1:1-25
Covenant—King
Illus—HGTV remodel homes, nothing else is good on TV. Outside—inside. W/O strong structure the stuff on the inside would be threatened. HADDOCK HOUSE
Context—Moses on Mount Sinai in response to Egypt and Canaan.

1. God speaks and creation exists.

begins with 7 words in the Hebrew Bible. Seven is a number of completion. Verse 1 appears as an introduction to the Book of Genesis, indeed an introduction to the whole Bible. In the New Testament explains that it is through and for Jesus that the world is created. (Also see ; ; ; and )
Nehemiah 9:6 CSB
You, Lord, are the only God. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their stars, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them, and all the stars of heaven worship you.
Amos 4:13 CSB
He is here: the one who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, the one who makes the dawn out of darkness and strides on the heights of the earth. The Lord, the God of Armies, is his name.
Psalm 90:2 CSB
Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, you are God.
Jeremiah 10:12–16 CSB
He made the earth by his power, established the world by his wisdom, and spread out the heavens by his understanding. When he thunders, the waters in the heavens are in turmoil, and he causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings the wind from his storehouses. Everyone is stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his carved image, for his cast images are a lie; there is no breath in them. They are worthless, a work to be mocked. At the time of their punishment they will be destroyed. Jacob’s Portion is not like these because he is the one who formed all things. Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the Lord of Armies is his name.
Colossians 1:15–20 CSB
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together. He is also the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile everything to himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Romans 11:36 CSB
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen.
Verse 2 then explains the condition in which God begins a series a sayings to create the world. Creation is not God. On its own without God the earth is formless and void and dark. It is chaotic. And yet the Spirit of God is described as hovering over the face of the deep. God will overcome the chaos as we will see in verse three by His Word. *(The key to understanding the chaotic nature of water is how it corresponds to the de-creation of the world at the flood in . Also the chaos that describes the judgement of Israel when they are exiled out of the land for disobedience [:!3]. The plagues can also be seen as a de-creating type of event in the book of Exodus) **(Also note , with the Spirit of God at Mt Sinai)

Verse 3 How does God overcome the chaos? By speaking His Word. There are several other passages throughout Scripture that speak to the creation of the world by the Word of God (see ; , , and ) Then God said let there be light. indicates that God is light, therefore how does God overcome the chaos? Himself. The world is not God it is separate from Him and chaotic without Him and yet He overcomes it by speaking Himself into creation. Literally “Let there be Me.”
Hebrews 11:3 CSB
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made from things that are not visible.
1 John 1:5 CSB
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him.
John 1:1–3 CSB
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created.
2 Peter 3:5 CSB
They deliberately overlook this: By the word of God the heavens came into being long ago and the earth was brought about from water and through water.
Psalm 33:6 CSB
The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth.
Verses 4-25 Again you have the pattern as presented above, God speaks and creation obeys. God creates everything ‘according to their kind’ meaning there is no evolution from one thing into a different thing.

2. God is King over His creation.

3. Creation submits to the authority of God.
