Introduction

The older I get the more I love my parents.

Not just because they are better people as they get older as if they are trying to get into heaven.

I love them more because I understand them better now then I did years ago.

I live a little longer, I get a little slower, I go to bed a little earlier, and the older I get the more I understand what they thought of and think of me.

I call and apologize because I just didn't understand.

b) Where there is a lack of understanding there is a lack of appreciation.

My parents love for me has not changed, so it is not how much they love me that has developed this new revelation, but it is my understanding of their love.

I appreciate my parents more not because they do more but because I understand better.

I meet people and I use to ask why people struggled with

c) I have my own kids now and it causes me to look back on my own life and understand what in a new way what they sacrificed and gave towards me.

When I did not understand I did not appreciate nor did I obey.

My understanding is critical to my appreciation

The greater my understanding of their Love for me, the greater my love grows for them.

A misunderstanding of God’s sacrifice will result in a misunderstanding of God’s Love.

A misunderstanding of God’s Love will lead to a misplacement of our Love.

The Pattern

We often misplace our Love because we dont understand his Love

2 Ways we Understand God’s Love

We must understand what we deserve

Hosea chapter 1 & 2

If you do not know how much of a sinner you are, you will not know how much of a savior you need

Have you ever wondered why you have a hard time obeying God?

Have you ever said to yourself.

I know I Love God yet I struggle deepply to do what he has called me to do?

The reality is that we often follow what we love even over what we believe.

This is why the greatest commandment is

It is your love for God that fuels your obedience, desire, and pursuit of God.

Yet if you dont understand God’s Love.

Context

Hosea is an Old Testament Prophet who prophesied during the later half of eith century B.C. right before the Northern Kingdom went into exile.

He is called to do a difficult thing to communicate to God’s chosen people about thier unfaithfulness to God despite his his response of faithfulness.

He tells them that they are going to be struck down and sent into exile but will be redeemd later as prohesied by Moses.

The Challenge with what God calls Hosea to do is that he actually calls Hosea not to tell the people what God’s Love looks like, he actually calls him to show the people what it looks like.

In Chapter 1 God tells Hosea to Marry a promiscous woman, have children with her.

She had her first son by Hosea, had two more children by other men.

God calls his children

Now after all that God decides to show you Love to the people again and here we will find what it means for God to Love us.

Hosea Redeems His Wife

3 And the LORD said to me, “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” 2 So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer and a lethech of barley.

3 And I said to her, “You must dwell as mine for many days.

You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.” 4 For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods.

5 Afterward the children of Israel shall return and seek the LORD their God, and David their king, and they shall come in fear to the LORD and to his goodness in the latter days.

God says to have a continous posture of love for her over time.

God is faithful to us

His love has nothing to do with our love towards him

Faithfulness is maintaining consistent commitment despite inconsistent circumstances.

Do something in faith even though the circumstances are inconsistent

If you work at your job and you are not sure if you will get paid but you keep coming even when you dot’ get paid.

Gomer forfeits her yet God remains faithful

B) Idolatry

a) Idolatry was a huge issue for the children of Israel over the course of the old testament

b) Idols are anything that we are committed to worship more then God are undeserving of worship

God is less concerned with the objects of your affection, while being more concerned with the placement of your affection

It is not that God does not want you to not love anything else it is that you are not to love and anything over him.

Gomer found a lover that she attributed greater worth to then her husband.

Worship is not at Church, it is all of life.

Rasin cakes are known as wine cakes were a part of another diety that was related to fertility and what we would consider desires of the flesh.

These raise cakes were sweet to the taste.

See idolatry is about you and how it makes you feel.

See the problem that we have is not just with our desire but with our taste.

Sin taste good

It’s not temptation unless you enjoy it.

If you don’t enjoy your sin you are not doing it right.

We are consumed with taste while neglecting its impact on us.

Job

Zophar is speaking to Job of the dangers of evil

He says that it taste good going in but turns to poison

I never get full on healthy food because I dont eat for nurishment I eat for taste

We have to be careful of the sin in our lives because of the taste.

We don’t know what it will do to us

We can choose our sins but we can not choose our consequences.

I wish food would not just show us the ingredients but the affects

The problem with taste is that it is temporary

You don’t eat desert because you are hungry.

that is why you keep taking bites

We were given taste buds to protect us
