“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
• He has emotions, such as love and joy (see ; ).
• He comforts (see ).
Part 4 - The person of the Holy Spirit and His impact on and through us.
• He teaches (see ).
Part 5 - The voice of the Holy Spirit.
• He can be made to feel sorrow (see ).
• He can be insulted (see ).
• He can be resisted (see ).
He can be lied to (see ).
The Holy Spirit has been involved from the beginning.
It is through the Holy Spirit that Jesus did all what he did. Scripture tells us that Jesus had the Holy Spirit without measure. ()
It is the Holy Spirit that is here on earth, not Jesus.
The Goal of much I have tried to preach to you about the Holy Spirit is to bring a realization or understanding that He is vital to you. How is the Holy Spirit vital to you? From the beginning. He as been drawing you to the Father. The Holy Spirit made you a new creation. And some of what we are going to touch on this morning is that Holy Spirit is not only a encourager. Remember we talked about Him being an Advocate, Counselor.
He convicts men of sin; graciously aids them in repentance and faith; regenerates, comforts, and sanctifies believers; bears witness to their acceptance with God and adoption as God's children; and dwells in them as the principle of a new and divine life.
So here is a little Why? for the What?
(NLT)
7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
But He did not just come to encourage you but employ you! He gives us the power to fulfill the mission that Christ’s left for us. Part of the evidence of the ongoing baptism of the Holy Sprit in your life is fulfilling your heavenly employment.
He gives us the power to fulfill the mission that Christ’s left for us. Part of the evidence of the ongoing baptism of the Holy Sprit in your life is fulfilling your heavenly employment.
(NLT)
Matt 22:37-
15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.
(NLT)
Just like you can’t know the Father without the Holy Spirit. Just like you can be a new creation without the Holy Spirit. Just like you can’t know what it is to bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit without the Holy Spirit. You can’t fulfill your mission without the Holy Spirit.
26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Growth stops with many because they don’t fully allow the Holy Spirit to employ them fully.
(NLT)
Number one is the Holy Spirit not only encourages, but employs. Then number 2...
“There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’
Acts 2:4 ESV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(NLT)
14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
The Holy Spirit is not some weirdness.
The Holy Spirit is not a ghost like you would picture a poltergeist.
The Holy Spirit is not some new age thing.
He was in the beginning in and He is at the speaking in Revelation.
He is in-between involved in drawing you to God.
Making you new creation.
Helping, counseling, encouraging you.
Giving you the power you need to fulfill a Kingdom mission.
Matthew, Mark, Luke are the Synoptic Gospels meaning similar Gospels. Then there is John. John is not a Synoptic Gospel. Matt, Mark, Luke record the birth of Jesus then move immediately move the beheading of John the Baptist and cover the 3rd year of the ministry of Jesus. The book of John written by John the disciple, apostle, and revelator wrote about the fist two years of the ministry of Jesus. John focuses on encounters and miracles in that time frame. But you know what is in all four - The water baptism of Jesus and the events around it.
The Holy Spirit will speak!
2. The Holy Spirit uses your conscience!
*Fellowship - the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings.
*Partnership - the scripture in states, “it seemed good to us and the Holy Spirit”
1 Corinthians 12:13 ESV
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

There is something else in all four of the Gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke the synoptic Gospels, and John’s Gospel.
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

John
We are seeing two distinct works in .
Let’s compare:
*Intimacy - (NLT) tell us, “But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”
John 20:22 ESV
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
John 20:19 ESV
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
John 20:20 ESV
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
John 20:

