Freedom from sin and death is found in Christ alone. This freedom calls for our obedience to him.

Notes & Transcripts
Talk about 4th of July memories
Talk about thankfulness for founding fathers, soldiers, and freedom. Memories as a child from 4th of July.
When we think of the word freedom, many thoughts may enter our minds.
As a child it may be difficult to understand.
A childhood game where you experience bondage and freedom is freeze tag.
Just like in freeze tag, when you are frozen, you are waiting on someone to come and save you, in reality everyone of us are in bondage, whether or not we realize it.
As a teenager we may say freedom is getting driver’s license, later curfew, or moving out.
As an adult we think about religious freedom, slavery, freedom from addiction, freedom from debt
No matter what type of freedom we are thinking about , it also carries the connotation of bondage. Being bound by the chains of something.

In our passage today, we
I’m not simply talking about bondage to the physical world (debt, addictions, etc.) but instead about spiritual bondage.
In the Bible, people sometimes had a hard time realizing their spiritual bondage. Because Israel had a history of becoming captives time and again, they would always look forward to physical freedom. In fact, this is what caused many of them to miss the Messiah. They were looking for someone to deliver them from their physical oppression. Instead, Jesus came to do much more.
You could be enslaved by something, even without realizing it, which could have eternal implications.

This is why so many Christians, who have experienced freedom in Christ, still feel like they are in bondage.
Instead of walking away from our sin, we return to it and put the chains back on.
Instead of realizing that freedom comes from Christ and we experience that freedom when we are obedient to him we return to our lives of sin.
Do you feel bound by sin? Jesus can set you free
Have you been searching for freedom in something else?
Have you experienced that freedom but have gone back to your old ways?
