Introduction
In Christianity we believe that Jesus Christ, who is fully man and fully God at the same time, died on a cross and then rose from the dead.
So in a sense we believe God died.
And we believe that is the reason we can be saved.
The question we are going to answer today is this.
How does God’s death equal man’s life?
I.
The purpose of the new covenant (V 15a)
Christ has inaugurated a new covenant between God and man.
In other words, the terms that govern God’s relationship with man have changed from the terms laid out in the OT.
The purpose for this new covenant is that God’s people might receive the eternal inheritance.
Matt 19:29
How would you describe a mediator?
Why is Christ called one?
How does the idea of Jesus being the perfect mediator impact your understanding of your need for Christ?
II.
The problem for the new covenant (Vv 15b-22)
Problem - transgressions committed under first covenant.
Redemption needed
Redemption needed
Like a will new covenant not valid until death
Not even 1st covenant was enacted without death.
Why?
Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
(V 22b)
Wages of sin is death.
aa
Read verse 22.
Why is the shedding of blood necessary for forgiveness to take place?
What are the implications of God forgiving apart from that?
III.
The provision in the new covenant (Vv 23-26)
Sacrifices under old covenant were only copies so they were only able to purify copies.
But the new covenant requires the real thing.
In heaven - Verse 24
Verse 25
His own blood
Once for all
put away sin
Why is Christ’s death the only death that could establish the new covenant?
Why were the sacrifices under the old covenant insufficient?
IV.
The promise of the new covenant (Vv 27-28)
Just as people only die once, so Christ only died once.
Having already put away sin He will not return to deal with sin but to consummate our salvation.
“eagerly waiting for Him”
What
Read verse 28.
What might “eagerly waiting for him” mean?
Describe the life of someone who is eagerly waiting for Christ.
Describe the life of someone who isn’t eagerly waiting for him.
Big Idea: By His death Christ has put away sin that believers may receive eternal life.
Implications
There is no burden to be good enough to earn God’s favor.
You can be saved if you turn from your sin and trust Christ.
How do these verses offer hope?
Which parts encourage you most?
What does this passage have to say to people who believe they will get to heaven simply by being a good person?