Acts 1:4–5 ESV
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:4 ESV
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
CHECK WHAT TIME IT IS HERE!!!!
Acts 1:4–5 ESV
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
If you remember in the book of Matthew, John the Baptist said…
Everyone knows when the Holy Spirit shows u
Every one knows when the Holy Spirit shows up.
“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.”
It has always been God’s plan to fill us with His Spirit!
“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.
Jesus told those who believed not to do anything…anywhere until they received the Promise from the Father. Just as in water baptism the word baptism is baptizo which means to immerse, submerge, to make overwhelmed.
There is an immersion of the Holy Spirit that at this point the disciples didn’t have yet. More should have been baptized in the Holy Spirit than were on that day.
(NLT)
(NLT)
6 After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.
Some reasons that people are not Baptized in the Holy Spirit:
- Impatience
(NLT)
- doubt
- unbelief
- harbored sin
- willful rebellion
(NLT)
But what we know is that 120 were left in that upper room.
(NLT)
2 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is something you see and hear.
(NLT)
32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. 33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.
(NLT)
(NLT)
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”
Samaria:
They were saved.
(NLT)
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and John there. 15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
They were filled.
(NLT)
17 Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this power. 19 “Let me have this power, too,” he exclaimed, “so that when I lay my hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit!”
Even though this one instance does not say they spoke in tongues, it does tell us two things. Something happened! “Simon saw” vs. 16 He offered them money because he wanted this power that he just saw. The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them. they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. But something distinct happened.
The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them. they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
Something happened! “Simon saw” vs. 16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them. they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
I think one of the most infamous questions in the bible is asked by Paul:
(NLT)
2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them.
They had had John’s baptism, which meant they had repented then in vs 5…
They had had John’s baptism, which meant they had repented then in vs 5…
5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.
As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.
As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied.
There was a manifestation that could be seen and heard. The pattern from here on is that of other tongues, or unknown tongues.
Even as Peter was saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message. 45 The Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles, too. 46 For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God.
This is the only time that we see salvation and Baptism of the Holy Spirit happen at the same time.
34 Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.
Then why would Peter in preached…this is that!
Acts 2:29 ESV
“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
Paul at Ephesus…have you received since you believed!
Samaria…Philip preaches a revival - Peter and John come in to tag team and something visibly happens to the new believers.
Cornelius House…Gentiles!
Myth…
Pastor…what about the scripture tongues will cease. May you are not one that believes that the Holy Spirit was just for the apostles, but just for the 1st century church. They just needed the Holy Spirit like that when the church was starting. If they needed the power of the Holy Spirit then, we need the Power of the Holy Spirit now.
(NLT)
(NLT)
8 Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! 9 Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! 10 But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless.
The purpose of the Baptism and Tongues The different uses. There is a public use and a private use. When there will be interpretation and when there will not.
(Preview for next week)
(ESV)
The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord,
    searching all his innermost parts.
Just in case your are here and your saying it is not for me…It is for you.
remember we read…
(NLT)
32 “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. 33 Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.
The promise is for everyone.
It also tells us in…
Are we all apostles? Are we all prophets? Are we all teachers? Do we all have the power to do miracles? 30 Do we all have the gift of healing? Do we all have the ability to speak in unknown languages? Do we all have the ability to interpret unknown languages? Of course not!
No matter how hard it may seem to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, God never commands anything he doesn’t really intend to be accomplished.
Sometimes some people find difficulty in being baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
Why?
Some have been taught as we covered this morning. It was just for the apostles…wrong. Some have been taught is was only for the 1st century church…wrong. Some have been taught is was of the devil…really wrong.
I know God wants to feel me but for some reason he hasn't seen fit to film yet. When God gets ready, I'm sure he will.
I'm not sure that being filled with the spirit is for me. It's not for everybody you know.
No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
17
‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Guess I'm not just ready when I get good enough maybe God will fill me.
I tried so many times but nothing happened.
Maybe I don't have enough patience to wait as I should.
I'm afraid I might get in the flesh for the devil not deceive me to saying something false.
I guess I don't have enough faith.
Satan wants to distract you!
I am not an emotional person!
So how do I get filled…
Worship Expect to speak in tongues. Leave your English or your native language. Receive the Holy Spirit Baptism. If you hear strange, unknown syllables coming to your mind, speak them. If it is only one syllable, speak it! If you sense the rising up of a fountain within you…speak it. Speak even if it doesn’t sound like a language to you. You are in control of the flow of the Spirit in your life. Pray! Pray! Pray!
