Introduction
1. Baseball - Cubs - 108 years of curse; Steve Bartman; Blame
2. Bartman became the poster child for the defeat the Cubs were dealing with
3. We are afraid of defeat because we don’t want to face what it means. God has a purpose for using defeat in our lives.
4. This morning we are going to see how God used defeat in Israel to teach Israel how to really be victorious and not be afraid.
Read Joshua 7:1-15
Background
1. Joshua leading set apart people (marked in Ch 5)
2. Just defeated the city of Jericho (Ch 6)
3. God’s direction as they entered the city
a. v18, 19 - God says what to do in the city and with what you find
b. Set apart - for God & for destruction
4. War - spoils and plunder not available; destroy or dedicate to God
a. First fruits - belong to God
b. Similar to the tithe
everything belongs to God
c. Commands - defeat comes from not following the commands
d. Stolen from God - “do not rob God” (Malachi)
e. Jesus talked about $$ so why shouldn’t we
f. God is always faithful - “test me”
We struggle to give and Israel struggled with God’s commands because of the first thing that God is trying to teach us. God uses defeat because ...

1. Defeat reveals our hearts

A. SIN

- Destroying everything in Jericho sounds harsh to us
- Rahab is an example of God’s love and forgiveness
The people of Jericho had heard and only Rahab responded
- SIN has one outcome (Romans 6:23) = destruction
- GOSPEL
- SIN to not obey what God has said (not the first time)
Deuteronomy 20:16–18 NLT
In those towns that the Lord your God is giving you as a special possession, destroy every living thing. You must completely destroy the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, just as the Lord your God has commanded you. This will prevent the people of the land from teaching you to imitate their detestable customs in the worship of their gods, which would cause you to sin deeply against the Lord your God.

- DEFEAT was necessary to see their sin
- Covenant with God was broken by their sin
- FEROCIOUS about the removal of sin
- FLEE (ex. David & Bathsheba)
- Romans - put sin to death
- Don’t play with it, look at, and try to get as close as you can
- Achan’s fault - BODY - Calvary Baptist Church - Growth & increase of SIN (Pride/Gossip)
- Our SIN hurts the name of Jesus
- We don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, but we are okay offending a HOLY GOD!

B. Self-Confidence

- Last battle went good (Jericho); successful and now on the calendar
- Joshua sent the spies & they see Ai as small (PRIDE)
- Should have been “God that was awesome! What do you want us to do now?”
- Learn from following God or learn from defeat as we disobey God
- The result of self-confidence was defeat & fear
Defeat will reveal our hearts, God has provided the answer to overcome defeat so we don’t have to be afraid.

2. The answer for defeat is obedience

- Fail or Succeed - this is our measurement
- Obedience is what brings success
- Acts 2:42 - God added to their number daily
- You want success - FOLLOW & OBEY WHAT GOD SAYS
- Obedience to God is connected to His WORD
- ALTERNATIVE: you go from defeat to defeat
- Joshua 1:8 (Study, Mediate, Obey)
- Disciple maker
- Christian “little Christ” - mini-me’s
- Romans 8 - “conformed to the image of Christ”
- Meditation (Ex: Psalm 37:4)
- They listened to God and He gives the victory over Ai
God means what he says and obedience the requirement of a disciple
Conclusion
God will take a defeat and use it to show us what is in our hearts, but often we want to blame others.
Steve Bartman became the blame for Cubs fans, but the truth is, it wasn’t his fault. No more than it was Ai’s fault or God’s fault for the defeat. It was Israel’s. I think the Cubs organization realized it wasn’t Steve’s fault for their loss. In 2016, the Cubs won the World Series and ended the 108 years of defeat. The Cubs are giving Steve a World Series ring. Acknowledging that it was not his fault. Defeat has turned to joy.
When we obey God, success will be the result and there will be no fear of defeat.
