1 John 2:15–17 CSB
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.

Love does not Lie! 15

Word love (agapao/agape) is to have a love for someone or something based on sincere appreciation and high regard. To have an unconditional love.
1 John 5:19 NASB95
We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
John is not telling his reader to hate the world that would mean we hate something God created. He is not telling believers to hate the world of humanity. That would contradict We should have compassion for those in the world but our love should look different than theirs.

John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:16 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
We should have compassion for those in the world but our love should look different than theirs.
John is talking about the “world order, realm of existence, or way of life.” These things are governed by Satan which Paul reminded the Ephesians and us we use to be a part of this world.
James 1:27 CSB
Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
Ephesians 2:2–3 NASB95
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
James 4:4 CSB
You adulterous people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.
You cannot have love for these things in the world and the love of God in you simultaneously! The Kingdom of the world and the kingdom of God are inherently incompatible. Jesus referred to those who were trying to live with one foot in the world and one after God.
John is talking about the “world order, realm of existence, or way of life.” These things are governed by Satan which Paul reminded the Ephesians and us we use to be a part of this world.
Revelation 3:15–16 NASB95
‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. ‘So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.
Ephesians 2:2–3 CSB
in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also.
Ephesians 2:2 CSB
in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient.
You cannot have love for these things in the world and the love of God in you simultaneously!
To love this world is to be an enemy with God, , “
God and this (sinful) world are so opposed, that both cannot be congenially loved at once.
1 John 5:19 NASB95
We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
The Kingdom of the world and the kingdom of God are inherently incompatible. Jesus referred to those who were trying to live with one foot in the world and one after God.
James 4:4 NASB95
You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Revelation 3:15–16 CSB
I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am going to vomit you out of my mouth.
WORLDLINESS IS NOT MUCH A MATTER OF ACTIVITY AS OF AN ATTITUDE!
To love this world is to be an enemy with God,
James 4:4 CSB
You adulterous people! Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? So whoever wants to be the friend of the world becomes the enemy of God.
WORLDLINESS IS NOT MUCH A MATTER OF ACTIVITY AS OF AN ATTITUDE!

Worldly Attributes: 16

Everything of the world are triad of sinful attitudes that arise from the worldly systems rather than from God. All/Everything: John is indicating that no aspect of the worldly system is excluded. Its values and attitudes even those we do not recognize as evil, stand in opposition to God. That statement is a game changer! It should lead us to examine all that we have sought that we have thought was good. Satan showed Eve the good side of the tree.

Genesis 3:6a NASB95
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
Genesis 3:6 CSB
The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
Lust: to strongly desire to have other’s belongings and/or to engage in an activity which is morally wrong.
That statement from Gary Derickson is a game changer! It should lead us to examine all that we have sought that we have thought was good.
Lust: to strongly desire to have others belongings and/or to engage in an activity which is morally wrong. Is the meaning here and how John is using it. Lust can have a positive or negative connotation: desire, crave, covet, or lust can be a positive thing. I desire, crave, lust, and covet a day when Muslims surrender to the Lord. But here John in using it in a negative way.
Lust of the Flesh: sensual appetite, the desire which resides in the flesh; not the desire in the sense of sensual.
Mark 4:19 NASB95
but the worries of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
Saul had “lust of the flesh”- his desire was not heavenly but earthly. He wanted the throne to stay in his lineage, therefore, he pursued and tried to kill David.
Lust of the eyes: sensual lust and everything that entices us, (riches, beauty, pomp, and fame).

David had “lust of the eyes”- his eyes saw the beauty of Bathsheba and caused him to lust after her.

2 Samuel 11:2 NASB95
Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.
Lust of the eyes: sensual lust and everything that entices us, (riches, beauty, pomp, and fame). David had “lust of the eyes”- his eyes saw the beauty of Bathsheba and caused him to lust after her.
Pride in one’s possession: anyone who puts confidence or self-worth in their possessions.
2 Samuel 11:2 NASB95
Now when evening came David arose from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance.
James 4:16 CSB
But as it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
Pride in one’s possession: anyone who puts confidence or self-worth in their possessions. Rich young ruler: wanted to enter heaven but would not give up his wealth. Why? Because, his worth and confidence was in it instead of in God (). Rich Fool: whose land was very productive and so he tore down his barns and built bigger ones to store all his grain and possessions. He then took it easy; eating, drinking, and enjoying his possessions. But God came that very night and took him away so others would enjoy all he had done ().
Rich young ruler: wanted to enter heaven but would not give up his wealth. Why? Because, his worth and confidence was in it instead of in God.
Luke 18:18–23 NASB95
A ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. “You know the commandments, ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ ” And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.” When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
Luke 12:16–20 NASB95
And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. “And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.” ’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’
Rich Fool: whose land was very productive and so he tore down his barns and built bigger ones to store all his grain and possessions. He then took it easy; eating, drinking, and enjoying his possessions. But God came that very night and took him away so others would enjoy all he had done.
These three sins encompass all temptations we are tempted with, to sin. Some scholars believe these three sins are the sins that Satan presented to Eve and Jesus.

Worldly lust cease: 17a

Another reason not to love the world or desire things of the world, its passing away! World is the darkness Paul talks about in
Romans 13:12 NASB95
The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

World/darkness< Jesus/Light [Passing away: cease to exist or disappearing- once it is gone it will never be again.]
Romans 13:12 CSB
The night is nearly over, and the day is near; so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.

John’s meaning for world is not the physical world, we know that will be destroyed and made new when Christ returns.
Passing away: cease to exist or disappearing- once it is gone it will never be again.
2 Peter 3:10 NASB95
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.
John’s meaning for world is not the physical world, we know that will be destroyed and made new when Christ returns.
John refers to the system of mankind made and is controlled by Satan. Those in the world will cease to have an opportunity/chance from moving out of eternal punishment to eternal bliss with God.

2 Peter 3:10 CSB
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief; on that day the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will burn and be dissolved, and the earth and the works on it will be disclosed.

Jude 12–15 NASB95
These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever. It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
Jude 12–15 CSB
These people are dangerous reefs at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn—fruitless, twice dead and uprooted. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever. It was about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied: “Look! The Lord comes with tens of thousands of his holy ones to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly concerning all the ungodly acts that they have done in an ungodly way, and concerning all the harsh things ungodly sinners have said against him.”

God’s will= Forever: 17b

“One who does the will of God”: Jesus spoke of the will of God and John heard it from Jesus. He recorded it for us all to know, ,
John 6:40 NASB95
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”
John 6:40 NASB95
“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.”

Mark 3:35 CSB
Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
Mark 3:35 NASB95
“For whoever does the will of God, he is My brother and sister and mother.”
It is the Father’s will for us to live a life detached from the world and attached to His Son. By doing so we are going to follow the Great Command and Commission, because we know it is the power of death and life.

Do not fret over what the world thinks of you. ; .
John 15:18–19 CSB
“If the world hates you, understand that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you.
Do not fret over what the world thinks of you. ,
John 17:14 CSB
I have given them your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
John 17:14 NASB95
