her to marry you, guys, will not be enough to suffice 5 years down the road!

She needs fresh romance, fresh love, fresh affirmation!

II.)      THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE MUST GUARD AGAINST DETERIORATION IS OUR WALK WITH GOD!

It’s been a while since we have allowed the outside influence of the Holy Ghost to work in our lives, and things in our hearts are tending toward maximum disorder!

We think things will get better on their own, but I am telling you that if we don’t practice some spiritual maintenance, it won’t be long before decay, deterioration, disintegration takes over and our spirits will be destroyed!

I feel so strongly on my heart these last few weeks that God desires us to renew our relationship with Him!

Ø    Some of us are trying to survive on stale bread!

Ø    Some of us are trying to find direction from stale vision!

Ø    Some of us are trying to stay saved with stale Holy Ghost!

Ø    Some of us are tying to shout with stale joy!

Ø    Some of us are trying to keep smiling with stale hope!

But, its time to put down the sword, push away the plate, lock ourselves up with the Lord and find some fresh oil!

Philippians 2:12 12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, /work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. [iii]/

Salvation is a journey! And I must work at staying saved, I must maintain that salvation!

I am sorry to cross theological swords with some, but there is no Biblical backing for the theory of “ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED!”

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:27

27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

[iv]

For this cause Paul makes another statement in 1 Corinthians 15:31

31…….. I die daily.  [v]

I don’t ever want to wake up and say,

Ø    “I don’t need to pray today!”

Ø    “I don’t need to repent today!”

Ø    “I have finally arrived, I can rest now!”

There is not a day that goes by that I don’t need to be in the presence of Jesus!

There is not a day that goes by that I don’t need to feel the power of the only one that can:

Ø    Forgive sin

Ø    Restore my joy

Ø    Renew my mind

Ø    Cleanse my heart

Left to my own, isolated, untouched by the Master’s hand, I am tending toward maximum disorder, but everyday I want to be anointed with:

Ø    Fresh oil,

Ø    Fresh anointing,

Ø    Fresh Holy Ghost,

Ø    Fresh vision,

Ø    Fresh strength!

III.) THE PSALMIST STATES A VERY POWERFUL TRUTH IN OUR PASSAGE THIS MORNING, AND THAT IS THE NEED FOR FRESHNESS!

a.)  David speaks often in the Psalms of he need for today’s oil for today, not yesterday’s oil for today!

Psalm 61:8

8 So will I sing praise unto thy name for ever, that I may daily perform my vows.

[vi]

Psalm 68:19

19 Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. [vii]

Psalm 72:15

15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.  [viii]

Psalm 86:3

3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.  [ix]

b.)  The manna was supposed to be gathered daily, enough only for that day. Only on the eve of the Sabbath were they to gather enough for the next day.

If they tried to keep today’s manna until tomorrow, the Bible says it rotted, stank, and worms came out of it!

Yesterday’s manna is not good enough for today!

c.)   Jesus said in the Lord’s prayer, Matthew 6:11

11 Give us this day our daily bread. [x]

d.)  In Luke 9:23 he goes on to say:

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [xi]

e.)   The Apostles understood the need for daily dedication!

Acts 2:46-47

46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,  47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

[xii]

Acts 5:42

42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

[xiii]

f.)    We need freshness in our worship!

Psalm 33:3

3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise. [xiv] (5 times)

2319 chadash { khaw-dawsh’}

AV - new 48, new thing 4, fresh 1; 53

g.)  Every morning when you and I wake up, we need fresh mercy!

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. [xv]

It doesn’t matter what happened yesterday, how badly we have failed, how far we went astray, there is fresh mercy for today!

IV.)  THE DANGER WE FACE WHEN WE FAIL TO RENEW DAILY IS LOSING JESUS.

Luke 2:41-47

41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. [xvi]

1.) Where did his parents lose Him?

They lost him in Jerusalem, city of God. The church!

Ø    It is possible to stay in the church and lose the presence of God!

2.) When did they lose him?

Custom of the feast. They lost Jesus while they were still fulfilling their customs! They lost Jesus while they were still going through the rituals.

Ø    It is possible to fulfill our customs, standards, rules and regulations and lose Jesus!

3.) Why did they lose him?

They supposed He was with them! They didn’t bother to check, they just assumed!

Just like Samson when he arose and knew not that the presence of God had departed from him!

Ø    How can we sit in the church and lose the Holy Ghost? How can we sit in the presence of Jesus Christ Himself and lose Him?

When we fail to renew our acquaintance with Jesus daily! When we just assume that we are okay, that he is still with us!

4.) Where did they find Jesus?

They didn’t find him in the company of friends and acquaintances!

Ø    They didn’t find him through the experiences of fellow saints, they found Him in the temple!

CONCLUSION:

Ø    Have you lost Jesus today through neglect?

Ø    Have you lost Jesus through lack of maintenance, and lack of relationship?

Ø    Have you just assumed that everything was okay, everything was going to stay the same?

Ø    If so, it’s time to come to this altar for a fresh anointing of oil!

Ø    It’s time to come back to the temple and find Jesus!
