A Great Man

Great Character:
Acts 6:3 NKJV
Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business;
Acts 6:
Full of faith and power
Faith:
He trusted God wholeheartedly
Full of faith
Matthew 17:20 NKJV
So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
Matthew 17:20
Faith accomplishes great things!
which leads to....
Power
Natural outflow of being full of faith
Gods power worked in and through him.
He had absolute trust in God and God did great things
Working Great wonders and Signs
God answered prayers which Stephen prayed
He brought glory to Himself
Stephen wasn’t a super person...... the power was always God’s!
It was being full of faith that led to God empowering him and working signs and wonders.
AP: God still answers Prayer
James 5:13–18 NKJV
Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.
Trust God
-18
James 4:13 NKJV
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;
pray in faith when you pray
It isn’t just an exercise to make us feel good
Prayer is touching the heart of God.
James 1:5–6 NKJV
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.
Just as in wisdom, any prayer must be prayed in faith

A Wise Man

Men from various Synagogues disputed him.

It seems that this verse describes 3 synagogues: the Synagogue of the Freedmen, a second composed of Cyrenians and Alexandrians, and a third composed of those from Cilicia and Asia. Cultural and linguistic differences among the 3 groups make it unlikely they all attended the same synagogue

It seems that this verse describes 3 synagogues:

Synagogue. These were meeting places which began in the intertestamental period where the dispersed Jews (usually Hellenists), who did not have temple access, could meet in their community to worship and read the OT. See note on Mk 1:21. Freedmen. Descendants of Jewish slaves captured by Pompeii (63 B.C.) and taken to Rome. They were later freed and formed a Jewish community there. Cyrenians. Men from Cyrene, a city in North Africa. Simon, the man conscripted to carry Jesus’ cross, was a native of Cyrene (Lk 23:26). Alexandrians. Alexandria, another major North African city, was located near the mouth of the Nile River. The powerful preacher Apollos was from Alexandria (see note on 18:24). Cilicia and Asia. Roman provinces in Asia Minor (modern Turkey). Since Paul’s hometown (Tarsus) was located in Cilicia, he probably attended this synagogue. argued with Stephen. The word translated “argued” signifies a formal debate. They no doubt focused on such themes as the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the OT evidence that He was the Messiah.

1. the Synagogue of the Freedmen,
They were descendents of slaves captured by Pompeii (63 BC) and taken to Rome who were later freed and established a Jewish community.
2. a second composed of Cyrenians and Alexandrians,
Cyrenians
a city in North Africa
Alexandrians
Another major N. African city
3. a third composed of those from Cilicia and Asia.
Roman provinces in Asia Minor (Turkey)
Probably was Paul’s synagogue since he was from Tarsus in Cilicia
Cultural and linguistic differences among the 3 groups make it unlikely they all attended the same synagogue of Freedmen disputed hi

Synagogues originated in the Babylonian captivity after the 586 b.c. destruction of the temple by Nebuchadnezzar. They served as places of worship and instruction
They are a prominent feature in the NT
Jesus often taught there
Paul will later use these as a base of operations in every town
They Debated Stephen

They probably focused on such themes:
as the death and resurrection of Jesus
The OT evidence that He was the Messiah.
They couldn’t stand against him.
His wisdom and logic were superior
God helped him have superior wisdom and reasoning.
AP: God gives wisdom to His people
We read just a moment ago that God gives wisdom to those who ask
The book of Proverbs declares the value of wisdom and goes through the contrast of the wise vs the foolish in many situations of life.
Jesus had predicted this very thing:
Luke 21:12–15 NKJV
But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.
God is with us and gives us the words to say.
Peter has one this before the court
We will see Paul do this
We can do this!
Jude 3–4 NKJV
Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

An Accused Man

Acts 6:11–14 NKJV
Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council. They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”
Paid false witnesses to bring charges
Acts 6:11-14
Paid false witnesses to bring charges
They had used the same trick to arrest Jesus
when there is no evidence sufficient to accuse them, then they make it up and pay false witnesses to deliver the story.
specifically-
blaspheme against Moses and God
against Temple and Law
That Jesus would destroy the temple and change the customs.
Acts 6:15 NKJV
And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.
He was the picture of composure
He was calm and commanding even standing accused by false witnesses
AP: We will face opposition
If we live by faith......
If we share God’s love......
If we call people to repentance.....
We will find ourselves being opposed.
Those embracing sin will try to force our acceptance of their choice
This issue is front and center in many cases today
Those to whom we speak the truth in love, will scream quit hating!
FALSE IDEA: pointing out an error isn’t hate
IL: I had the “joy” of teaching the Bears (3rd grade cub scouts) how to use knives.
If I saw Joshua (or any other) about to use a knife in a way that will amputate their finger, it isn’t out of hate that I say STOP!!!!
It is love!
Sharing Gospel and calling for repentance is a loving thing to do!
Like the song says, we are trying to:
Rescue the perishing, care for the dying, Snatch them in pity from sin and the grave; Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.
snatch them in pity from sin and the grave.
Weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus, the mighty to save.
Conclusion: (Part 1)
Let us follow the example of Stephen:
Be people full of faith and power
Be wise and contend for the faith
Maintain composure when faced with opposition
