2 Peter 1:1–11 ESV
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

So Far…

What is Faith?
Definition:
Reliance upon and trust in God
The moral conviction of the truthfulness of God
Faith is the substance of all things hoped for and the Evidence of the things not seen.
Faith is the glue that holds it all together.
we know that without faith it is impossible to please God
REMEMBER Faith produces action.
our faith should produce good works. Good works are not counted as faith.
What is Virtue?
Definition:
“Moral Goodness” or Moral Excellence
Morality does not require Faith
Faith in Christ will produce moral living
We are to be a morally excellent people.
What is Knowledge?
Definition:
acts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject
The pursuit of Knowledge apart form God is flawed
Human knowledge opposed to God’s Knowledge is foolishness, and therefore not knowledge but foolishness
Knowledge is power, with great power comes great responsibility.
What is Self-Control?
Definition:
Restraint excersided over one’s own impulse, emotions or desires
Proverbs 25:28, A man without Self-control is like a city broken into and left with out walls.
ITS A BIG DEAL
so big it’s a qualification for leadership.
it’s learned over time, trials, and patience.
partnered with the holy spirt
not spiritual osmosis
Building Block
2 Peter 1:4–6 ESV
by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
2 Peter 1:5–6 ESV
For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness,
2 Peter 1:5-
These are life steps for Godly living Building blocks.
The foundation and start is Faith
Upon faith is virtue. Moral living
Knowledge in Christ grows the believer.
With knowledge we must exercise self-control
And now with self control we must add steadfastness.
What good is steadfastness without self control, what good is self control without knowing what you are being in self control for in, moral living or excellence is nothing without faith.

Steadfastness

What do You think of when you hear Steadfastness?
Definition:
Literally means endurance, perseverance, patience.
it is more than just endurance.
Continue In the Faith
Steadfastness is really the perfect addition to self control.
Steadfastness is really the perfect addition to self control.
What good would any knowledge and self control be if it only lasted for a day?
We must continue and endure until the end.
He is not talking about steadfastness as to some sort of diet, it is specific to the precursors.
Paul in his second letter to Timothy wrote some powerful words on this topic.
He wrote this letter while in prison awaiting execution.
2 Timothy 4:1–7 ESV
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
b. You see how this goes together with having self-control
i. Paul is giving his charge to Timothy. He wants him to continue in the faith.
Preach the word. Be ready in season and out. Reprove rebuke and exhort with complete patience and teaching.
to do those things requires patience and teaching.
many times when preaching, reproving, it takes patience to do it while teaching.
2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
We are to do these things WITH patience and teaching.
2. But why are we to do it?
2 tim 4:3-
2 Timothy 4:3 ESV
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
2 Timothy 4:3–4 ESV
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Lacking self control and endurance people will fall away. They have ears that will lead them away from the knowledge they have in Christ.
Their Steadfastness and self-control will be hindered
then their knowledge of the confidence they have in Christ will be blinded by their own desires
corrupting their virtues
and eventually their faith.
We are to preach and rebuke and exhort because these things will creep into the church.
And we are to do it with Patience and teaching. We reprove rebuke and exhort because it teaches individuals as well as the body.
And it must be done with patience, or it will lead to burn out frustration and eventually bitterness and anger at the people you are trying to help.
Too many times have I seen people fall away because of this down spiral of events. Please, I beg you, don’t be a statistic. and individual of who once was....
3. Our Charge
We are to reprove rebuke exhort with patience and teaching, But also
2 Timothy 4:5 ESV
As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
2 tim
Sober-minded = Self Controlled
Endure suffering = Stead fast
do the work of the evangelist, fill your ministry. = Share your knowledge. your responsibility.
with great power comes great responsibility.
4. Paul’s steadfastness.
2 Timothy 4:6–7 ESV
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
2 tim 4:
2 Timothy 4:6–8 ESV
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
2 tim 4:
He had the endurance, patience.
As a runner in an endurance race we must also be patient and enduring in our walk and do it with Godliness.

