Introduction:

In the first part of this series, we answered the question “who is the Holy Spirit?”
The manifestation of “one God” in “three distinct persons”
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
in an easy to remember way “ He is the Third person of the trinity”
God the father and the son and the Holy Spirit. Which invariably makes the Holy Spirit “the Third person of the Godhead- He is God: co-equal and co-eternal with God.”
Now, Trinity is a fancy way of saying there is only one God, but that has revealed himself throughout the scripture in three distinct persons. as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said:
Another very Important point that should be stressed is that “the Holy Spirit is a person and not just a baptismal experience.”
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
2. When Jesus introduced the Holy Spirit to his disciples in the book of , he said to them, I am sending you a “paracletos” the word which represent 7 distinct ROLES of the Holy Spirit in our lives as the disciples of Christ
John 14:26 AMP
26 But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.
Seven major roles that we seriously need in our lives… You can hear all that story in part one of this series…

Finally in Part one:

The Personality of the Holy Spirit in a way that we can make sense of it, is well captured in the meaning of his name “paracletos”
The Personality of the Holy Spirit in a way that we can make sense of it, is well captured in the meaning of his name “paracletos”
John 15:26 AMP
26 But when the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, Whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes (proceeds) from the Father, He [Himself] will testify regarding Me.
john
We discovered that The Holy Spirit is the kind of Helper that makes the impossibility possible.

Today: we are taking a step deeper...

