New Year's Sermon (2005)
New Year’s Sermon (2005)
(1) A new year = a new start
(2) This year, let us resolve to have a faith that knows, grows, and shows.
I. A Faith that Knows
A. Unfortunately, many people are “destroyed for a lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6).
B. Instead, we need to be prepared to make a defense (cf. 1 Peter 3:15).
C. As Paul, we should be ser for the defense of the gospel (cf. Phil. 1:16).
D. In order to accomplish this, we must study (cf. 2 Tim. 1:15).
E. As a result, we will know in whom we have believed (cf. 2 Tim. 1:12).
II. A Faith that Grows
A. We are to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord (cf. 2 Pet. 3:18).
B. We are to desire pure spiritual milk in order to grow thereby (cf. 1 Pet. 2:2).
C. A lack of growth is equated with being fleshly minded (cf. 1 Cor. 3:1ff.).
D. The Hebrew author rebuked some for the failure to grow (cf. Heb. 5:11ff.).
E. In order to grow, one must abide in the vine (cf. John 15:1-11).
III. A Faith that Shows
A. According to James 2:14-17, a faith without works is dead.
B. We are to let our light shine (cf. Matt. 5:13-16).
C. A living faith will be seen:
1. At worship services
2. Outside of worship services
3. In a life of service, even in the ‘small things’ (cf. Matt. 25)
- Will you pay attention to your faith this year?
