1 Peter,
an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion
in Pontus,
Galatia,
Cappadocia,
Asia,
and Bithynia,
2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,
in the sanctification of the Spirit,
for obedience to Jesus Christ
and for sprinkling with his blood:
May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
The Author:
Peter is the writer of this brief epistle. He identifies himself as, “an apostle of Jesus Christ.” An apostle is one who was sent. However, being sent really had multiple implications:
An apostle was sent by a particular person, in this case, Jesus
An apostle was sent with a particular message. The message Peter & the other Apostles were sent with was the message of repentance and forgiveness in Jesus’ Name
An apostle was not allowed to deviate from the message. In the ancient world heralds were instructed with an exact message. Any deviation could have resulted in imprisonment or death!
