Introduction

There are a number of fish on my bucket list that I would like to catch.

A Shark

A Goliath Grouper

An Alligator Gar

Gar Fish

Here is a picture of a Gar.

There is another Gar I want to tell you about.

When you learn the Greek language in seminary one of the first words you learn is the word gar.

Here is your quick lesson in greek.

Any time you see the word γὰρ - it goes to the front of the sentence and is the word “for”

Today we are going to look at four - for’s

So Jesus is getting ready to defend who is and answer the accusation of blasphemy.

Starting with

John 5:19

For whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

This is natural right

Most father’s teach us things and we do whatever it is like our father’s did - especially if it is a family business

Maybe it is the procedure for milking cows

Maybe it is the procedure for cleaning guns

Maybe it is the procedure for changing oil

Father’s teach us what to do - and we learn from them

Jesus said, “whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

We follow what our Father’s teach us - Jesus follows His Father.

Let’s look at the next for -

John 5:20

#2 For

#2 - For

For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; And the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.

I love this - so that you will marvel.

When was the last time you marveled over Jesus’ work?

When was the last time you marveled over the work of Jesus in someone’s life?

They just watched a man who was lame for 38 years walk - and Jesus says - Just wait, the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works that these, so that you will marvel.

And the Father will show Him greater works that these, so that you will marvel.

John 5:21

The Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

This one is important - especially to the Jews

2 Kings 5:7

According to Rabbi Johanan - God has three keys in his hands that He has not entrusted to His representatives.

The Key of rain.

The Key of the womb.

The Key of the resurrection of the dead.

Look at again

John 5:22

Jesus is saying that the Father can raise the dead and give them life, so to can the Son.

And we saw that with the lame man.

Out of all the sick people waiting at the pool to be healed, Jesus picks out a lame man and gives him new life.

#4 - Gar

Not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son

This is quite a statement - The Father does not judge, but all judgment is given to the Son

It leads us to the question of Why?

Why?

John 5:23

These four reasons - all begin with the word “for” is so that all honor will be given to the Son.

By honoring the Son you honor the Father.

John 5:24

Conclusion

All of us have an appointment with death.

It’s been said, for those who believe in Jesus this life on earth is as close to hell as we will ever experience, but for the believer, this life on earth is the only heaven they will experience.

This has been a tough year.

We have lost a number of friends and family, but for those who believed they have passed out of death into life.

Eternal life.

Some of us here may need that eternal life.

Some of us here need to make that decision to believe in the God who sent Jesus.

If we believe we too have passed out of death and into life.

What a great life it is.

There is no reason to fear physical death because we are passing from this life to eternal life.

But if we don’t believe - then we are missing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

“We not only will have eternal life, but we already have it, and we not only will not come into the judgment of condemnation, but have already passed through judgment and are safe on the other side.

Jesus has become that judgment for us.

When we are united to him by faith, his death becomes our death, and his crucifixion our crucifixion, and his curse on the cross our curse on the cross, and his resurrection our resurrection.

We have already “passed from death to life”!

This is glorious news beyond all words.

Exult in this.

Know this about yourself as a believer.

Be made radically courageous by this.”
