I. The Messenger

(Slide) In the Gospel of John the limited miracles listed (7 of them) are there to prove that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of God.
In this story we will see the Jesus goes beyond life and touches on death and the afterlife, something that only God can do. Each of the miracles help grow faith.
(Slide) Location: Believed in Perea region; town of Bethabara - this is about 20 miles from Bethany - this is a 1-2 day walk - so we need to take that into account when we look at the story.
(Slide) In looking at (vv.1-3) who are the players, participants? What can you tell about them? - Lazarus, Mary and Martha (v.1); Jesus (v.3). - expand on we want to make Jesus the focus not Lazarus.
The incident on the foot anointing is Jn12:3 just so you know.
(Slide) What information do you pick out in (v.3)? - One Jesus loves. This is an established relationship with them and the Lord loves Lazarus and it was known.
(Slide) What was Jesus response to the messenger (v.4)? - will not end in death; Don’t miss the fact that it will end in the glory of God, and the Son of God may be glorified.
(v.5) there is where we know that Jesus loved, Martha, her sister and Lazarus.
(Transistion) Now the messanger is on the way back to the family with good news and Jesus now has a message for the disciples.

II. The Message

God’s love for His own does not insulate them from problems. God's love for them, just like His love for us is not a pampering love, it is a perfecting love. Our love for Him is being perfected by our faith in Him. This is an exercise in faith building they just have not realized it yet.
(Slide) What did Jesus do when He heard Lazarus was sick (v.6)? -keep this in mind we will need the information to draw a timeline a little later.
(SLide) In (v.8) the disciples are wondering why return to area where they want to kill Jesus (see (Slide) and )
John 8:59 NASB95
Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
(Slide) Now
John 10:31 NASB95
The Jews picked up stones again to stone Him.
Now looking at (vv.7-10) we don’t know the reason why Jesus wants to return to the Judea (which is where Jerusalem and Bethany are located).
(Slide) Look at Jesus message (vv.9-10)
(Slide) 12 hours a day will not stumble
Walks at night will stumble for there is no light
(Slide) walks at night will stumble
Jesus was bringing to light there is limited time (daylight) to accomplish the task and we need to make it count! -

III. The Means

(Slide) Now Jesus comes back to the issue at hand, Lazarus. But what was the end to be (look back at v.4) - to glorify God and the Son of man maybe glorified.
(Slide) What was the misunderstanding (vv.11-12)?
(Slide) What was the reality (vv.13-14)?
(Slide) What was the intended result (v.15)(
Jesus had said back in (v.4) that the sickness would not end in death, but now (v.14) He says he is dead.
Things do not need to make sense all the time. The disciples were being taught here about faith and about bringing glory to God. A lesson they were going to need when HE was gone, no matter what it looks like, bring glory to God and the Son of man. Just was we need to do too!
