9 As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
tax collectors = sinners
May have been a Levite
Implied deeper Jewish knowledge
Jesus called him to follow
App: Call people of all types to follow Jesus
Criminals, Drug addicts, Corporate executilves, polititions, lawyers, etc.
10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Jesus ate with Sinners many times in His ministry
Pharisees addressed disciples rather than Jesus Himself
Perhaps they were trying to cast doubt amoung the disciples or avoid one of Jesus answers
“Go and learn what this means” is a rabbi’s saying that the disciple has the wrong answer
Quote from Hosea 6:6
Mercy = “Covenant love” which is more important that physical sacrifices
“Its the thought that counts”
Basically it means that “they should be more sympathetic to outcasts like these “sinners” and less concerned about “cerimonial purity”
App: Seek out those who know that they have a need.
14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”
Work Through Text:
Disciples of John (Others add and Pharisees)
Fasting was part of the Pharisees standard of righteousness
Bridegroom = God in OT
In this passage, Christ puts himself in that place
App: There are at least two manifestations of Judaism that can be understood in these points.
We will call them Pharisaic Judaism, and True Judaism
One, an empty religion
One, a faith that leads to life
Easy to see Pharisaic
Also easy to see true
10 And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance 11 and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean.” 15 And the voice came to him again a second time, “What God has made clean, do not call common.” 16 This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven.
28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. 29 So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me.”
Yet, notice that this is not a new thing. The wine is till wine, the garment is still a garment
The object never changes, just the form
Jesus did not start a new religion but fulfilled the will and design of the one true God.
Rejoice that a day is coming when we will be with Jesus agian
Prepare for His coming
