Chapter 21

Who is Ahimelech

Ahimelech the priest The great-grandson of Eli.

Ahimelech the priest The great-grandson of Eli.

Do you remember the curse on Eli’s family because of how his sons dishonered God while performing their priestly roles?
1 Samuel 2:31–34 NLT
The time is coming when I will put an end to your family, so it will no longer serve as my priests. All the members of your family will die before their time. None will reach old age. You will watch with envy as I pour out prosperity on the people of Israel. But no members of your family will ever live out their days. The few not cut off from serving at my altar will survive, but only so their eyes can go blind and their hearts break, and their children will die a violent death. And to prove that what I have said will come true, I will cause your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, to die on the same day!
1 Sam 2:31-
What lies does David tell in this chapter
He is on urgent, private business FOR the king.
He is insane - drooling down his beard.
David Goes to Gath. Do you remember anything about Gath.

GATH (גת, gt; “winepress”). One of the five Philistine city-states during the Iron Age. Located in northeast Philistia. Gath was the home of Goliath, the Philistine giant killed by the young David in 1 Sam 17. David twice took refuge in Gath while fleeing from Saul (1 Sam 21:10–15; 27:2–7). During David’s reign, Gath was taken by Israel, but it is mentioned only sporadically in the biblical record. The site appears to have been destroyed by king Hazael of Aram (2 Kgs 12:18). Although it was occupied subsequently, it never returned to its former status.

David is now carrying Goliath’s sword. Do you think anyone in Gath would notice that?

Chapter 22

David escapes to a cave in Adullam. Then vs 2 says “others began coming.” Describe the type of people that gathered around David.
brothers and other relatives (vs 1)
men who were in trouble / debt (vs 2)
discontented men (vs 2)
400 men in all
David finds a safe place for his parents (vs 3)
What do you think of Doeg’s action (i.e. tellinwg Saul about Ahimelech helping David)?
What was Doeg’s motive for telling Saul?
Saul wants the preists dead
Why? (Jealousy seems to be a theme from previous chapters)
Why do Saul’s men refuse to kill the priests
Why does Doeg kill the priests
What does this have to do with the prophecy against Eli and his family?
What is David’s responsibility in all of this?

Chapter 23

Verses 1-12

David protects the Israelite town of Keilah
How does David decide what to do in this situation?
How many times does he ask God questions in these verses? (3 times)
God tells David the the town of Keilah will betray him. Have you ever felt betrayed after going out of your way to help someone?
How does David respond? - (moves on)

Verses 13-29

A cat and mouse game between David and Saul.
Why is David always a step ahead of Saul?
In our safe place as the reader, we may miss the levels of fear that must be present for David and his followers.
Can you identify a fearful time in your life?
From the safe place of looking back, can you see God’s hand at work in your situation?
If God has already determined that David is going to be king of Israel...
Why should David have to run from Saul?
Why should we have to endure hardships?
