Introduction

What is death?

Cessation of life (physical death) or separation from God (spiritual death).
2 Corinthians 5:1–2 NKJV
1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,
Paul describes it as losing a tent. a dwelling place.
2 Peter 1:13–14 NKJV
13 Yes, I think it is right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you, 14 knowing that shortly I must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.
Peter does the same.
Hebrews 2:14 NKJV
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Death is also described as the power of the devil.
Revelation 2:11 NKJV
11 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.” ’
There are two deaths. This explains the separation from God.
Revelation 21:8 NKJV
8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Some of those who will experience the second death.

Who will die?

Romans 3:23 NKJV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

When was death established?

Genesis 2:15 NKJV
Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
Gen 2:15
Genesis 2:15–17 NKJV
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Gen 2:15-
Transgression against God equated to death.
to die v. — to pass from physical life and lose all bodily attributes and functions necessary to sustain life.
Genesis 2:7 NKJV
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 1:27 NKJV
27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Gen 2:
God created us to be living creatures in his image. When we stop being that we cease to truly live. Thus we give up our original intent to be in communion with God for eternity.

Why do we die?

Genesis 2:15–17 NKJV
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
We have separated ourselves from he who gives life. It is a consequence of sin.
Isaiah 59:1–2 NKJV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.
It is not impossible for God to be around sinners. But God is a just God and must punish those who sin. In his Grace and mercy he separates himself so as not to destroy.
1 Thessalonians 4:14 NKJV
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
There is hope!
Genesis 3:22–24 NKJV
22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”—23 therefore the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
God did not want us to stay in a sinful state for eternity separated from him.

Who will die?

Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
All who sin will one day die. Death is a consequence of sin.
1 Corinthians 15:50–53 NKJV
50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
Not all will go naturally. Some will be alive upon the return. The day of judgment.

Where do we go after death?

Ecclesiastes 12:7 NKJV
7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Man is made up of three parts. Body, Soul, & Spirit. We are a trichotomy. We are responsible for our souls.
John 11:14 NKJV
14 Then Jesus said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
John 11:43 NKJV
43 Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!”
Lazarus was DEAD
1 Samuel 25:1 NKJV
1 Then Samuel died; and the Israelites gathered together and lamented for him, and buried him at his home in Ramah. And David arose and went down to the Wilderness of Paran.
1 Samuel 28:7–15 NKJV
7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.” 8 So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him; and they came to the woman by night. And he said, “Please conduct a séance for me, and bring up for me the one I shall name to you.” 9 Then the woman said to him, “Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?” 10 And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, “As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” 11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!” 13 And the king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What did you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth.” 14 So he said to her, “What is his form?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle.” And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down. 15 Now Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” And Saul answered, “I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do.”
Samuel was DEAD
WE DO NOT JUST DISAPPEAR OR CEASE TO EXIST WHEN WE DIE!
John 3:13 NKJV
13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
jn
Since Christ, no man has gone to heaven
Genesis 5:22–24 NKJV
22 After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three hundred years, and had sons and daughters. 23 So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
2 Kings 2:1 NKJV
1 And it came to pass, when the Lord was about to take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.
There are two instances but they did not die. This is what we KNOW
What we do know...
Hebrews 9:27 NKJV
27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
It would not make sense or be fair to allow everyone to come to heaven or go to hell, be judged, and end up in a different place.
2 Corinthians 5:10 NKJV
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
Revelation 20:12–13 NKJV
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
We will be judged for all we have done.
Salvation for faithful Christians
Hebrews 9:28 NKJV
28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.
There will be salvation for Christians
Damnation for unbelievers and unfaithful Christians
Matthew 8:12 NKJV
12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Matthew 13:42 NKJV
42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 22:13 NKJV
13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
We will be something totally different
1 John 3:2–3 NKJV
2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
In Heaven, a new existence
1 jn 3
Revelation 21:4 NKJV
4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
Revelation 21:27 NKJV
27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
