A Deeper Walk With The Holy Spirit
But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.

The Corinthian church was deeply divided. Two of the issues dividing it were a dispute over what kind of preacher should fill their pulpit, and which former minister had contributed the most to their church (cp.
For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other.

The church desperately needed to understand what preaching really was. Only if they understood what God intended preaching to be could they hope to solve their differences.
I realize One of the strong solutions to division in a church sound teaching and preaching.
Dear brothers and sisters, when I came to you, I did not come preaching God’s secret with fancy words or a show of human wisdom. I decided that while I was with you I would forget about everything except Jesus Christ and his death on the cross. So when I came to you, I was weak and fearful and trembling. My teaching and preaching were not with words of human wisdom that persuade people but with proof of the power that the Spirit gives. This was so that your faith would be in God’s power and not in human wisdom.
However, I speak a wisdom to those who are mature. But this wisdom is not from this world or from the rulers of this world, who are losing their power. I speak God’s secret wisdom, which he has kept hidden. Before the world began, God planned this wisdom for our glory. None of the rulers of this world understood it. If they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

As It Is Written
For since the beginning of the world
Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear,
Nor has the eye seen any God besides You,
Who acts for the one who waits for Him.
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
Jesus called the Holy Spirit the ‘Spirit of truth’
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
This means that the Spirit is absolutely free of error.
(a) The more we have of the Holy Spirit, the more we will recognize truth, the less we will have of error.
Two promises guarantee this.
If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.
Anyone who wants to do his will can test this teaching and know whether it’s from God or whether I’m making it up.
For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
If all these things are in you and are growing, they will help you to be useful and productive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

5 In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge,
6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness,
7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.
8 The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.
I am anticipating the Holy Spirit leading each of us to truth (; ).

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
This is what guarantees that the Holy Spirit is real
(a) This is what guarantees that the Spirit is total Christian.
(1) He only glorifies Jesus Christ.
(2) He hates anything that is cultic (false doctrine) or occultic (directly of the devil).
(b) The Holy Spirit not only touches our life-style, but also our thinking.
(1) We must demonstrate the love of Jesus.
(2) We must be spiritually sound in our minds.
I am anticipating the The Holy Spirit revealing the ‘deep things of God’
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
1. It begins with the ABC’s, the ‘elementary teachings’ ().
Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
So let us go on to grown-up teaching. Let us not go back over the beginning lessons we learned about Christ. We should not again start teaching about faith in God and about turning away from those acts that lead to death. We should not return to the teaching about baptisms, about laying on of hands, about the raising of the dead and eternal judgment.
(a) Repentance and faith, which assumes:
(1) Christ’s death on the cross.
(2) Faith in Christ’s blood.
(b) Elementary teaching:
(1) Baptism.
(2) Laying on of hands.
(c) Eschatological (end-time) things:
(1) Final resurrection.
(2) Final judgement.
2. It leads to the things of the Spirit.
But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
(a) Insight ().
(1) This refers to things beyond what we know.
(2) It includes what is knowable now, things revealed by the Spirit.
(b) God’s thoughts ().
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
(1) Only the Holy Spirit perfectly knows God’s thoughts.
(2) Our only link with his thoughts is the Holy Spirit.
(c) God’s thoughts are to be seen in two ways:
(1) Understanding what has been given to us ().
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
(2) Understanding what the Spirit continues to show us ().
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
3. What the Spirit will show us, as truth is concerned, will only be that already found in the Bible.
(a) When we get to heaven we may discover truths that are not explicit (as far as we know) in the Bible. But nothing that will be learned will contradict the Bible.
(b) In the meantime, all that will be revealed to us this side of glory will be found right in our Bibles.
(1) There may be truths we have not yet discovered. When we do it will be but a re-discovery of what was always in the Bible.
(c) There are no new truths, only fresh revelation of old truths!
I am anticipating becoming more Holy
A. Sanctification: process of being made holy.
1. The Greek word is hagiazo: to set apart; that which is treated with awe.
2. Latin is sanctus (holy) and facere (to make).
3. Sanctification and holiness are used interchangeably.
We are called with a ‘holy’ calling ().
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
1. The work of sanctification is the effect of being born again.
(a) You are not converted to remain the same ().
that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
(b) We are not saved ‘in’ our sins but ‘from’ our sins ().
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
2. The appearance of holiness varies in degrees and from person to person.
(a) You must consider the background of the believer
(1) Their education, culture, intellect.
(2) Their emotional and psychological make-up.
(3) Their pre-Christian exposure to the Bible and preaching.
Every command in the New Testament is a call for holiness.
1. That we will be moral ().
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;
2. That we will demonstrate a change of life ().
3. That we will receive a reward at the Judgement Seat of Christ (
Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
D. I am anticipating a deeper spirituality that flows from the Holy Spirit.
2. True spirituality flows from the Holy Spirit.
(a) Not from the human spirit, which is naturally opposed to holiness.
(b) Not from the demonic, which absolutely hates holiness.
3. What flows from the Holy Spirit will therefore be holy.
(a) This does not mean we are perfect.
(1) Sanctification is the process of being made holy.
(2) We will not be perfect until glorification ().
(b) What it means is that the bent of our lives will be in the direction of pleasing God which involves:
(1) Keeping his commands ().
(2) Wanting to please God in all we do ().
THE HOLY SPIRIT IS SENSITIVITY TO OTHERS’ NEEDS AND FEELINGS
If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?
A. The Holy Spirit cares for the underdog ()
Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?
(a) This is not done to get assurance of salvation.

(b) This is done to demonstrate faith to others.
2. The love of God in us will cause us to demonstrate pity ().
But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
(a) Tuning in to God’s love then is not limited to the absence of bitterness.
(b) It is showing that we care by what we do for others.
B. The Holy Spirit shows us how to care for the backslider with humility ().
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
1. The Holy Spirit has as a goal to restore the brother or sister who is ‘caught in a sin’.
(a) This task is assigned only to the ‘spiritually mature.’
(b) The spiritual person will therefore be all the above!
2. But reveals another dimension to the Holy Spirit: morality that is not self-righteous.
(a) This is a rare quality.
(1) Many who are moral are self-righteous.
(2) Those who are moral but not self-righteous are wanted.
(b) The Holy Spirit can be summed up at this point:
(1) The care to restore a fallen brother or sister.
(2) The approach that must be followed is one of meekness, knowing that what you sadly observe in another could happen to you
CONCLUSION
I am anticipating UCF -the church in a state of closeness to the Holy Spirit—being tuned in to him. It is a relationship where the Holy Spirit is not grieved; a living, present moment by moment relationship.
I am anticipating UCF and the church to be Spirit-filled, with the fruit of the Spirit evident in our lives.
The Holy Spirit is what Jesus was. He was without sin. But there was nothing self-righteous about him. Sinners felt welcome in his presence. Do they in ours?
There is only way forward for us: more of the Holy Spirit in our lives!