The Ministries of the Holy Spirit Part 2

Text: john 16:13-14
Ephesians 2:18 The Living Bible
18 Now all of us, whether Jews or Gentiles, may come to God the Father with the Holy Spirit’s help because of what Christ has done for us.
John 16:13–14 NASB95
13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.
John 14:26 ESV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
In this part, I will shed more light on some points that I introduced in part one; secondly, I will gradually introduce us to the ministry of the Holy Spirit; and finally, .....
John 14:26 ESV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
In this part I will gradually introduce us to the ministry of the Holy Spirit - there are some points that was raised in part one, that was not fully addressed, in this part I will bring them into Focus…
In part one, I briefly introduced the concept of symbolism: That is, the use of certain symbols in the bible to describe the Holy Spirit. For instance, he was describe :
1. as Dove in
Matthew 3:16 ESV
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
2. As Oil,
Luke 4:18 ESV
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
3. as Fire
Matthew 3:11 ESV
11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Mat
Acts 2:3 NASB95
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
Act 2:
4. As Wind
John 3:8 ESV
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Acts 2:3 ESV
3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
Acts 3:2 ESV
2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple.
act 3:
Acts 2:2 ESV
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
5. as a Seal
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB95
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
John 6:37 ESV
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
Ephe 1
6. as Rivers of the living water
John 7:38 ESV
38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
The next question is this: HOW does these symbols connect us with the MINISTRIES of the Holy Spirit ?
The bible chose dove because among other things, the dove is gentle and peaceful.
Ephesians 5:8 ESV
8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Matthew 10:16 AMP
16 Behold, I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves; be wary and wise as serpents, and be innocent (harmless, guileless, and without falsity) as doves.
Matthew 10:19 ESV
19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.
mat 10 6
The Ministry of the Holy Spirit is gentle, harmless, peaceful, without falsity and he is not forceful.
Mat 10
Let me say this: If you want to walk with him, you have to be a lamb - remember, John introduced Jesus as the lamb of God “john 1:29: behold the lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the whole world”- Lamb also speaks of gentleness and is easy to lead.(so, both the dove and the lamb have similar nature- the bible says, can two work together except they be agree? )
Much more than that, the lamb is a figure of sacrifice, a life laid down:
Revelation 5:12 ESV
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”
Revelation 5:9 ESV
9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
Rev 5
2. The Oil is used in the scripture to indicate approval, and dedication. it was used extensively in the scripture to set aside The Priest and the King:
Leviticus 8:12 NASB95
12 Then he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.
1 Samuel 10:1 ESV
1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.
1
What is the meaning of this?
The bible says something about who you are as a disciple of Christ:
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Revelation 1:6 KJV 1900
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
Rev 1
The Holy Spirit as oil, Consecrate us to the Lord, He empowers us with the authority of our office as priests and kings… without the oil of the Holy Spirit, we will only tell the stories of redemption, we will never be able to fully demonstrate our sonship in God and dominion over the enemy: When the oil came upon Jesus, he was able to demonstrate divine authority over the enemy
Acts 10:38 ESV
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
3. The Holy Spirit as Fire:
Fire is a symbol of PURIFICATION in the scripture. In the OT, the sin offering is wholly unto the Lord, and the offering must be offered, through fire.... if our lives are to be fully purified and set aside for the master’s use, then the Holy Spirit has to purify us as fire…
Zechariah 13:9 ESV
9 And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”
Malachi 3:2 ESV
2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap.
So the Holy Spirit is a refiner, he is a purifier: he helps to set our lives straight with GOD… he removes the stubbles out of our lives and leave behind only those things that have been built to last.
Hebrews 12:27 ESV
27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.
1 Corinthians 3:13 ESV
13 each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.
4. as a wind: Wind is invisible but impactful
John 3:8 ESV
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
The Holy spirit will make you invisible to the world but vivid to the Lord; invisible to the world but making great impacts in the world… his ministry will help you to decrease, so as to let God increase in you.
in , John the baptist said:
John 3:30 KJV 1900
30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
Romans 13:14 ESV
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Rom 13
The Holy Spirit will help you to overcome the flesh and its lustful desires, to be able to serve God as a useable vessel of honour.
5. As a SEAL:
A SEAL Represents ownership and its also a mark of authenticity:
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13–14 The Living Bible
13 And because of what Christ did, all you others too, who heard the Good News about how to be saved, and trusted Christ, were marked as belonging to Christ by the Holy Spirit, who long ago had been promised to all of us Christians. 14 His presence within us is God’s guarantee that he really will give us all that he promised; and the Spirit’s seal upon us means that God has already purchased us and that he guarantees to bring us to himself. This is just one more reason for us to praise our glorious God.
Ephesi 1:13
The Holy Spirit in us, is the only sure guarantee that we belong to God and that his promises actually truly belongs to us by covenant.
we are marked as belonging to Christ by the Holy Spirit
the spirit’s seal upon us, means that God has already purchased us… verse 14
Romans 8:16 ESV
16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
6. As rivers of the Living water:
John 7:37–39 ESV
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 7:37–38 ESV
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
Rivers of the living water: take note, the bible says “rivers, not just one river.” The Holy Spirit will open diverse channels of ministries for us as the disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ… he will equip us adequately for several ways of reaching out to others for Jesus Christ.
In act 1:8 Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit as one who empowers us as believers for effective evangelization of the world..
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Through the Ministry of the Holy Spirit, we become empowered to witnesses for Jesus Christ, not just in one area but in diverse ministries. Paul Spoke extensively about diversity of ministries :
Ephe
Ephesians 4:10–12 The Living Bible
10 The same one who came down is the one who went back up, that he might fill all things everywhere with himself, from the very lowest to the very highest. 11 Some of us have been given special ability as apostles; to others he has given the gift of being able to preach well; some have special ability in winning people to Christ, helping them to trust him as their Savior; still others have a gift for caring for God’s people as a shepherd does his sheep, leading and teaching them in the ways of God. 12 Why is it that he gives us these special abilities to do certain things best? It is that God’s people will be equipped to do better work for him, building up the Church, the body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity;
Rivers also symbolizes abundance.
Rivers also symbolizes abundance
Ephesians 2:18 ESV
18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
6. The Holy Spirit as wine:
Before I go further, let me recap on what we have learnt so far: The symbols of the Holy Spirit were not randomly chosing, they were carefully chosen to tell us something about the works of the Holy Spirit:
Dove is chosen, to indicate is gentle, peaceful and truthful ministry. and remember i said, you have to be a lamb to work with him.
Oil is chosen, to signal to us that his work will include to set us apart for God, he will work on us as a consecrator; he will approve us and the authority of our calling to be priests and kings.
He was presented as fire, to represent his purification ministry, he will set on us as a refiner fire, separating the lie from the truth, so as to present us to God as a holy sacrifice pure and acceptable unto God.
He is the wind of change, to make you invincible - he will reduce the self tendencies in you and exult Godliness in you. He will ensure that though you are not filled with pride, your work will make a lasting impact in your generation…
He is a seal, because his ministry in us is a guarantor that we trully belong to God and that the promises of God are ours by covenant.
He is a channeler, he will create multiple channels of ministries for us, to become effective and efficient ministers of the gospel of Christ...

how can we summarize the ministry of the Holy Spirit from what I have mentioned so far?

the person of the holy spirit
the symbols of the holy spirit

Is the Holy Spirit a real Person?

The best way to answer this would be through the words of Jesus:
John 14:16–17 ESV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
John 15:26 ESV
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
john
pay attention to the pronouns used by Jesus to describe the Holy Spirit:
sees HIM
knows HIM
you know HIM
He dwell with you
John 16:6–7 ESV
6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
John 16:
I will send HIM to you
John 16:13–14 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
John 16:13 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
In seven places the pronoun HE was used to describe the Holy Spirit.
He will guide you
For HE will not speak of his own authority
Whatsoever he hears, he will speak
and he will declare to you
he will glorify me
for he will take

Jesus Clearly refers to The Holy Spirit as a person, with human qualities.

Back to john 16:13-14
John 16:13–14 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
He will GUIDE - he must have eyes
Whatever he HEARS - he has ears
He will SPEAK - he has mouth
He will TAKE - he must have hands
