‘And you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years; and the time of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years.

A family that was not able to pay its debts may have had to sell its property or have the property seized in lieu of payment (vv.
25–28).
The practice of Jubilee essentially reversed this transfer of ownership and restored the property to the family.

The land of Canaan is actually a grant from God; the Israelites are His tenants, not landowners.
