Key words:
To know
To Glean: 12 times!

19 “When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

Ruth is a sojourner, fatherless, and widow! She’s all three!
April: Barley
May: Wheat
vs. 3: “Her chance chanced upon...”
Vs.5: “Who does that woman belong to?” Not, “Who’s that?”
Vs. 10: “You’ve ‘noticed’ one usually ‘unnoticed’.”
Vs. 19: “Blessed be the man who took notice...”
Kinsmen-Redeemer or Guardian-Redeemer: ZNIVSB: “It desoigntates a group of close relatives responsible for getting family members out of difficulties. It also descriebs GOd as rescuer of Israel from Egyption slavery (: I will redeem; : Have redeeemed and Babylonian exile (,: have redeemed and Redeemer… Both human and divine examples of kindness and protection anticipate the work of Christ, the Redeemer par excellence.”
Themes:
Yada: Boaz is known, Ruth is unkonwn who comes to those she did not know. Boaz ‘notices’...
NIBC:
Section is wrapped around th
Meyudda, and moda (relative): Root meaning is ‘to know’
Boaz: Pillar in the community
vs. 2: Ruth the Moabite: redundant reminder of who she is as an outsider.
vs. 2: Gleaners: picking up left over grain. Sweat potato, gleaning...
Vs. 3: “Her happening happened”: It’s as if the author goes out of his way to not mention that God’s behind all this!
vs. 8: Stick with the young women= cling!
vs. 12: May the Lord rewards= Wages: give you your wages for all the work you’ve done!
Prayer he prays, he eventually answers himself! Self fulfilled prophecy??
vs. 13: “I have found favor in your eyes...” Could refer to him speaking to her as encouragement (bibilcal examples: (; ), and physical attraction (; ; )
Also, response= Thanks!
vs. 15: Glean among the barley (rather than pick up the trashy leftovers)
vs. 15: Also gives the good stuff away in the barley bundles:
17: 30 lbs of barley: Enough to eat for weeks!
Noami: “The Lord has dealt bitterly to me.”
vs.20: Kindness could refer to both God and Boaz, which is probably done on purpose.
Assumptions of their culture:
Agrarian culture.
No value in ability to produce sons to carry on the family name.
Women are denied ‘access to legal and financial structures of the community’ without a father, husband, or son.
Only socially acceptable job is to beg and to glean.
Could you imagine your mom getting excited that the one who may have a crush on your daughter in a relative!? Like, a cousin? Pretty sure we were told to stay away...
Vs. 21: Ruth quotes Boaz incorrectly: “cling to young men...” Naomi corrects her: Stick with his girls.

Sermon:

Most of chapter 2 is dialogue, and it’s a tough thing to read the tone!
Apologize: Fine… I’m sorry!
Like, is Ruth running out screaming to Naomi, “FINE! Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”
A lot happening between the lines!
What do we get out of this dialogues?
1. Ethnic and Social Qualifiers
Ruth always has a qualifier lest we forget that she’s a foreigner or a widower.

- Ruth always has a qualifier lest we forget that she’s a foreigner or a widower.
2. Hesed: Kindness
Kindness
Boaz’s reason to bless:
Because Ruth gave up everything to follow Naomi
Because God has covered
3. God’s Redemption within the Mess
Boaz’s reason to bless
Movement from bitterness to hope/joy
Just so happens...
Pentecost: What did it point to?
