John 19:1–30 CSB
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe. 3 And they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and were slapping his face. 4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.” 5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the temple servants saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.” 7 “We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?” 11 “You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!” 13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic, Gabbatha). 14 It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!” 15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?” “We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered. 16 Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. 17 Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did. 25 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. 28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.

Jesus before Pilate 1-6

Chapter nineteen opens with a hideous act of torture. It baffles me how people over look what all Christ went through that day. John is explaining in detail all what Jesus had to absorb for our sins. How many of you really understand or have a decent grasp on “Roman Flogging” entailed?
They would take these long strands of twine and interweave them to make whips. While weaving them they would insert bone fragments and sharp rocks. They would take those who would be flogged and tie them to a stump that made them bend over. Their would be two Romans who would take turns whipping the person until they fell down. Jesus would receive 39 lashes with these whips. It would rip out his flesh, for our sins. The word “Flogged” means: to beat severely with a whip.

Zechariah 6:12 CSB
12 You are to tell him: This is what the Lord of Arimes says: Here is a man whose name is Branch; he will branch out from his place and build the Lord’s temple.
Jesus built His temple through His blood He spilt for each of us. He knew what had to be done to reconcile us back to the Father, His blood had to be spilt. He never complained, His confidence was radiant for us to see, and His will was to do the Father’s will. The religious elite wanted Him to be crucified. He took away their power and splendor.

Jesus’ Death Penalty 7-17

Pilate is not wanting to be a part of this crucifixion. Jesus is not guilty by Rome’s law; therefore, it is a Jewish matter. Matthew records that his wife has a vision.
Matthew 27:19 CSB
19 While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of him.”
He tells them to crucify Jesus themselves. But, listen to the Pharisees, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die.” The law they are talking about is
Leviticus 24:16 CSB
16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the Lord must be put to death; the whole community is to stone him. If he blasphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the resident alien or the native.
Pilate hears the statement and is now even more afraid. The word for afraid is...
Phobeo were we get phobia: it means to be in a state of fearing something or someone.
Pilate is the ruler over Jerusalem, at his disposal is an army of the elite and he is afraid of Christ. We too should be afraid of the power of the Lord, without His death we perish just as Pilate and the Pharisees did! Pilate runs back in and asks the Lord where He is from. Jesus does not answer to fulfill the prophecy in
Isaiah 53:7 CSB
7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth.
Pilate explains to the Creator that he has the authority to crucify Him. Listen this is comical when you think about the creation once again trying to tell the Creator what all his power and authority entails. God is the only One who has ultimate and full power.
Listen to Jesus’ explanation to Pilate. Nobody has any authority over Christ unless it is given to him by the Father. All authority belongs to God and governments receive their authority from God.

Romans 13:1–2 CSB
1 Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God. 2 So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves.
Pilate wants to release Jesus after questioning Him again and being afraid of Christ. But the Sanhedrin court want Jesus crucified, their ill-will towards Christ steamed out of their prideful desire. They would not budge so Pilate handed Christ over to be crucified.
Listen to the Sanhedrin’s response to Pilate’s question. “We have no king but Caesar.” We are either loyal to God or friends with the world. Just as they used their alliance with Rome to receive what they wanted, people today will bend to the world.
The chief priests (οἱ ἀρχιερεις [hoi archiereis]) were Sadducees, who had no Messianic hope like that of the Pharisees. So to carry their point against Jesus they renounce the principle of the theocracy that God was their King ().

1 Samuel 12:12 CSB
12 But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was coming against you, you said to me, ‘No, we must have a king rule over us’—even though the Lord your God is your king.
A.T. Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament (Nashville, TN: Broadman Press, 1933), .
Anything that contradicts the word of God is from the liar himself. Any time religious people have an attitude like the Sanhedrin, their identity is shown. We have One King, Jesus Christ! We never bow down to any man or woman only Jesus.

Jesus carries His Cross for Us! 18-24

Jesus leaves and starts the walk to Golgotha. He would be lifted just as He predicted next to two thieves. On His cross was the sign for the whole world to know, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of Jews. How ironic that they did not want Him to be their king but a gentile Roman soldier made the sign declaring who Christ was.
The soldiers took His clothes just as it was prophesied.
Psalm 22:18 CSB
18 They divided my garments among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing.
They mocked Christ and scoffed at Him. What they failed to realize, if He is not crucified we cannot be reconciled. The penalty of sin is death.
Romans 6:23 CSB
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We see the story of the criminals hanging there and the contrast of their spirit. One is yelling at Christ to come down of the Cross. This person was put there by Satan to persuade Christ to come down of the Cross before His time. Ever since the birth of Christ Satan has tried to manipulate Him in fulfill His divinity before it was His time. The other criminal had true contrition in his heart and asked forgiveness. This person is in heaven right now with all our loved ones. The only time it becomes late to repent and receive salvation is, when you die.

Death of Jesus Christ 28-30

Once Christ knew the time had come and all that needed to be fulfilled in Scripture had been accomplished, He asks for a drink. They gave Him sour wine to quench His thirst. The next verse Jesus conquerors sin by yielding up His Spirit to the Father.
