21st Sunday After Pentecost

Luke 18:9-14

Jesus tells a parable about our need for humility and God’s Grace.

Pharisee thanks God that he needs nothing.  He has examined himself and found himself to be perfect in every important way especially as he compares himself to the trash of a man, the tax collector.

The tax collector asks for God’s forgiveness after examining himself and finding that he was indeed a sinner and in need of salvation.

“If we could somehow be as perfect as we think we are, what would we need Jesus for?”

Robert K. Pierce

“He who believes himself to be far advanced in the spiritual life has not even made a good beginning.”

Jean Pierre Camus

“Humility is the mother of salvation.”

Bernard of Clairveaux