Godliness

What Is godliness, What does it mean to be a godly person?
Definition:
Reverence for God and a life of holiness in the world.
A devotion to God that produces a life that is pleasing to him.
Reverence for God and a life of holiness in the world.
A godward attitude of reverence and respect, and doing what is pleasing unto God
Chamblin, J. K. (1996). Godly, Godliness. In Evangelical dictionary of biblical theology (electronic ed., p. 300). Grand Rapids: Baker Book House.
What does it look like?
One may consider these people:
A hard worker in the church
a good parent
a person who speaks well on behalf of christ, such as a pastor, or a speaker
But these are outward appearances, and they can be produced outwardly. If a person is not godly inwardly it is pointless.
When looking at some of Paul’s writings, when he wants to describe the essence of the Christian into one short thought he focuses on godliness.
Titus 2:11–13 ESV
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
As later described in 2 Peter 3, He describes this
2 Peter 3:10 ESV
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
2 Peter 3:10–12 ESV
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
Peter uses this example to instill godly living.
Godliness is not optional.
Deciding to live godly can get you titles such as
Bible thumper
Jesus freak
one of those people
super christian
But it is not really Optional. as seen in 2 Peter, , and a vast other places throughout the Bible
Everything up to this point has been been building blocks for godly living
2 Peter 1:3 ESV
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
2 Peter 1:3 ESV
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,
he has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness
We have the ability to live godly lives. and if you ask How? review the previous steps....
we don’t need some sort of special prayer cloth or crazy talent. its something all christians have through christ.
So what is Godly ness then?
Devotion and reverence toward God for a life lived pleasing to Him.

Devotion to God.

Its not just an activity
Just like most of the previous steps, Godliness is an excursus that focuses on God.
From it we get Godly Character
But we can’t get the godly character without walking with God. It must be done with him, not in our self trying to produce some sort of Inward View of what we think Godly characters.
Devotion to God signifies a life given, or devoted to God. He is thus then a godly man, who does not live to his own will, but the will of christ.
Paints the picture of this. We have died to self to be alive in christ. We are a new creation, behold all things have passed away all things become new.
Our devotion is no longer to self but to Christ, In this a different character and person, and life style is created.
“What ever you do, do unto the glory of the Lord”
3 points that seemingly build an attitude of devotion toward God.
This Life style cannot be completed apart from God as the central core of it, perhaps for a bit outwardly, but it will not be sustained.
being devoted to something you really don’t care about will only end in disaster.
All 3 are focusing on God.
Fear of God.
There are two types of fear
a. There are two types of fear
A.
anxious dread
reverent and awe
i.Anxious Dread:
Anxious dread
Adam hiding in the garden. Anxious dread
Reverence
We have been freed from God’s wrath
work out salvation with fear and trembling
Reverence and awe is our primary “fear we are to have”
Isaiah chapter 6.
2 wings covering the angles face face and revelation.
AN AWE AND REVERENCE OF GOD!
This reverence and awe is what drives us to have our devotion to God.
It should result in obedience to God
If we truly revere Him we will obey him. Since every act of disobedience displeases him.
2. Love of God
a. The fear of God Leads us to a love of God.
1 John 4:19 ESV
We love because he first loved us.
Once we realized though we have escaped the wrath of God,
That Jesus took our ransom upon the cross and paid that price
it really shows Gods love for us.
and in turn we love because he first loved us.
we will talk more about love next time
Desire for God
3. Desire for God
and with the fear of God and the Love of God it is clear to see how our heart begins to truly grow a desire for God.
True Godliness builds our affections and grows our desires to walk in God’s presence.
it teaches us to love him more and more, trust him more, enjoy him more.
The Hymn. As a deer pants for the water my soul longs for thee, you alone are the real joy giver and the apple of my eye.
you alone are my joy my shield
you alone doth my spirit yield.
In the END
In the End God has always wanted fellow ship with us From the Time of Adam and eve walking in the cool of the garden until now.
God desires us to desire Him.
Thats why we have Chose. He wants us to choose him. He wants our fellowship
He gave us a way out of sin to him.
It is up for us to; walk in Faith, learning more about him, exercise self control and walk with moral excellence, and not moral excellence by mans standards but Gods. Its up to us to fight the good fight as Paul did, and walk in godliness as we do so, fellowshipping with our God.
