Notes & Transcripts | Sermon Questions
I have been to Church on Mother’s day and Father’s day most of my life. And the difference in how those sermons are preached is worth noting.
Mother’s day: We celebrate motherhood, we identify the oldest, the ones with the most kids, the newest mother.....The sermon honors all moms....
Father’s day: We thank the dads, then talk about God as being the Father and then how much we as earthly dads have to live up to, and how we need to get it in gear. The sermon sounds more like a halftime speech to a trailing team than a sermon.
Well, now I’m preaching the sermon........and that’s exactly how its going to go…jk
Matthew 7:7–11 NASB95
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 “For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 “Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? 10 “Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!
Matthew 7:11-
Our righteousness is like fifthly rags
I was deployed to Germany for a year in my mid 20’s. With two small kids at home, I would deal with my relationships back home by avoidance and alcohol.
I got home and my kids didn’t know me and my wife resented me.
If I knew then, what I know now....
I have shared that when my parents divorced, my father and I became distant. He had a new wife, a new life, we moved away and our relationship suffered.
My father gave me a love for people. He treated people kindly. From the Cuban guy at the coffee shop to the kids he coached.
That started a pattern in my life that I never forgot. I don’t think I am better than anyone. I don’t care if you are a bank president or pilled out prostitute. I will treat you the same.
Matthew
Matthew 7:12 NASB95
12 “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
A loaf or a stone?
A fish or a snake?
A son will learn how to treat his future wife from how you treat their mother.
A daughter will lean how they should be treated as a wife by how you treat their mother.
Joshua 24:15 NASB95
15 “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:14–15 NASB95
14 “Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Quality vs Quantity.
Ot 13 times
Jesus called God his father 150 times
Jesus referred to God as our father 30 times.
Matthew 7:11 NASB95
11 “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!
Matthew
Sometimes we get better than what we ask for
Sometimes the answer is “NO.”
