(NIV) — 9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

(NIV) — 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

(NIV) — 16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all share the one loaf.

The source of community is our life connection to Christ. Community is the result of union with Christ.

Christ First

If Jesus is taken out of the equation as the source, community is simply at a human level. This is important to remember because community is not our source. Jesus is.

(NIV) — 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

Support & Responsibility

(NIV) — 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load.

Vs 2 — burdens represent things that are too heavy for us

My need for Wendy & Joan, Andrew, the Elders and congregation during burnout recovery.

Vs 5 — load represents our own responsibilities. (Gk commonly used for cargo or luggage.) It’s what you should be able to carry. (I can’t worship for you. No one can take the place of your own prayer life. etc.)

Even Jesus had times of both. (wilderness, garden)

It’s a challenge to know where the line is between the two, and it may be at different places for different people depending on a variety of factors.

As we function together in community, we help each other learn to be more dependent on Jesus while becoming more like Him. He is the source both to us and through us.

There are some things you can’t do alone. There are some things you must do alone. (or at least should)

(NIV) — 16 At my first defence, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them. 17 But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.

Dale & having to learn to not be so dependent on him

There are moments in your life when Jesus will be your only help — but He will be there and His grace is sufficient!

Give examples pertaining to spiritual growth, character development and overcoming sin.

We are made to need each other so that the Spirit can work through us to help each other. On the other hand, we can never make another person our source. As much as Jesus is in you, you are not Jesus.

Experiences: Dale & having to learn not to be dependent. Wendy and avoiding dependency trap there too.

Salvation is found in Christ alone. The power to live for him comes from the Holy Spirit. The spiritual food that equips us is the Bible, the word of God.

We must keep Jesus as the centre of life, both personally and communally. Church is first about Jesus, then about His people. Life is first about Jesus, then about other relationships.
