1 And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, “Get up! Go to the great city Nineveh and cry out against her, because their evil has come up before me.” (This the Assignment) But Jonah set out to flee toward Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. And he went down to Joppa and found a merchant ship going to Tarshish, and paid her fare, and went on board her to go with them toward Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
The Word of the LORD came to Jonah
Jonah: (Dove)onah was from Gath Hepher (meaning “winepress of the pit”), a town in lower Galilee near Nazareth (). The town has been identified with the modern village of el-Meshhed, where the tomb of Jonah is still shown. Gath Hepher was within the tribal territory given to Zebulun (see , ), so it is likely Jonah belonged to that tribe. Jonah ministered during the reign of Jeroboam II of Israel (793–753 bc; ).

Gath Hepher was within the tribal territory given to Zebulun (see , ), so it is likely Jonah belonged to that tribe. Jonah ministered during the reign of Jeroboam II of Israel (793–753 bc; ).

Thought: That assignment can be found in 3:4, "7 tn Heb “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown!” The adverbial use of עוֹד (’od, “yet”) denotes limited temporal continuation ( s.v. עוֹד 1.a; ; ). rendered it as “at the end of [forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown].”

Jonah was give an assignment he did not want!
Thought: John was infuriated with his assignment, his anger drove him in the direction of Tartessus, Tarshish Probably Tartessus in southern Spain, perhaps the most distant city known to Israel. Tartessus was a Phoenician colony. At this time, Phoenicia was a close ally of Israel, an alliance solidified with the marriage between King Ahab of Israel and Jezebel, a Phoenician princess.
