What Is Hope?

Romans 5:2–5 ESV
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
What is Hope
I’m going to build a foundation in understanding why we have the greatest hope.
Hebrews 11:1 CSB
1 Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.
Hope is a confident expectation or a solid assurance. In OT it was equivalent to trusting in God. Hope is directed towards the future.
Hebrews 11:1 CSB
1 Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.
Hope is in the middle, its the hinge of the gate.
It is the proof of what you
It brings into the reality of our faith
What is the Christian hope?

Hope is directed toward the future. Once we have received what we have hoped for, hope ceases (Rom 8:24). Thus, the ultimate focus of Christian hope, according to the NT, is the return of Jesus Christ (Tit 2:13), the resurrection from the dead (Acts 23:6), God’s ultimate salvation of his people, and the resultant eternal life in a restored creation (Rom 8:20–21; Gal 5:5; Eph 1:18; Tit 1:2; 3:7). At that point, we will live in eternal glory, centered in Jesus Christ himself, “the hope of glory” (Col 1:27; 1 Tim. 1:1).

Christian hope is strengthened by the Scriptures (Rom 15:4), by the work of Jesus (1 Pet. 1:3, 21), and by God’s present gift of the Spirit to believers (Rom 5:5). God wants us to wear hope around our heads as a helmet (1 Thess. 5:8) and to be ready at all times to share our hope with others (1 Pet. 3:15). By contrast, those who do not have God in their lives are without hope (Eph 2:12).

Jesus wants us to

Thus, the ultimate focus of Christian hope, according to the NT, is the return of Jesus Christ (Tit 2:13), the resurrection from the dead (Acts 23:6), God’s ultimate salvation of his people, and the resultant eternal life in a restored creation (Rom 8:20–21; Gal 5:5; Eph 1:18; Tit 1:2; 3:7). At that point, we will live in eternal glory, centered in Jesus Christ himself, “the hope of glory” (Col 1:27; 1 Tim. 1:1).

Return of Christ
Titus 2:13 CSB
13 while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Resurrection from the dead
Acts 23:6 ESV
6 Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial.”
Salvation , , , ;
Galatians 5:5 ESV
5 For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

Ephesians 1:18 CSB
18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints,
Romans 8:20–21 ESV
20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
Titus 3:7 ESV
7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
Christian Hope is strengthened
Scripture
Romans 15:4 ESV
4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Christ ;
1 Peter 1:3 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 1:21 ESV
21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Gift of the Spirit
Romans 8:16 ESV
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Romans 8:16
Romans 5:3–5 ESV
3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Romans 8:14–16 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Wear hope around our minds
Wear hope around our minds
1 Thessalonians 5:8 ESV
8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
Why is this important?
Romans 12:2 CSB
2 Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
I have heard and have repeated it to some that the mind is the devils playground.
Additionally, If you do not have the capabilities to control your mind, you lose your mind. We see this in the example of King Nebuchadnezzar.
He boasted in himself and when he did this he lost his mind for a period of time and it wasn’t until he cried out to God for forgiveness that his kingdom was restored.
“Our ability to live in hope-to remain focused on Christ during the storm-is largely dependent on what we feed our minds. This is how we are able to focus on the Savior rather than the storm.”
“The way you think creates your attitudes; the way you think shapes your emotions; the way you think governs your behavior; the way you think deeply influences your immune system and vulnerability to illness. Everything about you flows out of the way you think.”
“Over the long haul, good thinking-accurate perceptions, healthy emotions, wholesome desires, honorable intentions-cannot produce bad results; bad thinking cannot produce good results.”
“You must put your mind in a place that will lead you to think hope-producing thoughts. You need to expose your mind to those resources, books, tapes/cds, people and conversations that will incline you toward confidence in God.”
vi. Share our hope
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

Every Life Needs...

The Apostolic Church Chapter VI: The Christian Ministry; Its Authority and Support

Every noble life must have an uplift, an attraction, an inspiration, a hope, a vision, a goal of attraction and expectation.

Why is this the case?
This is what helps others who become hopeless to obtain a new hope. They see it in you. It is much like a race as Paul states.
Additionally, when one becomes more focused on the overwhelming nature of the storm than the overwhelming presence of God, we are in trouble. The Bible would call this losing heart. Many need to be encouraged to stay the course.
Philippians 3:14 ESV
14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Phillippians 3:14
1 Corinthians 9:23–25 ESV
23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
1 Corinthians
Michelangelo once wrote a discouraging sonnet, and the last sentence was I’m no painter. He was discouraged of the day-in and day-out work on the Sistine Chapel. Imagine if He had quit.
Imagine if you decide to quit. The marvelous beauty that could have been obtained in and through your life. The salvation that could have been birthed because of your salvation.
Our walk always has an affect on others if we believe it or not.
We are relational beings and Christ has commanded us to go into all the nations and preach this hope; the hope of the gospel.
Henri Matisse, a master painter, had arthritis and was asked why he continued to paint even though it caused him pain, he replied “The pain goes away; the beauty endures.”

This Is Why We Have The Hope!

Many people have been hurt in their past that it becomes easy to lose hope. If you ever tried hard in school and got a good grade and showed your parents and all they said was “you could have done better,” eventually you’ll give up trying to please them because you’ll feel like what is the point.
This leads to depression, loneliness, thoughts of suicide, eating alot, eradicate behavior, etc
Jesus
These are bad but some of them bring a sense of relief and it’s because we feel loved and accepted and these bring back hope, even though it be a false hope.
Ephesians 2:12 CSB
12 At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world.
Ephesians

It is FINISHED!!!

Plant in the garden of your memory, the tree of the holy Cross; it produces a very efficacious medicine against all the suggestions of the devil.

Romans 5:2–5 ESV
2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
The glory of who-God; why do we rejoice in our sufferings-God; who produces endurance-God; who produces character-God; who produces hope-God; why doesn’t hope put us to shame-because of God’s love.
Christ is the author of our faith, He is the alpha and the omega, and he is the beginning and the end. Christ is in control.
Romans 8:35–39 NASB95
35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 09:28-30
John 19:30 ESV
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
John 19:28–30 CSB
28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
John 1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known. 19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” 35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
