Summer At Connect Church 2017_pt: Refreshing

John 7:37–38 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
Water is always the metaphor for the Spirit
And, here, Scripture clearly explains that metaphor
"but this He spoke concerning the Spirit”
“River” denotes the nature of the Spirit in our life!
There is a tangible life-flow!
There is an example of this tangible life-flow in the story about the woman with the issue of blood ()…
Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction….”
Mark 5:30 NKJV
And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

Water of Life

Water is life. We see this when we build wells in communities lacking access to clean drinking water.
Further, the water He provides is an even greater source of life.
o Further, the water He provides is an even greater source of life.
Let’s look at a few rivers mentioned in Scripture…
o Let’s look at a few rivers mentioned in Scripture…

Flowing from the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 2:10 NIV
A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters.

Flowing from the rock in the wilderness.

Numbers 20:11 NIV
Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

Flowing from Ezekiel’s temple.

Ezekiel 47:9 NIV
Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.

Flowing from the throne of God.

Revelation 22:1 NIV
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
Revelation 22:1

Empowered with living water

John 7:37–38 NIV
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
John 7:38 NASB95
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”

Thirst for something more!

John 7:37 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
Taste and see!
You have to be thirsty
Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well…
John 7
Matthew 5:6 NIV
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Matth
John 4:13–14 NIV
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
[PAYOFF] - You have to be more thirsty for Christ than for the things of this world!

Come to Him!

John 7:37 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
Matthew 7:7–8 NIV
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
He is inviting you, but you have to come!
Some of us are serving, but we aren’t coming…
Some of us are praying, but we aren’t coming…
M
Some of us are giving, be we aren’t coming…
[PAYOFF] - We will NEVER drink, if we do not come to Him!

Drink!

John 7:37 NKJV
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.
What is drinking? What does he mean here? = WORSHIP.
John
Ephesians 5:18–20 NIV
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians

Believe!

John 7:38 NKJV
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
If we are going to seek, come, and drink, then we’ve got to believe He’s the source of life…. He’s this river!
John 7:
The River of Life flows out of...
The Garden = place of relationship.
You need a relationship with Christ!
The Rock = foundation of Christ.
You need truth - the Word - applied to your life!
The Temple = God’s indwelling presence.
You need to place of worship in your life!
The Throne = His established authority.
You need Him FIRST in your life!

Take Away

Back to this RIVER EXPERIENCE we read about...
Mark 5:33–34 NIV
Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

Faith draws from the river!
