 Jacob lived in the land of his father’s sojournings, in the land of Canaan.
2 These are the generations of Jacob.
Joseph’s story is one of Suffering.
Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers.
He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives.
And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age.
And he made him a robe of many colors.
4 But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.

Joseph’s story is one of Separation.
He was separated Genetically — He was the only child of Rachel, Jacobs only true love.
His family was dysfunctional // share Jacob’s favoritism - blessing of his sons.
This required Joseph to live under a higher scrutiny.
He lived under greater expectations.
Application: Someone has to function on a higher level.
God needs someone who can live above their circumstances.
Someone who can live according to His power and abilities not their own.
He was separated Graphically — His father dressed him in a coat that set him apart as the family leader, even above his brother’s own clans.
He looked like someone with a greater purpose.

He was separated Generationally — He grew up in a different culture than his older brothers.
He was the same age as his brothers children and yet he was tasked to lead them.

Application: Someone has to embrace the unfamiliar.
He was separated Geographically — He spent his time in a different place than his brothers who hung out in forbidden places.
